Three days in Zhangjiajie: peaks, Golden Whip Stream, and Tianmen

Spend two days in the forest park and one at Tianmen Mountain. Stay in the same East Gate hotel after both forest days. On day three, check out, travel downtown, and store your bags before visiting Tianmen.

Give the peaks, stream, and Tianmen a day each

If you come from Chongqing, arrive the day before the first sightseeing day. Direct trains from Chongqing East (重庆东站) to Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站) take about 2–3 hours. This is the train ride; add your station and hotel transfers. Continue from West Station to your East Gate hotel in Wulingyuan that evening. The first two days show the pillars from above and below. Allow about 13 to 17 km of walking across those two days, including viewpoints and bus stops. Allow about 6 to 8 km on the mountain ridge day and 7 to 9 km on the stream day. The full stream day has fewer stairs and a longer continuous walk. Book your hotel and the right tickets

Choose one Wulingyuan hotel near the East Gate (吴家峪门票站) for the nights after day one and day two. Both park days finish at the East Gate, so your suitcases stay in your room. If you arrive the evening before day one, add that night at the same hotel. Check out on day three.

Travel downtown on the morning of day three with your suitcases. A direct car takes about 40 to 50 minutes; expect around CNY 90 to 100 (≈ USD 13–15 ) per car between the East Gate and the Tianmen area. The coach links Wulingyuan Bus Station (武陵源汽车客运站) and Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station (张家界中心汽车站) for CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ) per person, taking 50 to 60 minutes. Allow about 90 minutes between hotels by coach, plus bag storage before entry. If your train or flight leaves too early for this morning transfer and Tianmen, visit Tianmen first or move downtown after day two. A city hotel after Tianmen suits a next-day departure.

Buy the forest park ticket for CNY 236 (≈ USD 35 ) per adult, which includes internal park shuttles. It lasts four consecutive calendar days from the booked first visit. Reserve the East Gate on day one and South Gate on day two, including each entry date and time slot. Repeat entry also needs a reservation. In the WeChat mini program (张家界旅游小助手), open ticket changes and reservations (门票改签、预约), then repeat entry reservation (再次入园预约) to choose the second day's gate and slot. For Tianmen, book the combined ticket for CNY 285 (≈ USD 43 ) per adult. Select your visit date, the active route, and a morning entry slot. Enter your passport name and number. Day one: Tianzi viewpoints and Yuanjiajie's pillars

Plan for about 08:00 to 16:00 inside the park on day one for bus rides, walking, and lunch.

1. Enter at East Gate (吴家峪门票站 / 东门). Take the free internal shuttle to Tianzi Cableway Lower Station (天子山索道下站).
2. Ride the Tianzi cable car up, then take the connecting shuttle to Helong Park (贺龙公园). Walk the viewpoint paths around Imperial Brush Peak (御笔峰) and Fairy Presenting Flowers (仙女散花). Spend about 1.5 to 2 hours here.
3. Grab lunch in the Helong Park area before heading to the afternoon shuttle stop.
4. From the Helong Park parking area, take the upper mountain bus to the Yangjiajie stop (杨家界停车场). Transfer here to the bus for First Bridge under Heaven (天下第一桥停车场) in Yuanjiajie. Allow about one hour for rides and wait times.
5. Walk along the cliffside paths from First Bridge under Heaven past Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (哈利路亚山 / 乾坤柱) to Enchanting Terrace (迷魂台). Allow about two hours.
6. From the Mihuntai stop, take the shuttle to Bailong Elevator Upper Station (百龙天梯上站). Ride the elevator down, then catch the lower shuttle back to the East Gate.

Return to the same Wulingyuan hotel after your first forest day.

Day two: Golden Whip Stream and another night in Wulingyuan

Leave your luggage in your hotel room. Walk or take a short taxi to Wulingyuan Bus Station (武陵源汽车站) and board the local bus to the South Gate (森林公园门票站). The fare is CNY 8 (≈ USD 1.2 ) per person, and the ride takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Enter with your second-day reservation. Walk through Oxygen Bar Square (大氧吧广场) to Laomowan (老磨湾), then follow the flat trail east along Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪) toward Four Streams Gate (水绕四门). The valley path covers about 5.7 km. Allow 3 to 4 hours for an easy walk with photo stops among the tall sandstone cliffs.

Pass Golden Whip Rock (金鞭岩), Purple Grass Pool (紫草潭), and Meeting from Afar (千里相会). When you see the steep staircase heading uphill at Luancuanpo (乱窜坡), stay on the flat paved trail along the water. At Four Streams Gate, board the free park shuttle directly back to the East Gate (吴家峪门票站).

