For a first visit with one full day, choose Zhangjiajie National Forest Park for the towering sandstone pillars. Pick Tianmen Mountain if Heaven's Gate and cliffside walkways are your main goal. With three full days, give two days to the forest park and one day to Tianmen.

Choose Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (张家界国家森林公园) for the towering sandstone pillars. Yuanjiajie (袁家界) puts you close to the famous pillar formations. Tianzi Mountain (天子山) gives broad views across peak forests. Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪) offers an easy valley walk beneath giant cliffs along the water.

Choose Tianmen Mountain (天门山) for Heaven's Gate (天门洞), a huge natural opening through the rock, and walking trails along sheer cliff edges. The cave square provides the classic view looking up at the archway and staircase. The summit offers walking trails on cliff sides and short optional glass paths.

What fits in one, two or three full days?

With one full day, choose the forest park if seeing the sandstone pillars is your top priority. Follow the one-day Yuanjiajie and Tianzi route using the outdoor elevator and cable car to cut down on long climbs. Pick Tianmen instead if the giant archway and cliff walks appeal to you more, or if your hotel is in downtown Zhangjiajie.

With two full days, you can choose between depth or seeing both major landmarks:

  • Both days in the forest park: visit the upper summit viewpoints on day one, then walk along Golden Whip Stream on day two. This gives you a relaxed pace and views from both top and bottom.
  • One day at each park: spend one day at Yuanjiajie and Tianzi in the forest park, and the second day exploring Tianmen's cave and summit. Choose this to see both distinct landscapes.

With three full days, put two forest park days together and spend the third day at Tianmen. Reverse the order if you stay in the city on your first night.

Count days when you can start sightseeing in the morning and finish in the afternoon. Tianmen takes about 4 to 6 hours on the mountain; add meals and travel from your hotel.

Compare the walking you will actually do

For the pillar highlights with less climbing, start at the East Gate, ride Bailong Elevator up, walk Yuanjiajie, then use the upper buses to Tianzi Mountain and take its cableway down. Give Yuanjiajie priority and use Yangjiajie (杨家界) as a bus interchange rather than adding its trails. Viewpoint paths still have stone stairs, and queues add standing time. Take a seated lunch break and choose fewer viewpoints if your walking time is limited.

Park buses run on two separate levels: the valley floor and the mountain plateaus. For a shorter valley walk, follow part of Golden Whip Stream and return the same way.

At Tianmen, seven upper escalator sections inside the mountain connect the cave area to the summit and are included in your admission ticket. Five lower escalator sections bypass the 999 outdoor steps between the cave square and the arch opening. Riding up costs CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ) per person, while walking down the steps or taking the downward escalator is free under current operations. On top, you walk between viewpoints. Pick a section of the West Line for Guigu cliff path (鬼谷栈道), then extend toward the temple if you want more walking. Ordinary paths let you bypass glass sections. For less exposed surroundings, choose the forest park's valley paths.

Choose your hotel around the first park

Wulingyuan (武陵源) is the most convenient base for visiting the forest park. The East Gate entrance, 吴家峪门票站, sits right by Wulingyuan town. Check the forest park entrance guide to match your hotel to your route, especially if you plan to start at the South Gate, 森林公园门票站, for Golden Whip Stream.

Downtown Zhangjiajie (Yongding District) is the base for Tianmen Mountain. The lower cableway station and shuttle departures are located in the city center.

If you visit both parks across three days, stay in Wulingyuan for your forest days, then move to a downtown hotel the evening before your Tianmen visit. Leave your luggage at your hotel front desk while exploring.

For a short trip from one hotel, allow extra travel time between Wulingyuan and downtown Zhangjiajie.

Compare route costs, not just admission

For a standard one-day highlights route in the forest park, budget CNY 373 (≈ USD 56 ) per adult: CNY 236 (≈ USD 35 ) for admission and park shuttle buses, CNY 65 (≈ USD 9.7 ) for Bailong Elevator going up, and CNY 72 (≈ USD 11 ) for Tianzi Cableway going down. Optional insurance costs CNY 3 (≈ USD 0.45 ) per person; travel from your hotel is extra.

Your forest park admission ticket lasts four consecutive calendar days from your first entry. A second valley day without more paid lifts uses the same admission. Another cableway ride adds its fare. Read the forest park ticket guide for breakdown details.

A Tianmen standard scenic ticket costs CNY 285 (≈ USD 43 ) per adult, before optional CNY 3 (≈ USD 0.45 ) per person insurance. If you take the lower escalator up to avoid the 999 steps, budget CNY 317 (≈ USD 47 ) per adult. The optional summit glass walkway requires shoe covers for CNY 5 (≈ USD 0.75 ) per person. Check the Tianmen Mountain overview for route options.

Buy each attraction's ticket separately. The forest park's four-day validity covers return visits there; Tianmen uses its own booked date. US passport holders can book tickets online using their passport number or show their passport at ticket windows.

Tianmen route adjustments

Only Route C operates from 13 October 2026 while the main city cableway undergoes rebuilding. The lower station in the city center remains open for tickets and customer service, with a free return shuttle running to the mountain gate. If you arrive directly by taxi or ride-hailing car, go straight to the mountain gate entrance. From the gate, take the Cave Express Cableway up to the cave square. You can climb the 999 steps or pay CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ) per person for the lower escalators to reach Heaven's Gate. From the cave, the seven upper escalator sections take you straight up to the summit trails. When you finish, return down the same route to the mountain gate, where you can take the free shuttle back to the city lower station or grab a taxi.

Check the Tianmen Mountain overview for route details during this maintenance window.

Practical tips for your final choice

  • Keep your forest park days consecutive. The four-day ticket window counts straight calendar days from your first entry.
  • Reserve your forest park entrance and time slot for every entry. Mountain transport tickets like elevators and cable cars are sold separately for one-way uphill or downhill travel.
  • Wide views from both mountains depend on visibility. When distant peaks are hidden in fog, a valley walk along Golden Whip Stream offers close forest, stream, and rock views.
  • Give each mountain its own full day rather than rushing between both in one day.

Common questions

Is Tianzi Mountain the same as Tianmen Mountain?

No. Tianzi Mountain (天子山) is a viewpoint area inside the forest park in Wulingyuan. Tianmen Mountain (天门山) is a separate mountain located next to downtown Zhangjiajie.
