You can walk along shaded canyon streams beneath giant sandstone pillars, or climb thousands of stone steps up to high panoramic viewpoints. These four complete routes combine on-foot trail sections with rides down and park shuttle buses back to town.
Choose your walking day
For a full day that pairs a shaded valley walk with high cliff viewpoints, combine Golden Whip Stream, the Luancuanpo stairs, and Yuanjiajie. Keep Huangshizhai and the Wolongling climb on Tianzi Mountain for separate hiking days.
Golden Whip Stream offers a gentle walk on stone-paved paths with gentle changes of level beneath the towering pillars. Huangshizhai combines a 4,500-step climb with a scenic summit rim trail. Luancuanpo connects the valley floor to the Avatar pillar viewpoints on foot. Wolongling is a steep stair climb up Tianzi Mountain.
| Trail | Walking sections | Hiking time | Start and finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Whip Stream | 5.7 km valley path | 2 to 3 hours | South Gate to East Gate, or reverse |
| Huangshizhai | 3.2 km stair climb, then 3.8 km summit loop | 1.5 to 2 hours climbing, 2 hours on top | South Gate to South Gate |
| Luancuanpo to Yuanjiajie | 3.5 km valley, 2.3 km stairs, 1.5 km cliff path | 5 to 6 hours total | East Gate to East Gate |
| Wolongling to Tianzi | Valley approach, steep stairs, summit lookouts | 2 to 3 hours climbing, plus lookouts | East Gate to East Gate |
All routes use stone stairs and paved paths. Golden Whip stays mostly flat, while Huangshizhai climbs about 4,500 steps. Separating your valley walk and your summit stair days gives you plenty of time for photos and rest.
Golden Whip Stream: walk the whole valley

Start at the South Gate, 森林公园南门(锣鼓塔票站). Walk past Oxygen Bar Square, 大氧吧广场, near Laomowan, 老磨湾. Follow the signs for Golden Whip Stream, 金鞭溪, into the cool forest canyon.
The main walking path runs 5.7 km to Water Winding Four Gates, 水绕四门. Plan on 2 to 3 hours with casual stops. The 5.7 km measure covers the paved walking trail between these two major trailheads.
Near the start, look up at the sheer pillar of Golden Whip Rock, 金鞭岩, and the eagle-shaped peak beside it, 神鹰护鞭. Continue past 劈山救母 and the emerald pool at 紫草潭. At Qianlixianghui, 千里相会, the stair trail up to Yuanjiajie branches uphill. Stay on the main valley path beside the water to complete the stream walk, passing 楠木坪 before reaching 水绕四门.
At the eastern end, board an internal park shuttle bus to the East Gate, 武陵源东门(吴家峪票站), which steps straight out into Wulingyuan town. If you hike in reverse from East Gate to South Gate, take the shuttle bus to 水绕四门 first, then walk west. That direction is convenient if your hotel is in Zhangjiajie downtown.
Park buses serve both trailheads. The canyon itself is walking-only, so choose your finish gate before you start.
Huangshizhai: climb the front stairs and circle the summit

This trail makes a rewarding full-day hike with one major climb. It starts and ends at the South Gate, making it convenient if you stay nearby.
- From Oxygen Bar Square, cross the bridge at 老磨湾. Follow the signs for the front mountain path, 黄石寨前山登山游道.
- Climb the stone steps past 天书宝匣, 定海神针, and the rock gateway at 南天门. The trail climbs about 3.2 km and 4,500 steps. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours for the ascent.
- At the top, visit the traditional pavilion 六奇阁 and the lookout terrace at 摘星台. Follow the large summit circuit, 大环线, past 五指峰 and viewing platforms along the cliff edge. The full loop measures about 3.8 km and takes about 2 hours.
- Walk to the upper cable station, 黄石寨索道上站, and ride down. At the lower station, 白沙井, catch the park shuttle bus back to Oxygen Bar Square, then exit through the South Gate.
The ascent and full loop add up to about 7.0 km. Add the gate approach and any cable-station connections. The shorter summit loop is about 1.3 km and takes around 1 hour. Choose it when you want the climb but a shorter visit on top.
Taking the cable car both ways leaves the full summit circuit to walk, including its smaller flights of stairs. Reach the lower cable station by bus from Oxygen Bar Square. Walking down the front route adds about 3.2 km of downhill stairs. With the ascent and full loop, those three walking sections total about 10.2 km.
