Register Alipay on your smartphone with a US mobile number that receives SMS, upload your passport page for verification, and add your credit or debit card. You can finish the entire setup before leaving the United States. In Zhangjiajie, your linked card pays local merchant bills through simple QR code scans.
Register with a phone number that receives SMS
Download Alipay (支付宝) from the App Store or Google Play. Make sure to install the standard mainland Alipay app.
- Select your country code (+1 for the US) and type your mobile number.
- Enter the SMS verification code sent to your phone to create your account.
- Tap Me > Settings and switch the display language to English.
Keep your primary phone number active so you can receive SMS codes while traveling. Logging into Alipay or confirming a bank charge may require a quick text code. If you use a data-only eSIM for internet in China, keep your home SIM active for incoming text messages.
Verify your US passport
Tap Verify now when the app prompts for identity verification:
- Select Passport, upload a clear photo of your US passport info page, and complete the quick selfie check requested on screen.
Identity verification and card linking are separate steps. You can check your verification status directly under your account profile.
Add your US credit or debit card
Go to Me > Bank Cards > Add Card. Enter your 16-digit card number, expiration date, security code (CVV), and billing address. Complete any security passcode or mobile verification requested by your US bank.
Alipay accepts major card networks including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Your purchases charge directly to your US card, so you do not need a Chinese bank account or an in-app stored balance.
Scan the merchant or show your payment code
At restaurants in Wulingyuan or shops in Zhangjiajie city, checkout uses two main methods:
You scan the merchant: tap Scan (扫一扫), point your camera at the shop's printed QR code, and type the bill amount. Confirm the store name and total charge, then authorize the payment. Show the green success screen to the cashier.
The cashier scans your phone: tap Pay/Receive (收付款) to bring up your dynamic barcode. Pick your linked US card and let the cashier scan your screen.
International cards work for merchant retail purchases. If a vendor's personal QR code fails to accept your US card, ask for their business merchant code: 请用商家收款码。
TenPayGo for WeChat Pay merchants
TenPayGo is Tencent's standalone payment app for international travelers. Download it from the App Store or Google Play. Verify your email, link your US card or Apple Pay, and pay at vendors that accept WeChat Pay.
Understand the CNY 200 (≈ USD 30 ≈ USD 30) fee threshold
When paying with an international card on Alipay, platform service fees follow a clear rule:
- CNY 200 (≈ USD 30 ≈ USD 30) or less: the standard platform fee is 0% (waived).
- Above CNY 200 (≈ USD 30 ≈ USD 30): a 3% platform fee applies to the entire purchase amount.
For example, on a CNY 300 (≈ USD 45 ≈ USD 45) restaurant bill, the 3% platform fee is CNY 9 (≈ USD 1.3 ≈ USD 1.3), bringing the total charge to CNY 309 (≈ USD 46 ≈ USD 46) before your US bank converts the currency. The app clearly displays the fee on the confirmation screen before you authorize the charge.
Standard overseas card limits allow up to USD 5,000 per transaction and USD 50,000 per year.
Where to use Alipay in Zhangjiajie
- Meals and small shops: use the merchant code for your bill. Small street stalls might ask you to type the amount, while larger stores scan your phone.
- Hotel checkout: pay your room balance at the front desk using the hotel's merchant scanner. Keep incidentals separate.
- Park tickets and passes: choose Alipay on official booking pages. Before buying, check the forest park ticket guide and Tianmen Mountain guide to confirm your routes.
Get help at Zhangjiajie airport
The international arrivals hall at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (张家界荷花国际机场) has a dedicated visitor service desk. Staff at the 境外来宾综合服务中心 can help you connect to Wi-Fi, install payment apps, or get a local SIM card.
Useful phrases and billing tips
To view past transactions, tap Me > Bills. If you need a refund for a store purchase or canceled booking, the merchant refunds the order amount alongside the original 3% Alipay service fee.
