Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon offers two main paths: Route B combines the glass bridge crossing with the valley walk, while Route A goes straight down into the gorge. Both routes end with a short boat ride on Shenquan Lake at the lower valley exit. Plan your ticket choice, descent elevators, and return pickup from Wulingyuan before you head out.

Should you add it to your trip?

Add the Grand Canyon when you want a fun half-day trip featuring a high glass suspension bridge, forest streams, and steep cliff walls. The bridge offers an open crossing high above the gorge, while the valley floor below features a relaxed walk along shaded boardwalks.

If classic sandstone pillar peaks are your main focus, spend your full sightseeing days at Zhangjiajie National Forest Park first. The Grand Canyon is a separate scenic area in Cili County. Tianmen Mountain is another distinct park, known for cliffside walkways rather than a suspension bridge over a gorge. For that mountain day, see our guide on Tianmen ticket choices and routes.

What the glass bridge feels like

The Grand Canyon Glass Bridge (张家界大峡谷玻璃桥) hangs across the gorge between two mountain ridges. Clear glass panels in the floor look straight down into the valley, with views of green hills and steep cliffs on both sides. Solid, non-glass walkways line the edges of the deck, giving you a firm footing if you want to avoid looking through the glass.

Route B includes both the bridge crossing and the canyon hike. The bridge comes right at the start of your visit. After crossing, the path leads to the east-side experience center (桥东体验中心), a glass cliff walkway, and your choice of descent routes down to the valley floor.

Find the glass bridge on the map.

What you see down in the canyon

The canyon floor features clear streams, small waterfalls, shaded boardwalks, and high rock faces. At Rainbow Square (彩虹广场), the descent from Route B joins the main valley path. From there, follow the trail past Momo Cave (摸摸洞) toward Shenquan Lake (神泉湖).

A scenic boat ride across Shenquan Lake is included near the end of your walk to reach the canyon exit. Rainbow Lake (彩虹湖) is an optional, separately paid boat activity near Rainbow Square.

Choose A for the canyon, B for the bridge and canyon

Choice What is included Price reference
Route A Canyon hiking trail and Shenquan Lake boat 50元 (≈ USD 7.5 ) per person
Route B Glass bridge, canyon hiking trail, and Shenquan Lake boat 178元 (≈ USD 27 ) per person
Experience bundle Optional descent lifts, slides, cinema, and boat 120元 (≈ USD 18 ) per person

A and B are the routes in the current booking system. Choose by the current ticket name and its included route. You must buy a separate Grand Canyon ticket even if you already hold a pass for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park or Tianmen Mountain.

If you are also visiting the forest park, compare its admission and lift tickets before booking.

Decide which activities you want

Standard Route B admission includes the bridge, the canyon walk, and the final boat ride. The extra ziplines, slides, lifts, and MR cinema are optional add-ons that you do not need just to complete your visit.

The official experience bundle lists eight projects: the MR flying cinema (飞越大峡谷MR飞行影院), high zipline (高空滑索), viewing lift (观光电梯), treasure lift (寻宝电梯), sculpture lift (雕塑电梯), Wuwangpo slide (吴王坡滑道), Yixiantian slide (一线天滑道), and Rainbow Lake boat (彩虹湖游船).

Pick the bundle when you want several activities or prefer the elevator descent. One person uses the bundle, so group members cannot share rides. Individual activities can also be bought through on-site QR purchase points.

The zipline-and-slide descent and the elevator descent follow different branches. Elevators cut down the descent, though the valley path still requires walking. The elevator branch suits visitors who want to protect their knees without riding a zipline.

Via ferrata, rock climbing, and bungee jumping have separate bookings outside this bundle.

Follow Route B from the bridge to the boat exit

Plan 3 to 4 hours inside for Route B. The one-way route covers about 3.5 km from the upper entrance down to the lower exit.

  1. Enter at the upper visitor center (张家界大峡谷游客中心) and cross the glass bridge.
  2. Walk past the east-side experience center to the cliff walkway.
  3. Head down to Rainbow Square using scenic elevators: the viewing elevator (观光电梯), treasure elevator (寻宝电梯), and either the sculpture elevator (雕塑电梯) or Wuwangpo slide (吴王坡滑道). The other branch uses the high zipline (高空滑索) and Yixiantian slide (一线天滑道).
  4. Walk along the canyon stream path past Momo Cave to Shenquan Lake.
  5. Board the included Shenquan Lake boat to reach the lower canyon exit (峡谷出口).

Choose Route A for the valley alone

Plan 2 to 3 hours for Route A, which covers about 3 km. From the upper visitor center, descend outdoor stairs through Yixiantian (一线天) directly to Rainbow Square. Continue along the stream trail past Momo Cave, take the boat across Shenquan Lake, and leave through the lower exit.

Route A skips the glass bridge and starts with a steep stair descent into the gorge. If you want to avoid stairs, Route B with its optional elevators is much easier on your knees.

