Ride Bailong Elevator up to the Avatar pillars, take the mountain shuttle buses and descend by the Tianzi cable car. Shorten the viewpoint paths along the way to match your energy. For a smaller outing, explore a single mountain area or Tianmen Cave.

For the main pillar views with minimal climbing, enter through Wulingyuan east gate (武陵源东门). Reserve a morning entry slot in advance with your US passport.

  1. Take the valley shuttle bus to Bailong lower station (百龙天梯下站). Use the small entrance lift before the main Bailong Elevator, then ride Bailong up the cliff face.
  2. Walk from the upper exit to the bus stop and ride to Mihuntai car park (迷魂台停车场). Walk to a nearby viewpoint for pillar photos and turn back when you are ready. Viewpoint paths have some steps.
  3. To complete the standard Yuanjiajie walk, continue past Qiankun Pillar (乾坤柱) to the First Bridge under Heaven car park (天下第一桥停车场). This takes 1.5 to 2 hours with stairs and photo stops. If you prefer less walking, return to Mihuntai car park, take the shuttle back to Bailong upper station, and ride the elevator down to finish at the east gate.
  4. From the bridge-side car park, take the mountain bus to Yangjiajie car park (杨家界停车场), then change buses for Tianzi Mountain and Helong Park (贺龙公园). Use Yangjiajie only as a transfer point, skipping its steep side trails.
  5. Take a seated meal break near Helong Park. The side paths to Imperial Brush Peaks (御笔峰) and Fairy Scattering Flowers (仙女散花) descend stairs that you must climb back up. Skip these side paths to save your knees.
  6. Return to the Helong Park bus stop, take the shuttle to Tianzi upper cableway station (天子山索道上站), ride down, then take the valley bus back to the east gate.

Buy one upward Bailong ride and one downward Tianzi ride. The two rides cost CNY 137 (≈ USD 21 ) per adult, totaling CNY 373 (≈ USD 56 ) per adult including the park admission ticket. This route uses transport between the two mountain areas, leaving you to decide how far to walk along the viewpoints.

Leave rugged side trails such as Wulongzhai, Tianbo Mansion, One Step to Heaven, and Yaozizhai off your plan. The full Golden Whip Stream walking trail is about 5.7 km. For a gentle stream walk, stroll briefly from Oxygen Square (大氧吧广场 / 老磨湾) and return to the South Gate, or start at Shuiraosimen (水绕四门) and return to its bus stop.

Forest park: Tianzi viewpoint and direct return

Start and end your trip at Wulingyuan east gate (武陵源东门 / 吴家峪门票站). This direct route works best if you stay in Wulingyuan town, where a short taxi ride gets you to the gate without wasting walking energy.

  1. Enter at your reserved time. Take the park shuttle bus to the lower station of the Tianzi Mountain Cableway (天子山索道下站).
  2. Ride up, then take the upper shuttle bus to Helong Park (贺龙公园).
  3. Follow the signed path to the viewing platform, which has gentle slopes and short steps. Enjoy the view of Imperial Brush Peaks (御笔峰), then walk back to the same bus stop. A simple rule is to walk 15 minutes out and turn around.
  4. Take a seated lunch break near Helong Park before heading down.
  5. Take the shuttle to the upper cable car station (天子山索道上站), ride down, and take the valley bus back to the east gate.

Park admission with shuttle buses costs CNY 236 (≈ USD 35 ) per adult. Two single cable car rides cost CNY 144 (≈ USD 22 ) per adult. This day trip totals CNY 380 (≈ USD 57 ) per adult. Book both upward and downward cable car rides in advance. The forest park ticket guide explains passes and booking rules.

Want the Avatar pillar instead?

Choose Yuanjiajie to see the Qiankun Pillar (乾坤柱), known as the Avatar floating mountain. From the east gate, take the park bus to the lower station of Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯下站), ride up, and take the shuttle bus to Mihuntai parking lot (迷魂台停车场).

The full viewpoint path connects Mihuntai, Qiankun Pillar, and the First Bridge under Heaven (天下第一桥), taking about 1.5 to 2 hours. For a shorter visit, view the pillars from the Mihuntai platform and turn back early. Return to the Mihuntai bus stop, take the shuttle to Bailong upper station, ride down, then take the valley bus back to the east gate.

