Choose by visibility and today's opening notice

A general weather forecast rarely tells the whole story on the mountains. Check rainfall, cloud level, and official scenic-area notices separately. Light rain can leave nearby sandstone pillars visible through moving mist, while dense fog can block all views even after the rain stops.

Morning condition Recommended plan Route to take
Light rain, peaks visible, trails open Valley walking under the cliffs East gate, shuttle bus to Water Surrounds Four Gates, out-and-back walk along Golden Whip Stream
Thick fog hiding all upper viewpoints Swap mountain days for indoor sights Yellow Dragon Cave, followed by lunch in Wulingyuan town
Heavy downpour or facility closure notice Follow park safety alerts Visit the cave if open and reachable; otherwise explore Wulingyuan town
Clouds breaking with opening skies Head straight to one upper plateau Take Tianzi Mountain cableway or Bailong Elevator, returning via the east gate

Baofeng Lake and the Grand Canyon glass bridge are fully outdoor sites without overhead cover. When thick mist covers the area, they do not offer the indoor protection of Yellow Dragon Cave.

Check the actual route before leaving your hotel

Ask your hotel front desk to verify morning mountain notices before heading out. Specify the exact trail, elevator, or cable car you plan to use, because bad weather can close an individual ride while the rest of the park stays open.

Useful questions to show your front desk:

  • For the valley trail: 今天金鞭溪开放吗? ("Is Golden Whip Stream open today?")
  • For upper transport: 百龙天梯和天子山索道运行吗? ("Are Bailong Elevator and Tianzi Cableway running?")

You can also contact the customer service lines directly:

  • Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: 0744-5712345 (ask about entrance status, Golden Whip Stream, and return shuttle buses)
  • Yellow Dragon Cave: 0744-5618489 (check road access and opening hours)
  • Tianmen Mountain: 0744-8366666 (state your booked date and route line)

Choose the uphill and downhill facilities together so the whole route is open.

Light rain: a short Golden Whip Stream morning

This simple route starts and finishes at the Wulingyuan East Gate (吴家峪门票站). It works best from a hotel in Wulingyuan town, placing you right by local restaurants for lunch when you finish.

  1. Arrive at the East Gate during your booked entry time window.
  2. Board the park shuttle bus to Water Surrounds Four Gates (水绕四门).
  3. Follow the marked path along Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪) into the valley floor.
  4. Walk for 60 to 90 minutes round-trip, including photo stops on the valley path.
  5. Turn around and walk back along the same trail to Water Surrounds Four Gates.
  6. Take the shuttle bus back to the East Gate and head into Wulingyuan town for lunch. Walk or take a taxi back to the same hotel.

Setting a turnaround time of 30 to 45 minutes keeps your morning relaxed. The towering cliff faces, lush forest, and rushing stream provide clear, atmospheric sights even when high peaks are lost in clouds.

Stay on the main valley floor path. Side trails with stairs lead up the cliffs and turn a casual stroll into a strenuous climb. For another flat valley alternative, Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊) offers a short walk or a mini-train ride. Check the forest park transport guide for detailed shuttle connections.

If the afternoon clears, choose one upper area

If clouds lift and the sky opens after lunch, focus on a single upper scenic plateau instead of trying to rush through both. Yuanjiajie (袁家界) features close-up views of the iconic Avatar pillars, while Tianzi Mountain (天子山) offers wide, sweeping panoramas.

To visit Tianzi Mountain:

  1. Take the valley shuttle bus to the lower Tianzi Cableway station and ride up.
  2. At the top station, take the upper shuttle to Helong Park (贺龙公园) to view the rock formations.
  3. Return on the same shuttle to the cableway, ride back down to the valley, and take the shuttle bus to the East Gate.

Purchase round-trip tickets for the cable car. If you stepped out of the park for lunch, make sure to book an afternoon entry slot for the East Gate on the official mini-program. Ask the gate staff for the time of the final downhill cable car and the last shuttle bus back to your entrance so you do not miss your ride.

A full clear day gives time for the one-day mountain route. After a wet valley morning, keep to one upper area.

