For a relaxed first visit, spend three days in the forest park and one at Tianmen Mountain. Separate Tianzi Mountain and Yuanjiajie to save energy, walk Golden Whip Stream on day three before moving to the city, and keep Tianmen for day four. If you prefer a slower pace, combine the high viewpoints into one day and use day three for a quiet city rest day. You can also pick the Grand Canyon if you want to walk the glass bridge.
Four complete days and one hotel move
This plan starts with a full morning in Wulingyuan. Arrive the evening before day one and leave the morning after day four. That gives you five hotel nights: three in Wulingyuan and two in Zhangjiajie city.
| Day | Main route | Hotel base |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tianzi Mountain, East Gate in and out | Wulingyuan |
| 2 | Yuanjiajie, East Gate in and out | Wulingyuan |
| 3 | Golden Whip Stream, South Gate to East Gate; collect luggage and move to the city | Zhangjiajie city |
| 4 | Tianmen cave and summit, returning to the city | Zhangjiajie city |
Book your Wulingyuan hotel near the East Gate and within easy reach of the town bus station. All three forest days finish at the East Gate. For the city nights, pick a hotel near the lower city station for the mountain cableway (天门山索道下站). You move hotels once, after finishing the sights around Wulingyuan.
Days one and two: separate Tianzi Mountain and Yuanjiajie
On day one, enter and leave through East Gate (吴家峪门票站). Take the park bus to Tianzi cableway, ride up, and take the summit shuttle to Helong Park (贺龙公园). Enjoy the views at the Imperial Brush Peaks (御笔峰) and Fairy Scattering Flowers (仙女散花), then return by the same cableway and valley bus. McDonald's at Helong Park (麦当劳天子山餐厅) has indoor seating with an average spend of about CNY 36 (≈ USD 5.4 ≈ USD 5.4) per person. Set aside about 45 minutes for lunch and a seated rest.
On day two, enter East Gate again. Take the valley bus to Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯), ride up, then use the summit bus to Yuanjiajie. Walk between the natural bridge (天下第一桥), the Avatar pillar (哈利路亚山 / 乾坤柱), and the viewpoints at 迷魂台. Return by Bailong Elevator and the valley bus to East Gate. Splitting these areas across two days cuts out extra summit transfers and leaves plenty of time at each viewpoint.
Day three: Golden Whip Stream and the move to the city

From Wulingyuan Bus Station (武陵源汽车站), take the local bus to the South Gate (森林公园门票站). The fare is CNY 8 (≈ USD 1.2 ≈ USD 1.2) per person one way. The ride takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Enter the South Gate, pass Oxygen Square (大氧吧广场), and head towards Laomowan (老磨湾). Walk along Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪) towards Shuiraosimen (水绕四门). The main creek trail is a 5.7 km flat stone path. Allow 3 to 4 hours with photo breaks. Total walking for the day is about 7 to 9 km.
The valley floor gives you upward views of the sandstone cliffs rising above clear water. Highlights along the stream include Golden Whip Rock (金鞭岩), Eagle Protecting the Whip (神鹰护鞭), and Purple Grass Pond (紫草潭). Stay on the main creek path when you pass Luancuanpo (乱窜坡), as that side trail climbs steeply up to Yuanjiajie.
Buy food in Wulingyuan before heading out, then stop for lunch near Meeting of Thousand Miles (千里相会). Packing your own meal in town makes it easy to handle vegetarian, vegan, or halal preferences.
When buying food to take into the park, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to explain your dietary needs to the shop or restaurant.
At Shuiraosimen, take the park bus back to the East Gate (吴家峪门票站). Finish by early afternoon, collect your luggage at the Wulingyuan hotel, and take a taxi or bus to your city hotel.
Day four: Tianmen cave and summit

Give Tianmen Mountain its own full day. Tianzi Mountain, visited on day one, is inside the forest park. Tianmen Mountain sits right by the city and requires a separate admission ticket from the forest park. The combined adult ticket is CNY 285 (≈ USD 43 ≈ USD 43) per person.
Start at the city cableway station (天门山索道下站). Follow the route assigned to your ticket date and slot, as detailed in the Tianmen routes guide:
Only Route C operates from 13 October 2026. Take the free shuttle from 天门山索道下站, the city lower station, to 天门山国家森林公园-山门, the mountain gate. Ride the Cave Express Cableway to the cave square, reach Heaven’s Gate by the 999 steps or lower escalators, then take the seven upper escalators to the summit. Return along the same route back to the mountain gate, then take the city shuttle or a taxi. The main city cableway is closed for rebuilding.
View Heaven's Gate Cave (天门洞) from the square, then choose between climbing the 999 steps or riding the lower through-mountain escalator for CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ≈ USD 4.8) per person. The seven upper escalators to the summit are included in your main ticket.
Choose the east or west summit cliff path to fit your pace. The ticket letter sets your transport, not your walking route on the summit. Return all the way to the city station, then head back to your city hotel.
If you must leave on day four, check your flight or train time. The Tianmen departure-day guide explains how to coordinate mountain return times, luggage pickup, and station transfers. Leaving the next morning gives you four full sightseeing days.
Alternative: two forest days and a city rest day
Use the combined Tianzi and Yuanjiajie route on day one and Golden Whip Stream on day two. Use day three for a late start, lunch, and a relaxed move from Wulingyuan to the city. Rest at your hotel, or take a short walk around 72 Qilou (七十二奇楼) or Dayong Ancient City (大庸古城) if you want an easy evening out. Keep Tianmen for day four. This is the best choice when saving your legs matters more than seeing an extra park area.
Two forest days: combine the high viewpoints
Follow the two-day forest route for the mountain viewpoints. Allow roughly 08:00 to 16:00 for viewpoints, transport, lunch, and lines. Expect about 6 to 8 km of walking along paved paths.
Start at the East Gate (吴家峪门票站). Take the free park bus to the lower Tianzi cableway station (天子山索道下站) and ride uphill for CNY 72 (≈ USD 11 ≈ USD 11) per adult. Take the upper shuttle to Helong Park (贺龙公园). Spend about 1.5 to 2 hours walking to Imperial Brush Peak (御笔峰) and Fairy Presenting Flowers (仙女散花).
Eat before taking the bus across the plateau to Yuanjiajie. McDonald's at Helong Park (麦当劳天子山餐厅) offers quick indoor seating with an average spend of about CNY 36 (≈ USD 5.4 ≈ USD 5.4) per person.
Take the upper park bus from Helong Park to Yangjiajie parking area (杨家界停车场). Change there for the bus to First Bridge parking lot (天下第一桥停车场). The two rides and connection take about one hour.
Walk past First Bridge under Heaven (天下第一桥), the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain pillar (哈利路亚山 / 乾坤柱), and Enchanting Terrace (迷魂台). Allow about two hours here. From the end of the path, take the short shuttle to Bailong Elevator top station (百龙天梯上站). Ride down for CNY 65 (≈ USD 9.7 ≈ USD 9.7) per adult, then take the valley bus back to the East Gate.
Alternative: Grand Canyon for a different experience