Bailong Elevator costs CNY 65 (≈ USD 9.7 ) per adult each way, making the day CNY 366 (≈ USD 55 ) per adult including park entry. You can book Bailong Elevator tickets in advance.

For easier days, keep Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain on separate mornings. The park transport guide shows how the bus routes connect.

A short stream walk without mountain rides

If you prefer a shaded, flat walk along the river, enter through the south gate (森林公园门票站) and walk to Oxygen Square (大氧吧广场 / 老磨湾). Follow the start of Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪), then turn around along the same paved path whenever you are ready. Turning back early keeps the outing easy, as the full canyon crossing takes several hours. Park admission and buses cost CNY 236 (≈ USD 35 ) per adult, with no extra cable car fees.

Tianmen: see the cave or add a short summit visit

Start at the city cable car lower station (天门山索道下站). Mountain transport routes operate as follows:

Only Route C operates from 13 October 2026. The long city-to-summit cable car is closed for upgrades. Take the free shuttle from the city lower station (天门山索道下站) to the mountain gate (天门山国家森林公园-山门). You can also take a taxi directly to the mountain gate. From there, ride the Cave Express Cableway up, walk through the Fuyuan connector path to the cave square, and use the five lower escalators to skip the 999 steps. Seven upper escalators take you to the mountaintop. Descend using the same path back to the mountain gate, then take the free shuttle or a taxi back to the city.

At the plaza, ride the five-section lower escalators (登天门扶梯) up inside the mountain to the cave opening. These completely bypass the steep 999-step outdoor stairway. Enjoy the view through the natural arch, take photos, and ride the escalators back down to the plaza.

You can book Tianmen Mountain admission online. The standard adult ticket costs CNY 285 (≈ USD 43 ). The lower escalator ride up costs CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ) per person, while the downward ride is free during current upgrades. Budget CNY 317 (≈ USD 47 ) per adult for this trip.

To see the mountaintop, continue behind the cave onto the seven-section upper escalators, which are included with your mountain ticket in both directions. From the top exit, take a short stroll toward the north viewpoint (北俯视天门), then return to the escalators. Descend by the upper and lower escalators to your return transport. The Tianmen low-step route guide covers summit loop options.

Grand Canyon: scenic glass bridge with less descent

Grand Canyon Route B crosses the glass bridge, descends into the canyon, and finishes with a scenic boat ride. Plan for 3 to 4 hours. The entire route covers about 3.5 km, combining walking paths, elevators, and a boat ride.

  1. Start at the upper visitor center (游客中心) and cross the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge (云天渡).
  2. Continue to the east experience center (桥东体验中心) and the cliff walkway.
  3. Take the lift branch down toward Rainbow Square (彩虹广场). Use the scenic elevator (观光电梯), treasure elevator (寻宝电梯), and sculpture elevator (雕塑电梯) to bypass the long outdoor staircases.
  4. Walk along the canyon floor past Momo Cave (摸摸洞) toward Shenquan Lake (神泉湖).
  5. Board the included boat to the lower canyon exit. Meet your taxi or bus at the lower parking lot (峡谷出口 / 山下停车场) to return to Wulingyuan.

The optional experience pass costs CNY 120 (≈ USD 18 ) per person on top of the Route B ticket and covers the descent elevators. The Grand Canyon ticket guide has full pricing details. Taking the elevators saves your knees on the descent, though you still need to walk along the valley floor trail before reaching the boat.

Practical tips for easier days

Stay in Wulingyuan for the forest park and Grand Canyon, and stay in Zhangjiajie city center for Tianmen Mountain. With two full days, visit one mountain area per day and keep your afternoons relaxed. The four-day forest park ticket lets you spread different peaks across separate mornings.

When boarding your morning cable car or lift, check with staff for the operating times of the last downward ride and final park shuttle bus so you can turn around without rushing.

If you need directions at Tianmen Mountain, show this phrase to staff:

  • 我想坐扶梯,不走九百九十九级台阶。 (I want to take the escalators, not the 999 steps.)

When returning to your bus in the forest park, show this phrase:

  • 我要坐车回武陵源东门。 (I need the bus back to Wulingyuan East Gate.)
