Plan two relaxed days in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park based in Wulingyuan: one flat valley morning and one upper-viewpoint day linked by enclosed cable cars and elevators. Save Tianmen Mountain for an extra day if older children want dramatic cliff paths.

Choose days around your child's pace

Give the forest park two separate days and keep arrival day light. Stay in Wulingyuan (武陵源) for quick gate access. Add a night in downtown Zhangjiajie only if Tianmen Mountain (天门山) fits your family's schedule.

Use your child's walking habits as a guide rather than strict age brackets. A preschooler used to walking may do fine on viewpoints, while an older child might need an easy morning.

Child's routine A practical plan Where to shorten it
Babies and toddlers (roughly 0-2) One short, flat valley outing; back to the hotel by early afternoon Turn around along the same valley trail whenever naps require it
Preschoolers (roughly 3-5) Ten-Mile Gallery train or a short Golden Whip Stream stroll Explore one valley, then head outside the park gate for lunch
School-age children (roughly 6-11) One day for upper viewpoints and one day for valley streams Wrap up the upper route right after Yuanjiajie if energy dips
Older kids (roughly 12 and up) Both mountain viewpoints and valley hikes, with Tianmen on another day Pick one extra viewpoint together instead of trying to see every plateau

If a quiet room nap is essential, pick a valley morning. Upper mountain plateaus require several bus transfers, elevator lines, and walking trails, making them an all-day commitment.

Flat valley trails with easy turnarounds

Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪) gives children running water, shade trees, and views looking up at the sandstone pillars. Enter at the South Gate, also called the Forest Park Gate (森林公园门票站), beside the Great Oxygen Bar Square (大氧吧广场). Walk along the paved stream path for 30 to 45 minutes, then turn around and return the same way. This gives young children an easy outing with an immediate exit.

Stay on the main valley floor. The side trail climbing toward Yuanjiajie (袁家界) involves hundreds of steep stone stairs. Watch for small fish in the shallows and look up at the rock formations. Keep all snacks and drinks packed inside closed backpacks, as wild macaques along the path look for loose food bags.

If your hotel is closer to the East Gate (吴家峪门票站), take the internal park shuttle bus to Water Surrounds Four Gates (水绕四门). Walk upstream beside Golden Whip Stream and walk back to the same bus stop. Sticking to one gate each day keeps transportation simple.

Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊) is a great choice for children who love small trains. Enter through the East Gate and take the park bus to the gallery stop. Spot rock shapes like the Old Man Gathering Herbs (采药老人) and the Three Sisters Peaks (三姐妹峰). The mini train costs 38 yuan (≈ USD 5.7 ) per adult one way or 76 yuan (≈ USD 11 ) round trip. Taking the train both ways saves tired legs; a one-way train ride followed by an easy walk back suits kids who want to stretch their legs.

For a nap schedule, choose either the creek or the mini train. Return to Wulingyuan town for lunch and rest. Families with more energy can connect the gallery and Water Surrounds Four Gates by park bus, add a short stream walk, and leave through the East Gate.

Upper mountain views without the climb

Use Bailong Elevator and the cable cars for the elevation gains, keeping your family's walking energy for the viewpoint paths.

  1. Enter at the East Gate and take the park bus to Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯).
  2. Ride the glass elevator up the cliff face, then board the upper shuttle bus to Yuanjiajie.
  3. Explore Enchanting Terrace (迷魂台), the floating-mountain pillar from Avatar, and the First Bridge Under Heaven (天下第一桥). Stop for lunch before heading to another area.
  4. If the children still have energy, ride the upper shuttle toward Tianzi Mountain (天子山). Check out the viewpoints near Helong Park (贺龙公园), including Imperial Brush Peaks (御笔峰).
  5. Ride the Tianzi Mountain Cableway down, then take the valley shuttle bus back to the East Gate.

Bailong Elevator costs 65 yuan (≈ USD 9.7 ) per adult one way. The Tianzi cable car costs 72 yuan (≈ USD 11 ) per adult one way. Together, these two scenic rides cost 137 yuan (≈ USD 21 ) per adult, separate from park admission. Both rides are fully enclosed, though viewpoint paths still include outdoor steps.

If young kids only care about seeing the Avatar rocks, ride Bailong Elevator both up and down instead of riding the bus all the way to Tianzi Mountain. Round-trip elevator tickets cost 130 yuan (≈ USD 19 ) per adult. That leaves plenty of time for an easy bus ride down and an early dinner in Wulingyuan.

The two-day forest park route details all shuttle transfers. Keep upper plateau walks and valley paths on separate days when traveling with kids.

Deciding on Tianmen Mountain

Consider Tianmen Mountain if your child enjoys dramatic cliff walks and wants to see the giant natural cave arch. Treat it as a separate day trip starting from downtown Zhangjiajie. Families with toddlers who need regular hotel naps will find the forest park valley paths far more practical.

