With one extra day and night, choose Furong for waterfall lights and an unhurried visit away from loud bars. Its compact old street and short 25-minute train ride leave more time in town. Choose Fenghuang when river walks and historic bridges matter more; give each town a night if you want to enjoy both after dark.
Match your spare time to each town
One extra day and returning to Zhangjiajie: Choose Furong Town. Plan 3–4 hours inside the scenic area, plus local road transfers to and from the train station. You get to explore the historic stone street and waterfall trails without moving your luggage to a new hotel.
One day and one night: Pick Furong. Arrive in the afternoon, wander the stone lanes and waterfall trails in daylight, and stay for the illuminated waterfall in the evening. The short train trip leaves more time to enjoy your evening.
Two days and one night, trying to fit both: Touring Furong by day and sleeping in Fenghuang makes a rushed trip. Station transfers, luggage handling, and train schedules cut into your sightseeing time, leaving only the evening for Fenghuang. For a relaxed trip with one overnight stay, stick to one town.
Two nights: Spend one night in each town. Arrive in Furong during the afternoon, head to Fenghuang the next day, and explore the riverfront the following morning. This is the best itinerary if you want to experience both night scenes.
| Your main interest | Pick Furong | Pick Fenghuang |
|---|---|---|
| Landscape | Waterfall below cliffside wooden homes | Riverbanks, bridges, and houses on stilts |
| Pace | Compact visit centered on one landmark | Longer walks with quiet lanes and cafes |
| Evening | Lit waterfall and cliff paths | River reflections, shops, and lively music bars |
| Walking | Shorter routes with steep waterfall stairs | Longer riverside walks that are easy to shorten |
| Budget | Scenic area requires admission | Free public streets and river walkways |
Furong: waterfall views and a compact stop

Furong Town (芙蓉镇) sits above a massive waterfall, with traditional wooden houses perched right on the cliff edge. The old stone street leads down toward the main viewpoints and routes behind the falls. The contrast between looking across the gorge from above and standing right under the cascade makes it special. Keep in mind that climbing down and back up involves steep stone steps.
Arrive in the afternoon to catch daylight photos and evening waterfall lights in the same visit. Stay overnight if night photography is your main goal. Booking a room near the main town entrance saves you from dragging heavy luggage down stone steps. Booking directly above the waterfall gives you the view and sound of falling water right outside your window.
Formerly named Wangcun, the town became famous through the classic Chinese movie Furong Town. Its Tujia architecture, stilt houses, and narrow alleys offer plenty to see between waterfall viewpoints. Be sure to try rice tofu (米豆腐), a popular local snack sold along the stone street.
Use the Furong Town guide to plan your walking route and old street visit.
Fenghuang: river walks and evening lights

Fenghuang Ancient Town (凤凰古城) stretches along the banks of the Tuojiang River (沱江). Iconic bridges such as Hongqiao (虹桥), wooden stilt houses over the water, stepping stones, and narrow side alleys offer endless spots to explore. Fenghuang is ideal if you enjoy wandering riverside promenades rather than visiting a single waterfall landmark.
Arrive with enough daylight for an afternoon river stroll, enjoy dinner at a local riverside restaurant, and return to the water as the historic bridges and stilt houses light up. Set aside the next morning for quiet flagstone lanes before catching your train. That peaceful early morning atmosphere is one of the best reasons to stay overnight.
The central riverfront features lively bars and busy pedestrian paths. Book a room in a quiet side alley or away from the core bar strip if you want uninterrupted sleep. Choose a riverfront balcony room if water reflections and vibrant night scenery matter more to you.
Compare the walks and physical effort
Furong concentrates its sights in a compact area, but the main waterfall trail requires climbing down and up steep stairs. The path behind the falls can also have wet paving and water spray. Choose Furong if your group is ready for stair climbing to see the waterfall up close.
In Fenghuang, you can stroll along flat riverbanks at your own pace, sit down at a cafe, and turn back whenever you like. You can cross the river using paved bridges instead of stepping stones if stairs or narrow crossings are difficult for anyone in your group. For an easier walk after hiking in Zhangjiajie's mountains, Fenghuang gives you much more control over your route and distance.
Train travel and station transfers
High-speed trains depart from Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站). Furong Town station (芙蓉镇站) serves the waterfall town, while Fenghuang Gucheng station (凤凰古城站) serves Fenghuang. Both stations require a short local ride to reach the historic scenic areas.
Direct high-speed rail travel takes about 25 minutes from Zhangjiajie to Furong, about one hour to Fenghuang, and about 30–40 minutes between the two towns. Remember to factor in travel time to Zhangjiajie West station, ticket checks with your passport, and local transfers with luggage on arrival.
At Furong, take a local taxi or shuttle bus from the station to the scenic area entrance. At Fenghuang, take a taxi or the sightseeing maglev train toward the old town. Lansheng station (揽胜站) on the maglev line connects directly via a covered walkway and sightseeing elevator to the historic river area. A single maglev ride costs 28元 (≈ USD 4.2 ≈ USD 4.2) per person.
For a day trip, book your return train ticket in advance so you know how much sightseeing time you have. For an overnight stay, pick a departure time that lets you enjoy the peaceful morning hours.
Admission tickets and costs
Furong Town scenic area admission costs 108元 (≈ USD 16 ≈ USD 16) per adult. This is the main sightseeing expense when visiting the waterfall town; meals, lodging, and transport are separate.
Fenghuang's public streets, historic bridges, and riverbanks are completely free to enter without an admission ticket. Specific historic halls, museum residences, and river boat rides require separate tickets. If you simply want to stroll along the river and admire the night lights, you can do so without buying any sightseeing package.
Visit both when the nights are part of the trip
When traveling from Zhangjiajie, the most practical route order is Zhangjiajie to Furong, then Furong to Fenghuang. You can also run the route in reverse if that fits your onward travel toward Changsha, Guilin, or Guiyang.
To experience both towns at night without rushing, spend one night in Furong and the next night in Fenghuang. If you only have one night total, visit Furong in the afternoon, sleep there for the night waterfall view, and explore the old street the next morning.
For details on connecting between the two stops, see Furong to Fenghuang by train for station transfers and luggage tips.
Practical tips for your visit
Leave large suitcases at your hotel while exploring. If you are making a quick day stop in Furong between trains, use luggage storage at the train station or an entrance shop rather than dragging bags down the waterfall stone steps. Choose an entrance-area hotel if traveling light is more important than waking up to a waterfall view.
Plan your arrival around sunset rather than an exact lighting schedule. Arriving in the mid-afternoon gives you plenty of daylight to find viewpoints and orient yourself. In Fenghuang, use the early morning after your stay to photograph the mist and empty bridges before day-trippers arrive.