Dense fog: Yellow Dragon Cave and Wulingyuan

Yellow Dragon Cave (黄龙洞) provides an underground, weather-protected half-day trip with illuminated karst chambers and a boat ride on a subterranean river. Plan on spending 2 to 3 hours on site. Budget CNY 121 (≈ USD 18 ) per adult for regular admission, separate from the forest park ticket. You can book Yellow Dragon Cave tickets in advance when shifting your itinerary.

From the Wulingyuan Bus Station (武陵源汽车站), take Bus 1 toward 黄龙洞 for CNY 2 (≈ USD 0.30 ) per person per ride. If using a taxi or ride-hailing app, set your destination to the Yellow Dragon Cave Ticket Office (黄龙洞售票处). Allow about half a day including travel time, then return to Wulingyuan town for lunch.

The walk from the ticket hall to the cave entrance passes outdoor waterwheels. Inside the cave, the tour includes a 15-minute boat ride and several sections of damp stairs. The cave stays around 16°C. Most of the visit involves walking and stairs. Choose a shorter town day if you want to rest your legs. Return on Bus 1 to Wulingyuan and your same hotel.

A cave day from a city hotel

If staying in Zhangjiajie downtown, go to the Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station (张家界中心汽车站) next to the regular railway station. Direct coaches to Wulingyuan Bus Station (武陵源汽车站) cost CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ) per person each way and take roughly 50 to 60 minutes. When arriving in Wulingyuan, ask the ticket counter for the departure time of the last return bus to the city, then take local Bus 1 to the cave. Return by Bus 1 to Wulingyuan, then coach to the city terminal and your same hotel. Keep the cave as the main visit that day.

Reorder three days before starting the park ticket

When your first morning is rainy or foggy but the forecast improves for later days, adjust your schedule from a Wulingyuan base:

Day Activity Base and transit
Day 1 (rain or dense fog) Yellow Dragon Cave, relaxed lunch, and Wulingyuan town Wulingyuan hotel
Day 2 (clearer weather) National Forest Park upper viewpoints (Yuanjiajie or Tianzi Mountain) East Gate, return to Wulingyuan hotel
Day 3 (light rain or mixed clouds) Golden Whip Stream valley walk, tailored to your energy East Gate, return to Wulingyuan hotel

In this plan, activate your forest park ticket on Day 2. The four-day ticket window runs for four consecutive calendar days starting on your selected first entry date. Visiting another attraction on a day inside that window uses up one of your four days.

If you need to change your starting date before using the ticket, do so through your original booking platform. Remember to select the entry gate, date, and morning or afternoon time slot for every forest park entry, including repeat visits. Learn more in the forest park ticket guide.

Decide whether to keep your Tianmen day

Tianmen Mountain (天门山) is near Zhangjiajie city. Tianzi Mountain is inside the National Forest Park. Each has separate tickets and transport systems.

Tianmen Mountain's cliffside walkways, glass skywalks, and Heaven's Gate opening (天门洞) are fully outdoors and exposed. When dense fog blankets the summit, visibility can drop to zero. If you encounter heavy fog on your mountain day, Yellow Dragon Cave is a much better choice.

Only Route C operates from 13 October 2026. Take the free shuttle from 天门山索道下站, the city lower station, to 天门山国家森林公园-山门, the mountain gate. Ride the Cave Express Cableway to the cave square, reach Heaven’s Gate by the 999 steps or lower escalators, then take the seven upper escalators to the summit. Return by the same route to the mountain gate, then take the city shuttle or a taxi. The main city cableway is closed for rebuilding. Check the Tianmen tickets and routes guide for details.

With three full days, replace the day 3 stream walk with Tianmen if it is your priority. Switch from your Wulingyuan hotel to a downtown city hotel the evening before your Tianmen visit.

Practical tips for wet paths and photographs

Drifting mountain mist can create stunning scenes, revealing pillars layer by layer and forming seas of clouds above the valleys. When nearby pillars are visible through moving clouds, take close-up photos right away before visibility shifts.

Wet stone steps can become slick. Wear shoes with dependable tread, use handrails on stairways, and wear a lightweight raincoat rather than carrying an umbrella to keep your hands free. Keep a light layer for the cool cave. On valley walks, stick to the main path along the stream to avoid unnecessary steep climbs.
