Zhangjiajie City Transport: Railway Station, Hotels, and Wulingyuan

Getting from Zhangjiajie Railway Station to your hotel or out to Wulingyuan is straightforward once you know which vehicle to pick. Whether you want a quick walk to Tianmen cableway, an inexpensive CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ) coach, or a direct ride to your hotel door, here is how to make the trip without moving your bags twice.

Start with the station on your ticket

张家界站 (Zhangjiajie Station) is the central city railway station on 官黎路 (Guanli Road). The separate high-speed terminal in the north is 张家界西站 (Zhangjiajie West Station). Check your train ticket before arriving so you know which hub you are using. You can check the Zhangjiajie Station map to get your bearings.

A hotel in 永定区 (Yongding District) can sit right outside the station square, near the Tianmen cable car base, or across the river in the older city center. 武陵源 (Wulingyuan) is a separate mountain base town located about 30 km to the north.

Leave the station and choose your last leg

Follow the 出口 (Exit) signs from the platform to the station square. For a metered cab, follow the 出租车 signs to the official taxi queue. For ride-hailing in DiDi, walk to the pickup point selected in your app. For a private pickup, meet your driver at the agreed spot outside the exit.

If you plan to walk, enter the hotel's exact street address in your map. Hotels advertising Tianmen Mountain can sit on several different streets. Use the cable car station as an area landmark, but navigate directly to your specific building entrance.

From Zhangjiajie Station to city hotels

Walk toward Tianmen and the nearby hotels

From the forecourt, walk north along 官黎路 (Guanli Road) toward 大庸路 (Dayong Road) and 天门山索道下站 (Tianmen Mountain Lower Cable Car Station). The roughly 1.2 km walk takes about 20 minutes. Add a few extra minutes for your hotel's specific doorway.

If your hotel is right beside the station, walk straight to its entrance. If you booked near the city cable car station, continue north along the main street. Keep in mind that the mountain highway entrance, 天门山山门, is a separate southern gate outside the city.

Bus 17 for Tianmen, bus 6 for the older center

At the station's bus hub (火车站), take Bus 17 (17路) toward 高铁枢纽站 for Tianmen. Get off at 武陵山珍馆站, then walk about 230 meters east to the cable car station on Dayong Road. Onboard announcements may call this stop 天门山索道. The fare is CNY 2 (≈ USD 0.30 ) per person.

For hotels north of the river, take Bus 6 (6路) from 火车站 toward 高铁枢纽站. It runs through 官黎坪, 观音大桥南, and 烈士公园 into the older city center. Get off at the stop closest to your hotel instead of riding all the way to the West Station terminus.

A city road adjustment routes the outward bus through 古庸东路、文昌阁、大庸府城、新峰市场、龙城街. The return route toward the station uses 岩塔、龙城街、苏维埃纪念馆, then continues to 烈士公园、观音大桥南、火车站.

You can track live arrivals in the 掌上公交 app by selecting 张家界 and searching for line 6 or 17. For the short hop to Tianmen, walking directly is often faster than waiting for bus 17.

Taxi, DiDi or a booked pickup

A taxi or ride-hailing car from Zhangjiajie Station to the Tianmen cable car area takes about 5 to 10 minutes in normal traffic. Give the driver your hotel's full Chinese name and address so they drop you at the correct entrance.

City taxis use meters. The base fare for the first 1.6 km is CNY 6 (≈ USD 0.90 ) by day and CNY 7 (≈ USD 1.0 ) at night, with metered distance added after that. DiDi displays the upfront price for your selected vehicle in the app.

If you travel with a family group and multiple bags, reserving a station pickup service keeps everyone together. City vehicle pickup rates run around CNY 119 to 176 (≈ USD 18–26 ) per car. For nearby station hotels, walking or taking a street taxi is cheaper.

From city hotels and Zhangjiajie Station to Wulingyuan

Choose a coach or a direct hotel ride

Take the coach if you travel light and want to keep costs low. The bus runs from Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station straight to Wulingyuan town. Tickets cost CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ) per person, one way. Add the short ride from your city hotel to the bus station and your final connection in Wulingyuan.

Take a direct taxi or ride-hailing car if you have heavy luggage, travel with family, or arrive late. The drive takes 40 to 50 minutes and costs about CNY 90 to 100 (≈ USD 13–15 ) per car between the Tianmen area and Wulingyuan East Gate. DiDi will show the exact fare for your route before you confirm.

To skip station transfers entirely, booking a private transfer to your Wulingyuan hotel takes you straight between hotel doors for around CNY 179 (≈ USD 27 ) per vehicle.

Find your city or railway station boarding point

When leaving Zhangjiajie Railway Station, walk across the station square toward Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station (张家界中心汽车站) on the western side. The walk takes about 5 to 10 minutes with luggage.

At the ticket counter, ask for a ticket to 武陵源汽车站 (Wulingyuan Bus Station). Show the staff: 这班车到武陵源汽车站吗？ ("Does this bus go to Wulingyuan Bus Station?"). Proceed to the assigned boarding gate. The city-scenic minibuses (城景巴士) carry suitcases in the rear or beside seats.