For this option, combine Tianzi and Yuanjiajie on day one and walk Golden Whip Stream on day two.
Check out and leave your bags with your Wulingyuan hotel front desk. Head to the Grand Canyon in the morning. The Wulingyuan to Grand Canyon bus costs CNY 15 (≈ USD 2.2 ≈ USD 2.2) per person each way and takes about 40 minutes.
Choose route B, bridge and canyon, to walk the high glass span followed by a valley trail. The adult admission reference is CNY 178 (≈ USD 27 ≈ USD 27) per person. Allow 3 to 4 hours inside, then time for the bus back and your city move.
Start at the upper visitor center (张家界大峡谷游客中心). Walk across the glass bridge (云天渡), then head down toward Rainbow Plaza (彩虹广场). Follow the canyon path past Touch Cave (摸摸洞) to Shenquan Lake (神泉湖). Board the lake boat near the end, then exit at the lower transport hub (峡谷出口 / 双坪游客集散中心) to catch the bus back.
For a valley visit without the high bridge, choose route A at CNY 50 (≈ USD 7.5 ≈ USD 7.5) per adult. It takes about 2 to 3 hours inside and keeps the day focused on water and shaded paths.
Take the bus back to Wulingyuan, pick up your bags, and take a taxi or bus to your city hotel near Tianmen Mountain's lower cableway station.
Another three-day forest route: add Huangshizhai
For this variation, combine Tianzi and Yuanjiajie on day one, walk Golden Whip Stream on day two, and visit Huangshizhai (黄石寨) on day three. Keep Tianmen for day four.
Take the local bus from Wulingyuan to South Gate. From Oxygen Square, ride the park shuttle to the lower Huangshizhai cable station. Ride up, hike the summit loop, ride down, and leave through South Gate. Collect your bags in Wulingyuan before heading to the city.
The full summit rim circuit is 2.5 km (about two hours of walking), while the shorter trail is 1.3 km (about one hour). For trail details, check the forest hiking guide.
For this three-day forest option, buy park admission plus the four-ride transport pass for CNY 474 (≈ USD 71 ≈ USD 71) per adult. Use your four rides for Tianzi cableway up, Bailong down, Huangshizhai cableway up, and Huangshizhai down. Adding Tianmen Mountain brings your major ticket and ride total to CNY 759 (≈ USD 114 ≈ USD 114) per adult.
Book the days and budget for the route
Park admission with buses costs CNY 236 (≈ USD 35 ≈ USD 35) per full-price adult and is valid for four consecutive calendar days from your first booked visit. Reserve your gate and entry time for every visit. For the main relaxed route, book East Gate on days one and two and South Gate on day three.
Admission, buses, and the four-ride mountain transport package cost CNY 474 (≈ USD 71 ≈ USD 71) per adult. Use its rides for Tianzi up and down, then Bailong up and down. Adding Tianmen at CNY 285 (≈ USD 43 ≈ USD 43) brings the main total to CNY 759 (≈ USD 114 ≈ USD 114) per adult. The two-forest-day rest option uses Tianzi up and Bailong down, making the forest portion CNY 373 (≈ USD 56 ≈ USD 56) and the total with Tianmen CNY 658 (≈ USD 98 ≈ USD 98). Adding the canyon B-route ticket (CNY 178 (≈ USD 27 ≈ USD 27)) to that two-day forest route gives CNY 836 (≈ USD 125 ≈ USD 125). Hotels, meals, local buses, and the city transfer are extra.
You can book forest park admission before your trip. For repeated entries and pass rules, review the park ticket guide. When entering parks and boarding cableways, bring the original US passport used for your booking.
Practical tips
- Keep your forest days back-to-back. Put the mountaintop viewpoints on the day with the clearest forecast and the stream hike on the cloudier day.
- Store luggage at your Wulingyuan hotel during daytime walks so you only carry a small daypack on the trails.
- Keep all snacks and plastic bags inside your backpack along Golden Whip Stream to avoid attracting wild macaques.
- Plan any Furong Town or Fenghuang stay after these four sightseeing days if you want to extend your trip.
