Plan an afternoon or overnight visit to Furong Town (芙蓉镇) to see its two-tier waterfall, walk behind the falling water, and watch the cliffside wooden houses light up at dusk. A full walking loop through the covered bridge, waterfall path, and old flagstone streets takes 3 to 5 hours.

Choose an afternoon visit or one night

Furong Town sits above a two-tier waterfall in Yongshun County, overlooking the You River (酉水). Wooden Tujia houses line the cliff with covered balconies facing the gorge. The main highlights are seeing the waterfall and stilted buildings together, walking directly behind the cascade, and exploring the stone alleys.

For a day trip, arrive at the scenic entrance in the early afternoon. Walk the waterfall path in daylight when the steps are easy to see, stop for a local meal on the old street, and return to a main viewing terrace after dark to see the town lit up. Allow 3 to 5 hours in town, plus the short transfer to and from Furongzhen railway station. Check return high-speed train schedules before setting your evening departure.

Staying one night lets you enjoy the evening lights without rushing to catch a late train. You can also revisit Tuwang Bridge and the alleys the next morning for quiet daylight photos. This setup works well if you plan to continue south toward Fenghuang. If you only visit during daylight, budget about 3 hours for the core walking loop and a quick snack stop.

To decide whether to visit one town or both, compare Furong and Fenghuang.

Follow the bridge, waterfall and old-street loop

Start at the Furong Old Town Ticket Office (芙蓉镇票务中心). The high-speed rail station is outside town, so take a quick local taxi or bus ride to the ticket entrance.

  1. Enter near Baishou Hall (摆手堂), a central square used for traditional Tujia hand-waving dances. Pass Bronze Pillar Park (铜柱园) to see historic markers from the region's Tusi rulers.
  2. Cross Tuwang Bridge (土王桥), a covered wooden bridge with sweeping views of stilted houses along the stream.
  3. Walk along Tingtao Road (听涛路) toward the upper viewing terraces and the cliffside Tusi Palace (土王行宫).
  4. Walk down the stone steps to the waterfall. Follow the lower path cut into the rock directly behind the falling water, then continue along the riverside path toward old Wangcun dock (王村码头).
  5. Climb the stairs back up to Five-Li Stone Slab Street (五里石板街). This flagstone lane is lined with food stalls, craft workshops, and traditional wooden storefronts.
  6. Follow the upper lanes back toward the main entrance. If staying for the night, stop for dinner before heading back to the main viewing terrace across the gorge for night photos.

The old dock is a scenic stop along the loop, and the entire circuit can be completed on foot. Stepping stones (跳岩) cross the stream near the lower lanes as an optional scenic photo stop.

Upper viewpoints offer the classic panorama: wooden stilted houses perched on the cliff edge, water dropping over two rocky tiers, and the wide river canyon below. Take in this view in daylight to get your bearings.

The lower cliff path brings you directly behind the curtain of falling water. Spray reaches the walkway, so keep small electronics protected. After passing behind the cascade, follow the riverside trail toward the dock for low-angle views looking up at the illuminated cliffs.

For wide landscape photos, head to the public viewing terraces across the waterfall bay. For architectural shots, explore the covered bridge and flagstone alleys to capture carved wooden balconies and curved tile roofs.

Stay for the lights and Tujia culture

At dusk, amber lighting outlines the waterfall, cliff face, and wooden balconies. The main public terrace across the gorge offers the best angle to view the illuminated town against the dark hills.

Check the daily performance board at Baishou Hall near the entrance for scheduled Tujia music and hand-waving dance shows. Along the stone streets, local artisan shops sell Tujia brocade weaving, silver ornaments, and indigo-dyed fabrics.

The town was historically called Wangcun (王村). It was renamed Furong Town after the popular 1986 Chinese film Furong Town was filmed along these flagstone lanes. Several shops on the old street still highlight that heritage.

Buy admission at the entrance

Scenic admission is CNY 108 (≈ USD 16 ) per adult. The ticket includes access to the waterfall walkway, historic streets, and outdoor cultural performances. Tickets are valid for 3 consecutive days with repeat entry, which easily covers an afternoon walk, evening lights, and a morning revisit.

Purchase your ticket at the entrance ticket counter using your physical passport for real-name verification. Complete ticketing and ID verification at the service window before heading through the automated turnstiles. The scenic area phone number is +86 743 5811888.

Scenic admission is separate from hotel bookings. Factor this ticket price into your overall budget alongside train fares and lodging.

Try rice tofu on the old street

Rice tofu (米豆腐) is the classic local snack sold along Five-Li Stone Slab Street. Soft rice-flour cubes are served warm or cold in a seasoned broth topped with pickled vegetables, garlic, scallions, and chili sauce.

Zhengzong No. 113 Rice Tofu Shop (正宗113号米豆腐店) is a well-known stop tied to the town's film history, located at 芙蓉路永顺三和芙蓉酒店西南侧. A bowl costs about CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ) per person, making it an easy midday snack.

For dinner, choose an old-street restaurant serving Xiangxi cured pork (湘西腊肉) or braised river fish. A table on a cliffside balcony gives you views of the falls during your meal, while upper-street restaurants make your post-dinner walk back to the town gates shorter.

Choose your room and onward route

If you stay overnight, decide whether you prefer a cliffside view or easy luggage access. Rooms facing the gorge let you watch the lit waterfall directly from your balcony, though they require walking down stairs. Guesthouses near the upper entrance road make luggage handling and morning taxi pickups much simpler.

To reach Furong Town from Zhangjiajie, take the high-speed train from Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站) to Furongzhen station (芙蓉镇站), then catch a 10-minute taxi ride to the scenic gate. If continuing south, take the direct high-speed train from Furong Town to Fenghuang.

Practical tips for the cliffside walk

Leave rolling luggage at your hotel or an entrance luggage desk before walking down to the waterfall. The path descending to the falls and climbing back up to the old street consists of steep outdoor stone steps that are not suitable for suitcases or strollers. If you prefer to avoid steep climbs, focus on Tuwang Bridge and the upper viewing terraces.

Mist and water spray blow across the path directly behind the cascade. Put your phone in a pocket or waterproof pouch while walking through the tunnel, then take photos once you reach the open viewing decks.

If you prefer non-spicy food, tell staff 不辣 (not spicy) when ordering. Rice tofu gets its heat from added chili oil and pickled peppers, so ask for toppings without chili if needed.

If you have several food preferences or dietary needs, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to show staff before ordering.