Always check the front window sign before boarding. Buses marked 武陵源 head to Wulingyuan town near the park East Gate. Buses marked 森林公园 head to the park South Gate.

If you stay at a downtown hotel, head to 张家界中心汽车站 on Guanli Road near the classic train station. High-speed train arrivals at Zhangjiajie West Station use separate buses from that northern hub.

You can also board the city-scenic coach at marked roadside stops, such as the Tianmen lower cable car base or Tianmen Central bus stop (天门中心). If a passing bus is full, you may need to wait for the next one.

Board the service to Wulingyuan town

Ask for 武陵源汽车客运站 (Wulingyuan Bus Station) at the counter and board at your assigned bay. Some regional services collect the CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ) fare directly upon boarding.

The coach road trip takes about 50 to 60 minutes. Buses run throughout the day and into early evening. Budget about 90 minutes total for your hotel move, including waiting time and local connections.

Confirm that your bus is bound for Wulingyuan town. If your hotel is near the South Gate, board the bus marked 森林公园门票站 (Forest Park Ticket Station) instead. For town hotels, stay on the bus until it reaches the main terminal.

The main town bus terminal is 武陵源汽车客运站 near Weiyang Road (未央路) and Guihua Road (桂花路). The National Forest Park East Gate (武陵源东门 / 标志门) sits about 1.2 km farther west. Take a car from the railway station to your hotel

A direct taxi or DiDi ride is the easiest way to travel if you arrive in the evening or carry multiple rolling suitcases. The drive takes 40 to 50 minutes and typically costs CNY 50 to 80 (≈ USD 7.5–12 ) per car from the station area.

Follow the station forecourt's 出租车 signs for official metered taxis. For ride-hailing apps, meet your driver at the pickup pin shown on your screen. You can also book a station-to-Wulingyuan car transfer starting around CNY 179 to 262 (≈ USD 27–39 ) per vehicle.

Finish at your hotel and put down your bags

If your hotel is near the Wulingyuan bus terminal, walk there directly after getting off. Copy the hotel's Chinese name and address into your map app for walking directions.

For hotels closer to the East Gate, use the East Gate map point to navigate. Walking through town is easy with a light backpack, but taking a local taxi is much smoother with heavy suitcases. Local Wulingyuan city buses 1 and 2 also connect the bus station to the East Gate for CNY 2 (≈ USD 0.30 ) per person.

Drop your luggage at your Wulingyuan hotel front desk before entering the park. If your room is not ready, hotels will gladly store bags at reception. Return to a city hotel or the Tianmen area

When returning from Wulingyuan to downtown Zhangjiajie, head to Wulingyuan Bus Station and buy a ticket for 张家界中心汽车站 (Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station). After arriving at the downtown terminal, finish your journey to your city hotel or the Tianmen cableway on foot or by local taxi.

Note that some buses from Wulingyuan go to 张家界西站 (Zhangjiajie West Station) instead. Make sure to specify the Central Bus Station (中心汽车站) if your hotel is downtown.

Collect any luggage held at your Wulingyuan hotel before leaving. A direct taxi or DiDi ride can pick you up at your hotel entrance and drop you right at your downtown hotel door, which is especially convenient in the evening.

Return to Zhangjiajie Station

City hotels

When heading back to the classic railway station, set 张家界站 (Zhangjiajie Station) as your destination and choose 进站口 (Station Entrance) for your drop-off. Double-check your ticket so you do not confuse it with Zhangjiajie West Station (张家界西站).

From the Tianmen area, walk along Guanli Road or hail a quick taxi. For Bus 17, catch the service heading toward 火车站. In the older center, take Bus 6 toward 火车站 from the nearest return stop. At the station square, follow the 进站 signs to the main security hall.

Arrive at the station entrance 45 to 60 minutes before departure. This gives you plenty of time for identity verification, luggage security, and finding your boarding gate. Present the original US passport used for your booking.

Wulingyuan hotels

For your return train from Zhangjiajie Station, go to 武陵源汽车客运站 and buy a ticket to 张家界中心汽车站. Once the bus arrives at the central terminal, walk across the plaza to the train station departures hall.

Allow about 2.5 hours total from leaving your Wulingyuan hotel to your train departure time when taking the coach. Aim to reach the railway station about one hour before departure.

For example, for a 14:00 train departure, plan to arrive at Zhangjiajie Station by 13:00. Leave your Wulingyuan town hotel around 11:30 by coach, or around 12:00 by direct taxi. Add extra buffer time if your hotel is outside the town center or during holiday traffic.

Practical tips

• Show your hotel address in Chinese: Save your hotel's Chinese name and address on your phone. Show the driver: 请送我到这家酒店。 ("Please take me to this hotel.")
• Check the last coach departure: In late afternoon, verify the schedule at the counter: 今天到武陵源汽车站的末班车几点？ ("What time is the last bus to Wulingyuan today?"). On your return trip, ask for 张家界中心汽车站.
• Payment methods: Carry small cash notes for local buses (CNY 2 (≈ USD 0.30 )), or use the transport code in Alipay or WeChat Pay. Coach counters accept digital pay and cash.
