Huanglong Cave: rock chambers and the light show

Huanglong Cave (黄龙洞) features massive underground halls, hanging stalactites, and tall rock columns lit with colorful spotlights. Key landmarks include the soaring Dragon Palace chamber and the slender Sea-Calming Needle (定海神针) stalagmite.

The lighting is a central part of the experience. Upgraded projections and dragon stories illuminate the natural rock walls. Visitors who enjoy illuminated caverns will find plenty to see beyond the underground boat ride.

Follow the river to the Dragon Palace

The visitor route is about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles), with roughly 2.4 kilometers on foot and 800 meters on the underground river. Follow the one-way marked circuit toward the exit:

  1. Walk from the cave entrance through the first chambers to the boat landing.
  2. Board the boat on the Xiangshui River (响水河). The ride takes about 15 minutes past lit rock formations along the water.
  3. Continue on foot after landing. Pass the underground waterfall and climb the stairs into the upper chambers.
  4. Explore the Dragon Palace (龙宫), where dense clusters of stalagmites rise from the floor. Look for the Sea-Calming Needle (定海神针), a slender column 19.2 meters (63 feet) tall named after the magical staff of the Monkey King.
  5. Follow the walking path down to the exit. The cave exit opens into the outdoor garden area, leading back to the parking lot and bus stop.

The boat covers only one section of the cave. The rest requires climbing up and down hundreds of stairs between cave levels. Choose this route when everyone in your group can manage steady stair walking.

The stairs come in short flights with flat spots to pause. Take these breaks at your own pace; the boat ride gives you a seated rest in the middle of the visit.

Huanglong Cave tickets and when to arrive

Budget CNY 121 (≈ USD 18 ) per adult for the standard visit. This covers cave admission, the underground boat ride, and scenic-area narration. Huanglong Cave requires its own ticket, separate from the national forest park.

Book Huanglong Cave tickets online or buy them at the ticket window on arrival. Enter your US passport details when booking and bring your physical passport to enter the turnstiles.

From March 1 to October 31, hours are 08:00 to 18:00, with entry ending at 17:30. From November 1 to the end of February, hours are 08:30 to 17:30. Arrive in the morning or start by 14:00 in the afternoon to leave enough time for the full loop and your ride back to town.

Reach Huanglong Cave from Wulingyuan

Huanglong Cave sits east of Wulingyuan town in Hekou village (索溪峪镇河口村). Use the Huanglong Cave map location for directions. If you take a taxi or hail a ride through Alipay or WeChat, set your destination to 黄龙洞售票处.

The ticket office and the cave mouth sit about a 10 to 15-minute walk apart. Stroll through the park grounds, past the traditional waterwheels and souvenir corridor, to reach the cave entrance.

Wulingyuan Bus 1 costs CNY 2 (≈ USD 0.30 ) per person and runs from Wulingyuan Bus Station directly to the cave stop (黄龙洞). A taxi from central Wulingyuan takes about 20 minutes and costs around CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ). For your return, catch Bus 1 back from the roadside stop outside the main gate.

Baofeng Lake: cliff views and folk singing

Baofeng Lake suits travelers who want calm water views after days of hiking steep mountain trails. Green peaks rise straight out of the clear water, reflecting off the surface as your covered boat glides past.

Tujia singers stationed on traditional wooden houseboats sing folk songs across the water as tour boats cruise by. The relaxed 30 to 40-minute boat ride is the highlight of the trip.

During the cruise, guides point out rock formations like Fairy Looking in a Mirror (仙女照镜) and Golden Toad Holding the Moon (金蟾含月).

Follow the shuttle and boat route

Start at the Baofeng Lake ticket entrance (宝峰湖门票站) on Baofeng Road (宝峰路3号):

  1. Enter the main gate and board the scenic shuttle bus. The uphill ride takes about 10 minutes.
  2. Walk down a short flight of steps to the boat pier.
  3. Board the covered sightseeing boat for a 30 to 40-minute scenic cruise between the cliffs.
  4. Get off at the pier and follow the path to the return shuttle bus station.
  5. Take the shuttle down, then visit Baofeng Waterfall and the giant salamander pool near the exit before leaving.

Plan 1.5 to 2 hours for this full loop. A morning visit leaves time for lunch in town, while an early afternoon trip fits well after checking into your hotel.

