For your first dinner in Zhangjiajie, order a shared mixed meat pot or rock-ear chicken soup with greens and rice. Eat in Wulingyuan between forest park days and in downtown Zhangjiajie after visiting Tianmen Mountain. Fresh rice noodles make a fast, budget-friendly breakfast, while 素斋楼 serves vegetarian noodle bowls on the Tianmen summit.
Choose dinner near your hotel
Stay in Wulingyuan (武陵源) for consecutive forest park days and eat in town after leaving the park gates. Stay in Zhangjiajie city (永定区) for your Tianmen Mountain day and enjoy dinner downtown. Match your base to your sightseeing schedule with our where to stay guide.
In the city centre, Nanmenkou Food Street (南门口美食街), right across from Dayong Ancient Town, offers street snacks and sit-down Hunan restaurants. It works well when you want to try several small bites in one evening walk.
In Wulingyuan, Xibu Street (溪布街) brings together snack stalls and souvenir shops. For a full dinner after a day on the trails, pick a local Tujia restaurant near your hotel or close to the park East Gate.
Choose a meal for your group
Two people can start with a small mixed pot, one vegetable side, and rice. For three or four people, add a second main dish with a different texture, such as steamed pork belly or chicken soup. Solo travelers will find a bowl of rice noodles much easier than ordering large shared dishes.
| What you want | Dish to look for | How it is served |
|---|---|---|
| Sizzling first dinner | 三下锅 (mixed meat pot) | Shared pot with rice |

| Tender pork slices | 土家扣肉 (steamed pork belly) | Shared plate over preserved vegetables |
| Light, savoury broth | 岩耳炖土鸡 (rock-ear chicken) | Shared pot of chicken and broth |
| Quick breakfast or lunch | 米粉 (rice noodles) | Individual bowl per person |
| Warm snack | 蒿子粑粑 (herb rice cakes) | Individual cakes or shared plate |
Mixed meat pot: 三下锅

This is the classic local dish to try if you enjoy hearty meat. Cured pork, pork intestine, stomach, or ribs are cooked with tofu and vegetables. You choose both the meats and the cooking style. In Chinese, 肥肠 means pork large intestine, 猪肚 means pork stomach, and 腊肉 means cured pork.
A dry pot, 干锅, has little liquid and a strong chilli kick. A soup pot, 汤锅, simmers meat and vegetables in savoury broth.
At 李憨憨三下锅 (天门山索道店) in the Xinsong Happy Town complex (新松机器人欢乐城), the signature dry pot (憨憨三下锅) costs about CNY 78 (≈ USD 12 ≈ USD 12) per pot, while the traditional soup pot is about CNY 135 (≈ USD 20 ≈ USD 20) per pot. A small pot with greens and rice makes an easy meal for two.
For a city meal on Ziwu Road, 胡师傅三下锅 (子午路总店) serves its signature pot next to Zhangjiajie Junsheng Painting Institute (张家界军声画院). Expect to spend about CNY 57 (≈ USD 8.5 ≈ USD 8.5) per person.
Smoked pork: 土家腊肉

土家腊肉 has a firm texture with deep smoke and salt. Slices are stir-fried with garlic shoots, chilli, or seasonal vegetables. Order a plate with rice when you want to taste cured pork on its own. If your mixed pot already contains cured pork, choose a fresh vegetable dish instead.
李憨憨三下锅 (天门山索道店) serves cured pork stewed with dried tofu strips (湘西腊肉炖腊干丝) for about CNY 45 (≈ USD 6.7 ≈ USD 6.7) per dish.
Steamed pork belly: 土家扣肉