Book your entry date with your passport

Book your entry date and time slot up to five days in advance, allowing for the travel time from Wulingyuan.

You can book through the official ticket channel. For an English booking page, Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge tickets offer a convenient option for Route B.

Register each visitor with their own US passport details. On Chinese booking pages, select 护照 (Passport) under 证件类型 (document type). Enter your passport number in 证件号码 and your full name as shown on your passport photo page in 姓名.

After booking, save your order details, entry time slot, and scenic area order number (景区订单号). Bring your physical US passport to the park gates to scan at the turnstile. If your platform order requires collecting a paper ticket, show your physical passport and order number at the consultation desk (咨询台).

Concession and insurance options

Children under 14 accompanied by an adult receive free admission to the canyon, bridge, and scenic lifts. Visitors aged 14 to 17 and seniors aged 60 to 64 receive half-price admission. For seniors aged 65 and above, canyon admission is free while bridge and lift tickets are half price. Full-time undergraduate and school students receive student rates with valid student ID.

Bring physical proof of age or your student card to the visitor center ticket window (游客中心售票窗口) to purchase concession tickets.

Accident insurance costs 3元 (≈ USD 0.45 ) per person. The official platform offers tickets with insurance (marked 含保险) and without insurance (marked 不含保险).

Changes and refunds

For official direct bookings, cancellations made before the park opens on your visit date are free. Cancellations made after opening time incur a 10% fee.

If you booked through an agency or online platform, submit your date change or refund request directly in that app.

If you need to correct a passport number or name, contact the platform support team with your order number. At the ticket window, you can use these simple phrases:

  • 我用护照预订了门票。 (I booked tickets with my passport.)
  • 订单上的护照号码填错了。 (The passport number on the order is incorrect.)

Start at Wulingyuan Bus Station

Local buses depart from Wulingyuan Bus Station (武陵源汽车站), located in central Wulingyuan at the corner of Weiyang Road and Guihua Road. Map apps often list it as 武陵源汽车客运站. This town station is separate from the forest park East Gate. Find the bus station on the map.

Go to the ticket window and ask for 张家界大峡谷 (Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon). You can also ask staff about the last return bus: 今天回武陵源的末班车几点? (What time is the last bus back to Wulingyuan today?).

Bus fare, payment, and travel time

The bus fare is 15元 (≈ USD 2.2 ) per person each way (30元 (≈ USD 4.5 ) round trip). The drive takes around 40 minutes.

Pay for the bus separately from your park admission. If paying cash, carry small bank notes. To pay with Alipay or WeChat Pay, ask the conductor:

  • 可以用现金吗? (Can I pay with cash?)
  • 可以用支付宝或微信吗? (Can I use Alipay or WeChat Pay?)

Starting in the morning gives you plenty of time for the park walk and return trip. If you are leaving after lunch and want to reach your entrance time quickly, a taxi from your hotel avoids the station walk and bus wait.

From the bus stop to your ticket entrance

The scenic area has two transport hubs: the lower parking lot (双坪游客集散中心 / 山下停车场) and the upper visitor center (张家界大峡谷游客中心).

If your bus stops at the lower parking lot, take the free scenic shuttle bus 5 km uphill to the upper visitor center. If your bus drops you off directly at the top, head straight to the ticket gates and scan your passport.

Complete your visit at the lower canyon exit

Both Route A and Route B end at the bottom of the gorge. After crossing Shenquan Lake by boat, follow the signs to the canyon exit (峡谷出口) at the Shuangping transport center (双坪游客集散中心). Locate the Grand Canyon on the map.

Return to your Wulingyuan hotel

At the lower exit, follow the signs to the return buses and shuttles heading back to town. Look for the sign or ask for 武陵源汽车站 to catch the bus back to Wulingyuan Bus Station.

If you book a private car or taxi, set your morning drop-off to the upper visitor center (张家界大峡谷游客中心) and your afternoon pickup at the lower canyon exit (峡谷出口 / 双坪游客集散中心). This avoids having to travel back up the mountain at the end of your hike.

If your hotel is near the East Gate, ask the driver if the return bus stops at 标志门 before boarding.

Practical tips

  • Operating hours: Regular admission is 08:00 to 16:00, with ticket checking ending at 16:00. A morning time slot leaves ample time for the full bridge-and-canyon visit.
  • Bridge security: Use a phone for bridge photos. Large backpacks and heavy hard items are not allowed on the glass deck.
  • Luggage: Leave your suitcases at your Wulingyuan hotel. If you leave bags at the upper visitor center, you will need to make an extra trip back up the mountain after exiting at the canyon floor.
  • Switching hotels: If you are moving to Zhangjiajie city after the canyon, take the bus back to Wulingyuan first, pick up your bags from your hotel, and then take a bus or taxi into the city.
  • Weather: Clear days give you the best views down through the glass deck. On overcast days, the canyon streams and cliff scenery still make for an enjoyable hike.
