Most sit-down meals in Zhangjiajie are served family-style for the table to share. For two people, starting with one small shared pot, a mild vegetable dish, and two bowls of rice gives you a balanced meal without over-ordering. Use these handy phrases and portion rules to order smoothly from paper menus or mobile apps.

Most sit-down dining in Zhangjiajie is served family-style. Rather than ordering individual entrees, everyone shares the dishes in the middle of the table. For two people, start with one small shared pot, one fresh vegetable dish, and two bowls of steamed rice. You can always add another dish later after checking the portion size. Compare classic regional dishes in what to eat in Zhangjiajie.
When dining solo, individual meals such as rice noodles (米粉), wheat noodles (面条), or stir-fry over rice (盖饭) are much easier to size than large shared pots.
To order a standard meal for two, show this sentence to your server:
我们两个人。想点一个小份三下锅、一个青菜,再来两碗米饭。这个量够吗?
("We are two people. We would like a small sanxiaguo, one vegetable dish, and two bowls of rice. Is that enough?")
Check whether the restaurant offers a two-person set meal, which often costs less than ordering items separately. You can also ask whether a large main dish is available as a half portion.
Read portion sizes and menu terms
Many restaurants feature illustrated menus. Using the Chinese dish name alongside the photo helps your server confirm ingredients and sizes quickly.
| Menu character | Meaning |
|---|---|
One plate or portion, usually for sharing |
One bowl, standard for rice or noodles |
Small, medium, or large portion |
A shared pot for the whole table |
One skewer |
500 grams (about 1.1 pounds) |
For whole fish or items priced by weight, ask ("Is that price for one portion or per 500 grams?"). Always confirm the total weight and price before the kitchen begins cooking: 这条鱼多重?一共多少钱?
To double-check dish size, ask ("How many people does this portion serve?"). Rice is sometimes billed per individual bowl and sometimes charged as an all-you-can-eat wooden bucket for the table. ("How is rice charged?").
Choose your ingredients for 三下锅
The signature local dish is 三下锅, a single shared stew or dry pot. Despite its name, you receive one combined dish rather than three separate pots. You pick your preferred meats, tofu products, and vegetables to cook together.
Common meat options include 排骨 (pork ribs), 腊肉 (cured smoked pork), 牛肉 (beef), and organ meats like 猪肚 (pork stomach) and 肥肠 (pork intestine). Point to your chosen meats and ask ("Which ingredients can we choose?"). If you prefer no organ meats, simply show 不要内脏。
A 干锅 is a sizzled dry pot with minimal liquid; a 汤锅 comes in a rich hot broth. If you want a separate comforting soup alongside a stir-fry, try 岩耳炖土鸡 (chicken soup with cliff-grown rock fungus). For a classic braised pork belly served with steamed buns, look for 扣肉. To see what fresh greens are in the kitchen today, ask
Control chilli and spice levels
Hunan cuisine is famous for bold fresh chillies and chopped pickled peppers. If you do not eat spicy food, tell your server clearly before the kitchen starts cooking.
Mild heat, but still cooked with real chillies.
Zero chilli.
No numbing Sichuan pepper.
No fresh cilantro.
To ensure no spicy oils or pickled garnishes sneak into your dish, show this complete request:
不要辣椒,也不要辣椒油和剁椒。
("No chilli, chilli oil, or chopped pickled chilli.")
To find out if a pre-seasoned specialty can be prepared mild, ask ("Can this dish be made without chilli?"). If the base marinade is already spicy, choose a different made-to-order stir-fry instead.
Show specific dietary requests
Always explain dietary restrictions before placing your order. Find dedicated eateries in our vegetarian and vegan food guide.
If you have several food preferences or dietary needs, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to show staff before ordering.
When ordering stir-fried greens, confirm cooking fats and seasonings by asking: 青菜里会放猪油、肉汤、蚝油或虾皮吗? ("Do the greens contain pork fat, meat broth, oyster sauce, or dried shrimp?").
| Dietary need | Chinese phrase to show |
|---|---|
| Vegetarian |
| No meat broth | |
| No pork or pork fat | |
| Halal food | |
| Peanut allergy | |
For vegetable or tofu dishes, request clean plant oil: 可以用植物油炒,不放肉末和肉汤吗? ("Can you cook with vegetable oil, without minced meat or meat broth?").
For severe food allergies, ask staff to verify ingredients and cooking pans with the chef: 请问厨师,酱料里有没有花生?能用干净的锅和餐具做吗? ("Please check with the cook if the sauce contains peanuts and if they can use a clean pan and utensils.").
Order via QR code or paper menu
Most tables feature a QR code sticker. Scan it using WeChat or Alipay to open the digital menu. You can select dishes, choose portion sizes, and type special cooking notes in the 备注 (notes) field. For strict dietary needs, show your Chinese phrase directly to a server as well.
Common buttons in mobile menus include 加入购物车 (add to cart), 下单 (place order), and 支付 (pay). Some mobile systems require immediate payment when submitting your order, while others settle the bill at the front desk when you finish.
If you prefer a physical menu, ask ("Do you have a paper menu?"). You can translate the menu with your phone camera, point to what you want, and ask staff to write it down: 请帮我们点菜。
Settle the bill and take leftovers
To ask for your bill, say 买单。 ("Check, please. Please show us the bill."). Review the itemized slip to confirm dishes and any small table charges for wet towels, tea, or rice.
When paying with Alipay or WeChat Pay, scan the cashier's printed QR code or show your app payment code on your phone screen. To pay in cash, say US credit cards work when linked inside Alipay and WeChat Pay, but physical swipe terminals are uncommon in smaller casual eateries.
If you are splitting expenses, ask ("Can we pay separately?") before the cashier finalizes the receipt. To take leftover food back to your hotel, show 请帮我打包 ("Please pack this for takeaway").
Practical dining tips
- Point directly to the menu item as you name it, and confirm both the size and quantity.
- When eating with a group that has mixed spice tolerances, order at least one non-spicy vegetable dish and a clear soup alongside spicy pots.
- To request shared serving utensils for the table, ask
- If you bought a discounted group dining voucher (团购), show it to staff before ordering so the kitchen prepares the exact set items included.