Return to your hotel for your second night. Your bags are already there, saving you an extra move.

Day three: Heaven's Gate and the summit

Check out and take your suitcases downtown before Tianmen. If staying in the city afterward, arrange storage at that hotel's front desk. For a same-day departure, use a luggage storage point near the city lower station (天门山索道下站). The luggage guide gives specific storage locations. Choose your entry slot after allowing for the morning transfer and bag drop. Allow 4 to 6 hours inside Tianmen, then plan your mountain return, bag collection, and ride to the station or airport separately.

Only Route C operates from 13 October 2026. Take the free shuttle from 天门山索道下站, the city lower station, to 天门山国家森林公园-山门, the mountain gate. Ride the Cave Express Cableway to the cave square, reach Heaven’s Gate by the 999 steps or lower escalators, then take the seven upper escalators to the summit. Return by the same chain to the mountain gate, then take the city shuttle or a taxi. The main city cableway is closed for rebuilding.

At the cave square, choose the 999 steps or the lower escalator to the cave opening. The lower escalator uphill costs CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ) per person; downhill is free during the current route adjustment. The seven upper escalators between the cave and summit are included in the combined ticket.

Choose the summit's West Line for the Guigu cliff path (鬼谷栈道) and open rock-face views. For a longer summit walk, continue towards Cherry Valley (樱桃湾) and Tianmen Mountain Temple (天门山寺). Add the short glass walkway if you want; shoe covers cost CNY 5 (≈ USD 0.75 ) per person. East and West describe summit walks, separate from the ticket's A or C transport route. For an evening departure, follow the Tianmen departure-day plan and allow separate time for the mountain descent, collecting luggage, and reaching your terminal.

For an evening train to Chongqing, book an early Tianmen entry. After descending to the mountain gate, take the shuttle back to the city, collect your bags, then travel to Zhangjiajie West Station (张家界西站). To keep the full mountain day, stay downtown afterward and take the train the next morning.

Swap a day for the glass bridge, or reverse the bases

Choose the glass bridge instead of Golden Whip Stream if the high crossing matters more than a second park day. Keep Tianzi and Yuanjiajie on day one. On day two, visit the Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge from Wulingyuan and return to the same hotel for the night. Tianmen's short cliff walkway is a separate attraction.

Route B combines the bridge and canyon. Allow 3 to 4 hours inside, plus travel time. The local bus costs CNY 15 (≈ USD 2.2 ) per person each way and takes around 40 minutes. Start at the upper visitor center, cross the bridge, descend into the canyon, and finish after the boat ride on Shenquan Lake (神泉湖) at the lower exit. Choose a shorter stream walk to reduce walking on day two. Reserve the East Gate, take the valley shuttle to Four Streams Gate (水绕四门), walk along Golden Whip Stream for about 30 minutes, and turn back. Return to the East Gate and your hotel. This uses your existing park ticket and skips the CNY 8 (≈ USD 1.2 ) South Gate coach.

Visit Tianmen first when your departure train or flight leaves too little time for a day-three morning transfer and mountain visit. On day one, store bags downtown or near Tianmen, visit the mountain, collect bags, and travel to Wulingyuan. Keep the two forest days together as days two and three. Book your park ticket and daily gates in that order. Storing bags at Zhangjiajie West Station (张家界西站) before Tianmen and then traveling to Wulingyuan requires a return trip to West Station for pickup. Storing bags near Tianmen keeps pickup directly on your route to Wulingyuan.

Use the clearer forest day for the summit viewpoints. The valley stream day gives good views of water and cliffs when low clouds hide the peaks. Swap those two days and their gate reservations while keeping both nights at your East Gate hotel.

Cost and practical tips

The main plan's forest park ticket, Tianzi ascent, Bailong descent, and Tianmen combined ticket total CNY 658 (≈ USD 98 ) per adult. Adding the South Gate coach brings the total to CNY 666 (≈ USD 100 ) per adult. Hotels, meals, base transfers, and optional Tianmen escalator fees are separate.

• Keep your physical passport in your day bag when your main luggage stays at reception.
• Along Golden Whip Stream, wild macaques look for food. Keep all snacks zipped inside your backpack and eat only at designated rest areas.
• At your city luggage storage point on day three, ask staff for the closing time: 今天最晚几点取行李？ (What is the latest time to collect luggage today?). Use that time to plan your mountain descent.

Continue beyond these three sightseeing days to Furong Town or Fenghuang Ancient Town. Use the combined itinerary to add the trains and overnight stops.
