With a US passport, apply for an L tourist visa for a return vacation to Zhangjiajie. For a visit between two different countries or regions, the 240-hour visa-free transit route can cover a stay in Hunan. Prepare your passport, flights and first hotel address before departure.
Choose the route for your travel document
With an ordinary US passport, a return vacation to China requires an L tourist visa. A visit on the way to a different country or region can use the 240-hour visa-free transit route through Hunan when your flight schedule meets its rules.
Build a valid 240-hour transit trip through Hunan
This route suits a short mainland visit between country or region A and a different country or region C. Hold a valid US passport with at least three months of remaining validity. You need a confirmed onward ticket with a set departure date and seat within the 240-hour window. You must also hold any entry documents required by that onward destination.
For example, Los Angeles to Changsha to Hong Kong fits the route pattern for a US traveler. Los Angeles to Changsha to Los Angeles is a round trip and requires a standard tourist visa. Hong Kong and Macao count as separate regions outside mainland China for this transit rule. Count every international connection when checking the place right before and right after your stay in mainland China.
Eligible international entry ports in Hunan include Changsha Huanghua International Airport (长沙黄花国际机场) and Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (张家界荷花国际机场). The allowed travel area covers all of Hunan province, so you can tour Zhangjiajie and travel to other permitted regions across mainland China. Your departure flight can leave from a different eligible airport in the transit network. You can check the current NIA transit list and port table to verify your route.
The 240-hour clock starts at midnight (00:00) on the day after you land. Show your confirmed onward flight to the airline check-in desk before boarding. When you arrive at the airport in China, present your passport and onward ticket at border control for temporary entry processing. Keep note of your departure deadline so you leave on time.
Apply for a tourist visa where you live
If your trip is a standard round-trip vacation from the United States, apply for an L tourist visa through the Chinese embassy or consulate responsible for your state. Applicants living outside the US can use the visa-centre location selector to locate their local office. You need a US passport with at least six months of validity, blank visa pages, a copy of your passport photo page, a completed application form and a standard passport photo.
Follow the official application instructions for your consulate or visa centre. Tourist applicants applying within the United States do not need to submit round-trip flight bookings, hotel reservations, a daily itinerary or an invitation letter.
When you receive your visa, review the Enter Before date, the number of entries and the Duration of Each Stay. A side trip to Hong Kong or Macao counts as leaving mainland China. If you plan to visit Hong Kong and then return to Zhangjiajie, make sure your visa permits multiple entries.
Prepare your arrival folder and entry card

Keep these items ready in your carry-on bag for border control:
- Original US passport, containing your valid Chinese visa if entering with one.
- Onward flight, train or ferry ticket leaving mainland China.
- First hotel confirmation showing the Chinese name, street address and phone number.
- A basic outline of your travel dates and destinations.
The foreigner arrival card is completely free. You can fill it out before your flight using the official NIA arrival-card service. Choose Entry Declaration and enter your passport details, flight number, entry port and first hotel address. If you enter visa-free on a transit route, select that option on the form. If you land in Shanghai first and take a domestic flight to Zhangjiajie, list Shanghai as your port of entry. Save or screenshot the confirmation screen for immigration.
You can also access the form through 移民局12367 on WeChat or Alipay. At the airport, digital terminals, QR codes and paper cards remain available near the immigration counters.
Register your stay and use the same document for tickets
Hotels in China handle police registration for international guests. Present your original US passport at the front desk when checking in. If you stay in a private home or rental apartment, you or your host must complete registration within 24 hours of arrival. You can complete this online nationwide through the NIA service platform under Foreigner Service and Accommodation Registration. Ask your host for assistance with property details, then check your submission under Registration Record Inquiry.
Always use your exact US passport number when purchasing attraction tickets for Zhangjiajie. Bring your physical passport with you to every park entrance and cable car station. Check our forest park ticket guide and Tianmen Mountain guide for real-name booking rules and gate entry steps.
Practical tips for your travel dates
If you renew your US passport after booking flights or park tickets, update your passport number with the airline and ticket platforms before departure.
