Direct high-speed trains run from Chongqing East (重庆东站) to Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站) in about 2 to 3 hours. Once you arrive at Zhangjiajie West, a short car ride takes about 20 minutes to downtown Yongding for Tianmen Mountain, or 30 to 40 minutes to Wulingyuan for the national forest park.
Choose your train and Chongqing station
Search 重庆东 → 张家界西 for the direct high-speed route. The checked Chongqing East services take about 2–3 hours. A morning departure leaves time to reach your hotel in the afternoon. A later train lets you spend more of the day in Chongqing.
Chongqing North (重庆北站) and Chongqing West (重庆西站) are separate hubs. For the same checked date, sampled services from West took 3 hours 35 minutes to 3 hours 52 minutes. Those from North took 3 hours 53 minutes to 4 hours 19 minutes. East is the quickest rail option. A hotel closer to North or West can reduce your trip to the station; compare the whole journey before choosing. The Chongqing station guide helps you choose between the hubs.
The reference fare above is for a second-class seat on the checked travel date. Choose your own date and train to see its fare. First class has wider seats and more legroom; second class suits this short journey.
If you arrive at Chongqing Jiangbei Airport, search with 江北机场 as your starting point. Compare the available rail connection with a transfer to Chongqing East, including immigration and baggage collection.
Allow time from hotel to hotel
For planning, allow about 4–5.5 hours from a central Chongqing hotel to a Yongding hotel. Allow about 4.5–6 hours to a Wulingyuan hotel. These are estimates for the whole journey, including:
- The ride from your Chongqing hotel to the departure station.
- Arrival at the station about 60 minutes before the train leaves.
- Around 2–3 hours on the train from Chongqing East.
- Leaving Zhangjiajie West Station and taking a car to your hotel.
A bus adds waiting time and the last walk or taxi ride from the bus station. Use your hotel's exact address to choose between Yongding and Wulingyuan in the where to stay guide. Keep the transfer day separate from the full sightseeing days in the three-day Zhangjiajie itinerary.
For the full two-city trip, use the Chongqing and Zhangjiajie itinerary.
Get to Chongqing East
From downtown Chongqing, ride metro Line 6 to (刘家坪). Walk across the same platform to board the Chongqing East branch train. At Chongqing East (重庆东站), follow the signs upstairs to the departures hall. The Chongqing East Station guide covers platform routes and exits.
If you take a taxi or ride-hailing car, set your destination to 重庆东站进站口 (Chongqing East Station Entrance). Arrive about 60 minutes before departure to clear baggage scanners and the staffed passport gate.
Transfer from Zhangjiajie West to your hotel
At Zhangjiajie West, follow the exit signs (出口). This high-speed terminal is 张家界西站. Do not mix it up with the older downtown terminal, 张家界站. When booking a hotel driver, specify the West station.
Downtown Yongding for Tianmen Mountain
Stay in Yongding if you want to visit Tianmen Mountain on your arrival afternoon or the following morning. A taxi or ride-hailing car to downtown hotels or the Tianmen Mountain Cableway takes about 20 minutes. Follow the terminal signs to the official taxi line (出租车) or the app pickup zone (网约车).
City bus 17 costs 2 yuan (≈ USD 0.30 ≈ USD 0.30) per person and leaves from the station hub stop (高铁枢纽站). For the lower cableway station, get off at 武陵山珍馆站. Match your arrival timing to your booked cable car slot using the Tianmen Mountain guide.
Wulingyuan for the national forest park
For Wulingyuan, exit the rail station and turn right to the coach terminal (高铁汽车客运站). Buy a scenic bus (城景巴士) ticket to 武陵源汽车站. It costs about CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ≈ USD 1.9) per person and takes roughly 40 minutes to Wulingyuan Bus Station. Then walk or take a short taxi ride to your hotel.
A taxi or ride-hailing car directly to Wulingyuan takes 30–40 minutes and costs around CNY 80–100 (≈ USD 12–15 ≈ USD 12–15) per car. This saves the last bus-station transfer when you have several suitcases. Choose a hotel near the forest park entrance you plan to use.
Zhangjiajie to Chongqing: the return trip
Search 张家界西 → 重庆东 for the return train. Direct services to Chongqing East take about 2–3 hours, with the fastest taking 2 hours 2 minutes. Choose the arrival hub for your Chongqing hotel or onward train. In the checked return services, one train took 3 hours 20 minutes to Chongqing West; another took 3 hours 58 minutes to Chongqing North.
From a Yongding hotel, allow about 20 minutes by car to Zhangjiajie West, plus a separate 60 minutes at the station. Leaving your hotel about 1.5 hours before departure allows for these steps.
From Wulingyuan, allow 30–40 minutes by car, plus 60 minutes at the station. Leave your hotel about 2 hours before departure. If taking the coach, add its waiting time and the trip from your hotel to the bus station. A forest park exit is a separate starting point; finish the park visit and collect your bags before this transfer. For a Tianmen visit before your train, use the Tianmen Mountain departure-day plan.
At Chongqing East, take the Line 6 branch to 刘家坪, then change across the same platform to the main Line 6. For Jiefangbei, continue to 小什字 (Xiaoshizi), then walk or take a short ride to your hotel. Arrive the evening before your first full sightseeing day to follow the Chongqing three-day itinerary. For an arrival after metro service ends, take a taxi from the station to your hotel.
Book with your US passport
Use the official China Railway 12306 app or website. Sales open 15 days before departure, including the travel day. For example, tickets for 21 October go on sale on 7 October. You can also book Chongqing–Zhangjiajie train tickets through Klook.
- Select your date, direction and exact stations. Choose an assigned seat; 无座 means standing only.
- Enter your US passport number and name in the platform's document fields, matching your passport. Complete passport verification and pay.
- If online verification stays pending, take your physical passport to a staffed station ticket window.
- Save the issued train number, departure station, carriage and seat. Bring the physical passport linked to your ticket.
Board with luggage
Adults have a free carry-on allowance of 20 kg total; children have 10 kg. On high-speed trains, each bag's combined length, width and height must be within 130 cm, with each item weighing at most 20 kg. Folded strollers and wheelchairs do not count toward these limits.
Pass your bags through the security scanner at the station entrance. Use the racks at the end of the car for large suitcases and the overhead racks for smaller bags.
Find your train number and boarding gate (检票口) on the departure screens. Use the staffed lane marked 人工通道 for the passport check. When boarding opens, follow the signs to your platform.
Compare flying and road travel

The direct train makes rail the simplest choice between the two cities. Flying between Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG) and Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG) requires a connection at another airport.
A road trip suits a route with stops such as Wulong Karst. For a direct journey, the train saves several hours and avoids road traffic.
Practical tips
- Time zone: All trains run on Beijing Time (UTC+8). When booking hotel pickups, share the arrival time printed on your ticket.
- Hotel addresses: Save your hotel's Chinese name and full street address on your phone. A generic search for Zhangjiajie in a map app may pull up downtown Yongding instead of Wulingyuan.
- Bus payment: Have 2 yuan (≈ USD 0.30 ≈ USD 0.30) in small change or local transit QR codes ready for city bus 17. Buy tickets for the Wulingyuan scenic coach at the coach station ticket desk.