土家扣肉 offers melt-in-your-mouth pork belly steamed over savoury preserved mustard greens. The rich slices pair well with plain rice or soft steamed buns.
In Wulingyuan, 筷乐湘西•地道湘西土菜 (魅力湘西店) serves steamed pork belly with small buns (乡里扣肉夹馍馍) on the second floor of Charming Xiangxi Cultural Square on Gaoyun Road (高云路魅力湘西文化广场2楼). Budget about CNY 68 (≈ USD 10 ≈ USD 10) per person.
Rock-ear chicken: 岩耳炖土鸡
Rock ear is a dark, edible wild lichen harvested from cliff walls. Simmered with local chicken, it creates a rich, comforting broth with tender dark pieces. This makes a great non-spicy centerpiece when your table wants hot soup alongside dry-fried dishes.
A shared pot generally costs between CNY 128 (≈ USD 19 ≈ USD 19) and CNY 198 (≈ USD 30 ≈ USD 30). For a convenient Wulingyuan location serving 岩耳炖鸡汤, see Suoxi Mountain Village below.
Kudzu starch: a sweet bowl or savoury slices
葛根粉 is a starch extracted from wild kudzu roots. Mixed with hot water, it turns into a thick, glossy pudding that can be sweetened with sugar for a comforting snack.
For a savoury dinner dish, look for 葛根粉炒腊肉. The set starch is sliced and stir-fried with cured pork, soaking up the smoky rendered fat.唐师傅湘西名菜馆 (武陵路店) in Wulingyuan near Genli Shopping Mall (亘立购物广场) serves popular kudzu dishes, with meals averaging about CNY 70 (≈ USD 10 ≈ USD 10) per person.
Rice noodles and cold noodles
米粉 provide a fast, budget-friendly breakfast or lunch. Choose a topping such as beef (牛肉米粉) or pickled mustard greens (酸菜米粉).
慈利米粉 (梓园路店) at 梓园路102号 in Wulingyuan serves generous noodle bowls for about CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ≈ USD 1.9) per person.
For a cool summer lunch, try local cold noodles (凉面). These chewy wheat noodles come tossed in a tomato dressing with pickles, peanuts, beef, or braised pork ear. You can find a popular row of noodle shops along Shuangyong Road (双拥路) near 雅典国际家园 in the city.
Note that 米豆腐 is a local rice-tofu snack, not soy tofu.
Herb rice cakes and sour fish
蒿子粑粑 blend glutinous rice flour with fragrant wild mugwort leaves. Steamed cakes are soft and chewy, while pan-fried versions have a crisp crust. Small cakes cost roughly CNY 3 to CNY 6 (≈ USD 0.45–0.90 ≈ USD 0.45–0.90) each and are sold at street stalls as well as restaurants like 胡师傅三下锅 (子午路总店).
If you enjoy tart fermented dishes, look for 酸酢鱼. Small river fish are cured with toasted rice flour before frying, creating a sour, tangy flavour. A shared plate costs roughly CNY 48 to CNY 68 (≈ USD 7.2–10 ≈ USD 7.2–10); watch for small bones as you eat.
Meal plans for your park days
| Your day | Recommended meal plan |
|---|---|
| Forest park from Wulingyuan | Breakfast in town, packed trail lunch, then a hearty Tujia dinner near your hotel |
| Tianmen Mountain | Breakfast downtown, summit vegetarian lunch at 素斋楼, then dinner in the city |
| Grand Canyon from Wulingyuan | Eat in Wulingyuan before or after your half-day trip |
| Arrival evening in the city | Dinner near your hotel or street snacks at Nanmenkou Food Street |
When hiking between Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, allow 30 to 45 minutes for lunch after the First Bridge walk before catching the mountain shuttle bus. This fits smoothly into the one day forest route. Buy bread, fruit, and snacks in Wulingyuan before entering the park gates so you can eat whenever you get hungry.
Temple noodles and vegetables at 素斋楼
While exploring the summit on your Tianmen Mountain day, stop for lunch at 素斋楼. It sits directly beside Tianmen Mountain Temple (天门山寺) in the southern summit area (天界佛国), serving vegetarian noodle bowls and vegetable dishes. Walking the scenic West Line through Cherry Bay (樱桃湾) brings you straight to the temple grounds.

Two restaurants to start with
索溪山寨·湘西饮食文化博物馆 (标志门店) is a dependable choice near the forest park East Gate. Find it at the southeast corner of Jundi and Tuofeng roads (军邸路与驼峰路交叉口东南角). Try 三下锅, rock-ear chicken soup, or cured-meat claypot rice. Expect to spend about CNY 73 (≈ USD 11 ≈ USD 11) per person.
寨嫂当家 (天门山索道店) is handy for dinner near the lower Tianmen cableway station in the city. It is located in Building S2 at Huatiancheng on Xingmin Road (兴民路华天城S2栋). Signature dishes include 三下锅 and chicken hotpot (钵子鸡), with meals averaging about CNY 49 (≈ USD 7.3 ≈ USD 7.3) per person.
Daily food budget
A baseline allowance of CNY 110 (≈ USD 16 ≈ USD 16) per person per day covers breakfast, a packed lunch, a sit-down dinner, and snacks. Spend more on a shared restaurant dinner if your hotel includes breakfast, or add extra for specialty coffee and dessert.
In Chinese restaurants, dishes are shared across the whole table. When two people split a pot, add the dish price once and divide the total bill. A price marked 人均 indicates the average spend per person; 份 means a standard plate, and 锅 means a pot.

Practical tips for ordering
Specify your spice level before your food hits the wok. 微辣 means mild spicy, while 不要辣椒 means completely non-spicy. To order a mixed pot without organ meats, say 不要内脏 and pick meats like ribs, beef, or cured pork. If you do not eat pork, use the phrase 不要猪肉.
If you have several food preferences or dietary needs, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to show staff before ordering.
To check portion sizes when ordering for a group, show the server 这个锅够几个人吃? (How many people does this pot serve?).
For vegetarian dining, ask about cooking fats and broth bases, as many vegetable dishes are stir-fried in pork lard or seasoned with bone broth. Halal dining requires certified halal kitchens, not just omitting pork. Let the restaurant know about severe peanut allergies before ordering.