See the waterfall near the entrance

Baofeng Waterfall (宝峰飞瀑) cascades over cliffs right beside the park entrance. An iron suspension bridge crosses the stream, giving you a clear view of the falls. This makes an easy photo stop on your way into or out of the park.

The waterfall served as a filming location for the classic Chinese television series Journey to the West. A nearby Monkey King statue and a pool with giant salamanders offer quick, interesting stops for families.

Baofeng Lake tickets and opening hours

Budget CNY 110 (≈ USD 16 ) per adult for admission, the round-trip shuttle bus, and the boat cruise. This breaks down into CNY 30 (≈ USD 4.5 ) for park entry, CNY 60 (≈ USD 9.0 ) for the boat, and CNY 20 (≈ USD 3.0 ) for the shuttle bus. This ticket is separate from your forest park ticket.

Buy tickets at the gate window or book Baofeng Lake tickets online using your US passport. Opening hours run from 07:00 to 17:40 in peak season (March to November) and 07:30 to 17:00 in low season (December to February).

Reach Baofeng Lake from Wulingyuan

Baofeng Lake sits just south of Wulingyuan town. A taxi from most central Wulingyuan hotels takes only 5 to 10 minutes and costs about CNY 10 to 15 (≈ USD 1.5–2.2 ). Direct your driver to 宝峰湖门票站.

Wulingyuan Bus 2 costs CNY 2 (≈ USD 0.30 ) per ride and links the East Gate / Wujiayu ticket station (标志门), Wulingyuan Bus Station, and the Baofeng Lake entrance terminal. Buses run every 30 to 60 minutes.

For your return trip, catch Bus 2 back toward town or pick up a metered taxi right outside the exit gate.

Compare walking, stairs, and optional climbs

  • Baofeng Lake (Standard Route): Very low physical effort. The shuttle bus handles the mountain climb, leaving only short walkways and a few steps down to the boat pier. It is ideal for tired legs, older parents, or young children.
  • Baofeng Lake (Walking Route): If you skip the shuttle bus, you must climb steep stairways called Cloud Ladder (云梯) and Hero's Slope (好汉坡). Take the shuttle unless you want an extra workout.
  • Eagle Nest Village (鹰窝寨): An optional hiking trail from the lake pier leads up to Eagle Nest Village, featuring mountain views and steep stone stairs. Check with staff at the pier to see if the trail is open before heading up.
  • Huanglong Cave: Moderate physical effort. While the underground boat ride provides seated rest, the full walking loop includes over 1,000 stone steps with steady climbs and descents between chambers.

Choosing around the weather

  • Clear, sunny days: Choose Baofeng Lake. Sunlight brings out vibrant emerald water reflections and sharp cliff details.
  • Rainy, foggy, or hot summer days: Choose Huanglong Cave. The cave stays a steady, comfortable 16°C (61°F) year-round and protects you completely from rain and heat. During severe rainstorms, check at the ticket desk to confirm all underground boat sections are running normally.

How to fit these visits into your itinerary

Stay in Wulingyuan town for easy access to both sights and the national forest park:

  • Half-day add-on: Pick one sight for a relaxed morning or afternoon, leaving the rest of the day to rest before your next mountain hike.
  • Full spare day: Tour Huanglong Cave in the morning, enjoy lunch in Wulingyuan town, and take the Baofeng Lake cruise in the afternoon.
  • Paired with the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge: Huanglong Cave sits along the road to the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge. You can explore the cave in the morning, have lunch nearby, and head to the Glass Bridge for the afternoon.
  • Arrival or departure days: If you arrive in Wulingyuan by noon, Baofeng Lake makes a gentle afternoon trip. On departure day, ensure your flight or train schedule leaves at least 3 hours of clear buffer time before booking a morning excursion.

Practical tips for both visits

  • Luggage: Store heavy suitcases at your Wulingyuan hotel front desk. Do not bring rolling bags into the cave stairs or onto shuttle buses and boat piers.
  • Footwear and clothing: Wear walking shoes with good grip. Cave paths can be damp and slippery on stone staircases. Bring a light jacket or sweater inside Huanglong Cave, as the 16°C (61°F) air feels chilly after a few minutes.
  • Restrooms: Use the restrooms outside near the ticket offices before entering the cave or boarding the lake shuttle.