Take the lower escalators from Tianmen Cave Square (天门洞广场) up to the cave opening instead of climbing the 999 open-air stairs. The upward escalator ride costs 32 yuan (≈ USD 4.8 ) per adult. A separate seven-section upper escalator links the cave mouth to the summit paths. Walk a short section of the summit trail and turn back; the glass skywalks are optional, as the solid concrete walkways offer the same sweeping cliff views.

Route C is the primary operating option. Board the free shuttle bus from the city lower station (天门山索道下站) to the mountain gate (天门山国家森林公园-山门), or take a short taxi ride directly to the gate. Ride the Cave Express Cableway up to the cave square. Take the lower escalator or the 999 steps up to the cave opening, then ride the upper escalators to the summit loop. Return via the same route back to the mountain gate to catch a cab or the return city shuttle. Review the Tianmen ticket routes for complete transit details.

Skip the summit open-air chairlift when traveling with children to reduce transfers. Keep in mind that moving between the main cableway, escalators, and trails requires walking time and patience in lines.

Child ticket rules and ID requirements

In Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, children under 14 enter free and ride internal park shuttle buses free under Hunan provincial concession rules. Children aged 14 to under 18 qualify for half-price admission. Present your child's valid US passport at the ticket counter to verify age.

Adult admission alone costs 165 yuan (≈ USD 25 ) and covers four consecutive days, but it excludes internal buses. Admission bundled with the park shuttle bus network costs 236 yuan (≈ USD 35 ) per adult. Bailong Elevator, cableways, and the Ten-Mile Gallery train require individual tickets. Compare all options in our forest park ticket guide.

At Tianmen Mountain, children under 14 also receive free scenic admission and internal transport. Pick up your child's named paper ticket at the scenic ticket office on your visit morning. Bring the child's US passport, your own passport, and your booking confirmation. Each ticketed adult may bring up to two free children under 14. Shoe covers for the glass skywalks cost extra on site.

For high-speed train travel to Zhangjiajie, children aged 6 to under 14 need a discounted child ticket; travelers 14 and older require an adult ticket. One child under 6 travels free without an assigned seat when accompanied by a ticketed adult. Add the child to your train booking under their US passport number. Purchase a child ticket if an under-6 child needs their own seat, or if one adult travels with more than one child under 6.

Family-friendly rooms and where to stay

Base your family in Wulingyuan for your forest park days. It gives you a quick base for lunch breaks and afternoon naps between valley walks. Move to downtown Zhangjiajie for your Tianmen Mountain day or before catching an early train or flight. Our area guide compares both neighborhoods.

For families needing multiple beds, Hilton Garden Inn Zhangjiajie Wulingyuan (张家界武陵源希尔顿花园酒店, 宝峰路108号) offers connecting room configurations and baby cribs. It provides a comfortable, familiar setup in Wulingyuan when bed layouts matter more than being right at the East Gate.

Enter all adults and exact child ages when searching for lodging. Always double-check bed sizes and maximum occupancy, as a room labeled family room may only have a single king bed. Look for useful room types: 家庭房 (family room), 亲子房 (parent-and-child room), 双床房 (twin room with two beds), and 婴儿床 (baby crib). Booking connecting rooms works well when young children go to sleep earlier than parents.

Practical tips for meals, strollers, and pacing

  • Have a good breakfast before heading into the park. Pick up fruit, snacks, and water near your hotel before valley walks. Upper mountain plateaus have food stalls and dining near Yuanjiajie and Helong Park, so eat before boarding the next shuttle.
  • Order plain rice (米饭), steamed egg custard (蒸蛋), or mild noodle soup. Show restaurant staff this exact note: 请不要放辣椒,也不要放辣椒油 (Please do not add chili or chili oil). Asking for 少辣 (less spicy) still often results in spicy Hunan chili. Note any food allergies separately. If your child needs mild food or has food allergies, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to show staff before ordering.
  • Schedule meals ahead of your child's usual tired hours. On short valley days, finish by noon, eat near the gate, and head back to the room. On upper mountain days, sit down for a real lunch before deciding whether to continue to Tianzi Mountain.
  • A soft baby carrier works best for toddlers on mountain viewpoints with stone steps. Bring a lightweight stroller that folds up quickly for boarding shuttle buses. Keep stroller outings to flat valley trails like Golden Whip Stream.
  • Book a direct taxi or private transfer between the airport or high-speed rail station and your Wulingyuan hotel so you can skip bus transfers with luggage. If you need a child safety seat, request one matching your child's height and weight when reserving the vehicle.
  • Plan evening cultural shows only on days when children still have energy after dinner. Keep your arrival evening and the night after hiking the upper plateaus clear for an early bedtime.
