You can see Tianmen Cave and the mountain summit without climbing the famous 999 steps. Two escalator systems inside the mountain do the heavy lifting for you. You can choose a quick cave visit, a short out-and-back summit walk, or a scenic cliff loop based on how much walking you want to do.
Choose the route your legs can finish
Cave only: this is the shortest option. You admire the massive stone arch from the square below, ride the escalators up inside the cliff to stand directly in the opening, and take them right back down. It is ideal if you want zero summit hiking.
Short summit visit: pick this route to look straight down through the natural arch without committing to miles of trails. Ride the upper escalators to the top, walk a flat trail to the north viewpoint, and retrace your steps.
West Line with chairlift: choose this loop for dramatic cliff views if you can handle about an hour of steady walking on paved paths. The Guigu cliff path spans 1,600 meters, but an open-air forest chairlift saves your knees from climbing back across the mountain.
Connecting paths between cable cars and escalators still have gentle inclines and brief sets of steps. Escalator transfers require standing, so take advantage of benches and restaurants when your legs need a break.
Reach the cave square and return to the city
Start at the city cableway lower station (天门山索道下站). For US passport holders, staff scan your physical passport directly at the turnstiles for ticket validation.
Route C operates between the city and the mountain. Take the free shuttle bus from the city station to the mountain gate (天门山国家森林公园-山门). Next, board the Cave Express Cableway (天门洞快线索道). From there, follow Fuyuan Path (福缘栈道) to the cave square. Expect about 10 minutes of gentle walking along this path in each direction.
The express cableway bypasses Tongtian Avenue (通天大道) entirely, skipping the mountain road's 99 sharp hairpin turns. This makes the trip comfortable if winding buses trigger motion sickness.
To head back down after your visit, walk across the square, follow Fuyuan Path to the express cableway, ride down to the mountain gate, and take the free shuttle back to the city.
The adult scenic package costs 285 yuan (≈ USD 43 ≈ USD 43) per person. You can book Tianmen Mountain tickets in advance for your visit.
Use the two escalator systems for different climbs

The famous 999-step staircase climbs steeply from Tianmen Cave Square (天门洞广场) to the cave arch. Two escalator systems let you avoid this strenuous climb entirely.
Lower escalators (登天门扶梯): five escalator segments run inside the rock between the square and the cave opening. Riding up costs 32 yuan (≈ USD 4.8 ≈ USD 4.8) per person, while riding down is free. Riding them in both directions bypasses all 999 steps.
Upper escalators (7级穿山自动扶梯): seven escalator segments connect the back of Tianmen Cave to the mountain summit. Both directions are included in your standard entry ticket. They exit near Tianmen Fanshui (天门翻水), the main junction for summit trails.
Follow one of the two short routes
Cave only: turn back at Heaven's Gate
- Arrive at Tianmen Cave Square and take photos of the arch from the open plaza.
- Ride the lower escalators up to the cave opening and look out over the valley from inside the arch.
- Take the lower escalators back down to the square, then board your return transit back to town.
This is the fastest visit because you skip the high summit trails completely.
Short summit: return by the same path
- Ride the lower escalators to the cave, walk behind the arch, and ride the upper escalators up to the summit.
- Exit at Tianmen Fanshui and follow the signs toward the north viewpoint overlooking the cave (北俯视天门).
- Enjoy the view looking straight down through the arch, then turn around and walk back along the same path. Keeping your outward walk to 15 minutes makes the return easy on your knees.
- Take the upper escalators down to the cave, take the lower escalators down to the square, and catch your transit back to the city.
Skip the separate Yuhu Peak loop (玉壶峰) to avoid steep extra steps.
Add the longer West Line and chairlift circuit
To view the high cliff trails, exit the upper escalators at Tianmen Fanshui. Follow these signs in order to join the West Line (西线): 高空云廊 → 珙桐园 → 吊索神峪 → 凌霄台.
At Gongtong Garden, continue straight toward Diaosuo Shenyu. Skip the side detour to Panlong Glass Walkway (盘龙崖玻璃栈道) to save steps.
The West Line Glass Walkway is optional and costs 5 yuan (≈ USD 0.75 ≈ USD 0.75) for shoe covers. You can walk the regular concrete walkway right beside it instead. Continue along the paved Guigu cliff path (鬼谷栈道) toward Cherry Bay (樱桃湾), crossing the suspension bridge along the way.
Rest at Cherry Bay before moving on. Skip the detour to Tianmen Mountain Temple (天门山寺) to protect your knees. From Cherry Bay, take the open-air forest chairlift up to Yunmeng Summit (云梦仙顶) for 25 yuan (≈ USD 3.7 ≈ USD 3.7) per person.
At the top, take the vertical elevator down to the station level. Walk back along the paved path to the upper escalators, descend through the cave to the square, and take your return transit down to the city.
Rest stops and a helpful phrase
Restrooms and drinks are available at Tianmen Cave Square before you head up. Tianmen Fanshui at the top of the upper escalators also has restrooms and cold drinks. On the West Line, Cherry Bay provides seated dining and restrooms before the chairlift ride.
To ask staff for the escalator entrance instead of the staircase, show this phrase on your phone:
- 我想坐扶梯,不走九百九十九级台阶。 (I want to take the escalators and skip the 999 steps.)