Huangshizhai is a separate summit area. Return to the lower transport network to move elsewhere in the park.
Luancuanpo: walk from the stream to Yuanjiajie
This route links the valley floor directly to the upper pillar lookouts on foot. Starting at the East Gate and riding the elevator down brings you back to Wulingyuan town.
Take an internal park shuttle bus from the East Gate to 水绕四门. Walk west along Golden Whip Stream for about 3.5 km to the trail junction at 千里相会. Turn onto the stair trail signed for Yuanjiajie, 袁家界, known as Luancuanpo, 乱窜坡. This stair climb covers about 2.3 km and takes 40 to 60 minutes.
You will top out at the Back Garden lookout, 后花园. Walk along the cliffside path through 迷魂台, the Avatar pillar 乾坤柱, and the natural rock span at 天下第一桥. Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours for this 1.5 km scenic section. From 天下第一桥, take the marked return trail back toward 迷魂台停车场 for the shuttle bus to the upper elevator station, 百龙天梯上站.
Ride Bailong Elevator down, then take the park shuttle bus back to the East Gate. Allow 5 to 6 hours for the whole day. The main trail sections total about 7.3 km, plus walking between shuttle stops.
To hike downhill instead, ride Bailong Elevator up and take the shuttle bus to 迷魂台. Visit the Yuanjiajie lookouts, then take 后花园 down 乱窜坡 to 千里相会. Turn east along the stream to 水绕四门 and catch the shuttle bus out.
Tianzi Mountain: a longer stair day
The Wolongling trail, 卧龙岭, is a sustained forest stair climb for strong hikers. Enter at the East Gate and take a park shuttle bus to Ten-Mile Gallery, 十里画廊.
Walk along the valley path beside the mini-train tracks toward 三姐妹峰. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for this approach. Continue up 卧龙岭 to Tianzi Pavilion, 天子阁. Allow 2 to 3 hours for this steady climb up several thousand stone steps.
Spend 1 to 1.5 hours visiting the Tianzi Mountain lookouts and Helong Park, 贺龙公园. When ready to head down, take an upper park shuttle bus to the cable car station, 天子山索道上站, ride down, and take the valley bus back to the East Gate.
For more peak views on your Tianzi day, add the lookouts at 点将台 and 神堂湾 to the summit visit. Allow extra time for these stops after the main stair climb.
For a walking descent from 天子阁, the 月亮垭 to 南天门 route ends at 三所路口. Take a lower park bus from there. This descent finishes at a different valley stop from the Wolongling trailhead. Give this full climb its own day for the stair route and summit viewpoints.
Cable costs and the bus after your walk
A Huangshizhai cable descent or a Bailong Elevator descent costs CNY 65 (≈ USD 9.7 ≈ USD 9.7) per adult, one way. Huangshizhai cable travel both ways costs CNY 130 (≈ USD 19 ≈ USD 19) per adult. A Tianzi cable descent costs CNY 72 (≈ USD 11 ≈ USD 11) per adult. Choose the descent ride to save the long downhill staircase; you still walk the summit paths.
These rides are separate from park admission and park buses. The adult admission ticket is CNY 236 (≈ USD 35 ≈ USD 35) and includes the internal shuttle buses. You can book Zhangjiajie National Forest Park tickets before your walking day.
An East Gate finish brings you directly into Wulingyuan town. From a South Gate finish, take the exterior bus to 武陵源汽车站 to return to Wulingyuan for CNY 8 (≈ USD 1.2 ≈ USD 1.2) per person. For Zhangjiajie city, board the exterior bus signed 张家界中心汽车站.
If you left luggage or parked at the South Gate, Huangshizhai returns to it directly. A valley crossing finishing at the East Gate requires the exterior town-to-South-Gate bus to retrieve items left at the southern entrance.
Practical trail tips
- Buy water and trail snacks before starting the Luancuanpo or Wolongling stair climbs, as shops along the steep sections are limited.
- Keep food zipped inside your backpack along Golden Whip Stream and Ten-Mile Gallery, where wild macaques look for bags.
- Check the last operating time for cable cars and shuttle buses when you reach upper transport hubs so you finish before services stop.
- Save the shaded valley stream walk for cloudy or foggy days, and keep summit rim circuits for clear days when the pillar views open up below.
