Setting up WeChat Pay before you fly makes paying for meals, taxis, and park tickets in Zhangjiajie simple. You can register using your US mobile number and link a US Visa, Mastercard, Discover, or American Express card. Charges go straight to your card at the counter, so you never need a local bank account or a pre-loaded balance.
Prepare your card and SMS access
Install the official WeChat app before leaving home. You can register with your US mobile number. Ensure your home carrier plan lets you receive SMS text messages while traveling in China, as your bank will send security verification codes when you add the card or approve certain purchases. A data-only travel eSIM provides internet, but it cannot receive text messages sent to your US phone number.
WeChat Pay supports international credit and debit cards across Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Diners Club, JCB, American Express, and UnionPay. Check your bank app before departure to ensure international transactions and online security prompts are turned on.
Have your US passport ready for identity verification when setting up higher transaction limits.
Open the wallet and link your card
- In WeChat, tap Me → Services → Wallet (我 → 服务 → 钱包).
- Tap Cards → Add a Card (银行卡 → 添加银行卡) and accept the payment terms.
- Enter your card number, expiration date, and CVV security code. Match your name exactly as shown on your passport and card billing statement.
- Complete the identity check. Upload a clear photo of your US passport information page when prompted.
- Enter the SMS verification code from your bank or approve the security prompt in your banking app, then create a 6-digit payment password.
If the Services tab does not appear on your profile screen, turn it on by going to Me → Settings → General → Tools → Weixin Pay → Enable, then return to your main menu.
A wallet balance of zero is normal. Every purchase bills directly to your linked card, so you do not need to transfer funds into WeChat before shopping.
Scan a merchant code or show your payment code

Look for the green 微信支付 (WeChat Pay) logo at shop counters, ticket desks, and restaurant cash registers. You will pay in one of two ways.
Scan the merchant QR code
Tap + → Scan (扫一扫) in WeChat and point your camera at the shop's printed stand or counter QR code. Enter the total bill amount in CNY if prompted, select your linked card, confirm the payment, and show the green success screen to the cashier.
This method is standard at sit-down restaurants in Wulingyuan, small snack stalls, and ticket booths.
Let the cashier scan your barcode
Tap + → Money (收付款) from the home screen or open Services → Money to show your personal payment barcode and QR code. Make sure your linked card is selected as the payment method. The cashier scans your screen with their handheld reader, and the transaction finishes automatically.
Supermarkets, convenience stores, and fast-food counters in Zhangjiajie use this scan method.
Pay for taxis, hotels, and attractions
When taking a regular taxi from Zhangjiajie West Station or Hehua Airport, scan the driver's printed commercial QR code after arriving at your destination. If you hail rides through Didi or local mini-programs, WeChat Pay settles the ride automatically upon completion.
Linked international cards work only for official merchant transactions. They cannot send peer-to-peer transfers or red packets to personal accounts. If a driver or guesthouse host presents a personal account code that declines your card, ask for their business code by showing: 可以用商家收款码吗? ("Can I use your business payment code?").
When buying admission on local mini-programs, choose WeChat Pay at checkout and approve the amount with your linked card. Check the forest park ticket guide and Tianmen Mountain guide for specific reservation steps.
Understand card fees and refunds
Single merchant transactions of CNY 200 (≈ USD 30 ≈ USD 30) or less have a 0% fee. For transactions above CNY 200 (≈ USD 30 ≈ USD 30), a standard 3% fee applies to the entire amount. For example, a bill of CNY 300 (≈ USD 45 ≈ USD 45) incurs a CNY 9 (≈ USD 1.3 ≈ USD 1.3) fee, totaling CNY 309 (≈ USD 46 ≈ USD 46).
Through December 31, 2026, Tencent offers a first-time user promotion: visitors linking an international card for the first time receive a fee waiver for their first 90 consecutive calendar days, covering daily spending up to CNY 1,000 (≈ USD 150 ≈ USD 150).
Your US bank determines the final USD exchange rate and applies any foreign transaction fees according to your card terms. If a merchant issues a refund to your card, WeChat returns the corresponding service fee proportionally.
Alternative: Use the TenPayGo app
If you prefer not to register for the full WeChat social app, download Tencent's standalone TenPayGo app from the App Store or Google Play. You can sign up using an email address, link an overseas Visa, Mastercard, JCB card, or Apple Pay, and scan WeChat Pay merchant codes across Zhangjiajie without needing a WeChat profile.
Practical troubleshooting tips
- Keep your US SIM card active or accessible for bank verification texts while traveling in China.
- If a card payment fails, check whether your US bank flagged the transaction for international fraud review. You can also switch between linked backup cards in WeChat.
- If a payment shows as pending, open Me → Services → Wallet → Bills (账单) to confirm the status before attempting to pay the cashier a second time.
- For direct payment assistance within mainland China, dial customer support at 95017 or call +86 571 95017.
