Booking trains across China is straightforward once you know which station you need and how passport boarding works. Zhangjiajie has two separate train stations, so matching your booking to the right entrance saves time and taxi detours. Here is how to pick your booking platform, verify your passport, and navigate the station directly to your seat.

Choose a booking platform

Use 12306 to buy directly from China Railway. The English 12306 website accepts US passports and other international passports.

On the English 12306 website, register with your passport details and an email address. This registration does not require a Chinese phone number. Open the activation email to activate your account. Complete your registration and passport verification before your ticket release day.

Trip.com train booking works well if you prefer a familiar booking flow and international credit cards. Always compare the standard rail fare with your final total, as third-party platforms may offer optional add-on services. The official 12306 portal does not charge seat-selection fees.

A station ticket counter is helpful if you want staff to book or verify your document in person. Bring your physical passport and your exact route details. Counters accept CNY cash, bank cards, and mobile payments.

Use the exact station names

Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站) serves the city's high-speed bullet trains. Booking screens often list it as Zhangjiajiexi. Zhangjiajie Station (张家界站) is a separate regular-rail station in the central Guanliping area. Always check your ticket before telling a taxi driver where to go.

For regional side trips, search Zhangjiajie West → (芙蓉镇). The station name identifies the rail stop, with local taxis or shuttles connecting you to the historic town upon arrival.

Large Chinese cities often have multiple stations named with cardinal directions like East, South, or West. Always match the exact station name on your booking. Use the West Station map point and city station map point to keep them straight. From West Station, continue to city hotels or Wulingyuan.

Book your train and confirm ticket issue

The standard ticket sale window is 15 days, including today. For instance, on October 8, tickets for October 22 go on sale. Each departure station has a specific daily release time (起售时间) in Beijing time (UTC+8).

Some travel platforms let you place advance requests before the 15-day window opens. An advance request is not an issued ticket. Check your order once the sale window opens to confirm you have an issued ticket with a train number, carriage, and seat.

  1. Enter your departure and arrival stations and travel date.
  2. Select your travel class. Second class has 3+2 seating. First class has 2+2 seating with wider seats and more legroom.
  3. Add each passenger using their full passport name exactly as printed on the photo page, keeping all given names.
  4. Complete passport identity verification. On 12306, enter passport numbers for online verification. If prompted, upload a clear photo of the passport page with no glare.
  5. Review your travel details, pay, and save your confirmation.
  6. Note your train number, departure time, carriage (车厢), and seat (座位).

For high-speed trains, seats A and F are window seats. Seats C and D are aisle seats, and B is the middle seat in second class. Booking travel companions together automatically places you in adjacent seats when available. A ticket marked 无座 means standing room without a reserved seat.

If your preferred train sells out on 12306, use the 候补 waitlist function. The system automatically issues tickets if seats open up.

Enter the station and find your gate

Arrive at the station entrance 45 to 60 minutes before departure to allow time for security checks and walking to your gate.

Bring the original physical passport used for booking. China uses an electronic ticket system tied directly to your passport number. You do not need to collect paper tickets.

  1. Follow signs for 进站口 (Entrance).
  2. Go to the 人工通道 (manual or staff-assisted lane) where staff scan your passport.
  3. Put all luggage through the X-ray scanner and walk through the security checkpoint.
  4. Check the main departures display board for your train number to find your 检票口 (boarding gate).
  5. Wait near your gate. Join the queue when boarding begins, and present your passport at the gate scanner.

Boarding gates typically close 3 to 5 minutes before the train departs. Head to the platform as soon as boarding opens.

Find your carriage and seat

Look at the platform overhead screens or colored floor markings to see where your carriage will stop. Check the digital carriage number beside the train door before stepping aboard.

A seat assignment showing 05车 08F means Carriage 5, Row 8, Seat F.

Place large suitcases in the luggage racks at the end of each carriage and smaller bags on the overhead racks above your seat. Keep your passport handy for onboard checks. When arriving at your destination, follow signs for 出站口 (Exit) and scan your passport at the exit gate.

Practical tips

  • Luggage limits: Adults may carry up to 20 kg (44 lbs) and children up to 10 kg (22 lbs). On high-speed trains, the combined length, width, and height of each bag must not exceed 130 cm (51 inches).
  • Power banks: Portable chargers must be clearly labeled and have a capacity of 100 Wh or less.
  • Finding your gate: If you need help, show this phrase along with your train number to station staff: 请问这趟车在哪个检票口? (Which boarding gate is for this train?)

If you need to adjust your journey, see train ticket changes and refunds.

Common questions

Why can 12306 show a reservation much earlier than 15 days?

A Beijing to Shanghai pilot program accepts advance reservations 60 to 17 days before departure and allocates tickets 20 to 16 days out. Once allocated, payment must be completed by 23:00 Beijing time. Standard routes like Zhangjiajie follow the regular 15-day sale window.

How do I add a child to a domestic train booking?

Children aged 6 to 13 need a child-fare ticket. Travelers aged 14 and older require an adult ticket. Each ticketed adult can bring one child under 6 free of charge without a separate seat by registering the child's passport details during booking. If an under-6 child needs their own seat, buy a child ticket.
