A direct high-speed train takes just 23 to 30 minutes from Zhangjiajie West to Furongzhen. A short 10-to-15-minute taxi then brings you right to the scenic town entrance. Book your return train in advance to enjoy the illuminated waterfalls and still make it back to your hotel with ease.

Use Zhangjiajie West and Furongzhen stations

Search 张家界西 → 芙蓉镇 when booking train tickets. High-speed services run between Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站) and (芙蓉镇站). Keep in mind that Zhangjiajie's older city station (张家界站) in the southern downtown area near Tianmen Mountain does not run this bullet train service.

Choose a direct train on the Zhangjiajie-Jishou-Huaihua line. The ride takes 23–30 minutes, and a second-class ticket costs CNY 22–40 (≈ USD 3.3–6.0 ) per person, one way. Because Furongzhen Station sits outside the historic center, plan for a quick road connection after you arrive.

Get from your hotel to Zhangjiajie West Station

From downtown Zhangjiajie or the Tianmen Mountain cable car area, a taxi to Zhangjiajie West Station takes about 20 minutes. Public bus 17 also runs to the high-speed rail hub (高铁枢纽站) for CNY 2 (≈ USD 0.30 ) per person.

From Wulingyuan, a taxi ride takes 40–60 minutes. You can also take a direct bus from Wulingyuan Bus Terminal (武陵源汽车客运站) to West Station for around CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ) per person.

Aim to arrive at the station entrance 45–60 minutes before departure to clear security and ticket gates smoothly. Leave a downtown city hotel about 1.5 hours before departure, or a Wulingyuan hotel about 2 hours before departure. Be sure to pick up any stored bags from your hotel before heading to the station.

Buy your outward and return train tickets

High-speed rail tickets go on sale 15 days ahead of travel. Booking both directions at the same time locks in your evening schedule.

  1. Open China Railway 12306 or book the Zhangjiajie–Furong train online.
  2. Search 张家界西 / Zhangjiajie West to 芙蓉镇, select your date, and choose a direct second-class seat.
  3. Enter each passenger's name and passport number exactly as shown on the physical US passport.
  4. Complete payment and save the confirmation with your train number, departure time, carriage, and seat.
  5. Search 芙蓉镇 → 张家界西 on your return date to secure your trip back.

At Zhangjiajie West, head to the 进站 (Entrance) gates, pass through bag security, and check the departure board for your train number and boarding gate. Bring your physical US passport to pass through the staffed manual verification lane. Staffed station counters also sell tickets and accept RMB cash.

Finish the trip from Furongzhen Station to the old town

Follow the 出口 (Exit) signs from the arrival platform. Outside, take a metered taxi or the direct shuttle marked for 芙蓉镇景区 (Furong Scenic Area). A taxi takes 10–15 minutes to the old-town road entrance and costs around CNY 20–30 (≈ USD 3.0–4.5 ) per car, one way. This is the easiest choice if you are traveling with companions or carrying daypacks.

For a day trip, set 芙蓉镇景区 as your destination. The Furong ticket-office map point marks the entrance gate. If you booked an overnight stay, give the driver the specific drop-off point provided by your hotel, as cliffside inns near the waterfall require walking through pedestrian stone lanes and steps.

Local minibuses also operate outside the station. The direct scenic shuttle runs straight to the main gate. A standard minibus to 芙蓉镇汽车站 (Furong Bus Station) costs about CNY 3 (≈ USD 0.45 ) per person, followed by a CNY 5 (≈ USD 0.75 ) shared van ride to the scenic gate. If taking a minibus, ask the driver 这班车到芙蓉镇景区吗? ("Does this vehicle go to the Furong scenic area?") to make sure you get on the direct scenic route.

Keep suitcases off the old-town steps

Furong's historic center is built along steep river gorges with many stone staircases. If you are returning to your Zhangjiajie hotel the same night, leave large luggage at your hotel's front desk and bring only a light daypack for the town's paved steps and waterfall walkways.

If you plan to stay overnight in Furong, arrange station pickup or luggage assistance with your hotel in advance. Provide your arrival time and train number so staff can meet your car at the road drop-off point and guide you down to the room.

If you are passing through Furong on the way to another city, you can store bags at private luggage shops right outside Furongzhen Station. Confirm the shop's closing time before leaving your bags so you can pick them up smoothly before your train.

Return to Zhangjiajie and your hotel

When returning, tell your driver 芙蓉镇站 (Furongzhen Station). Leave the old-town road pickup area about 75–90 minutes before your train departure to allow for the drive, bag pickup, and station entry. Give yourself extra time to walk back up the stairs from the lower waterfall area.

For example, if your return train leaves at 20:00, plan to leave the old-town road gate around 18:30–18:45. Make sure to check the actual timetable for your date.

An evening day trip lets you enjoy the illuminated waterfall after sunset and catch the final high-speed train back to Zhangjiajie. Staying overnight allows you to explore at a relaxed pace without watching the clock. If you plan to catch the last evening train, arrange your taxi to the station ahead of time before heading down to the waterfall.

After arriving back at Zhangjiajie West Station, take a taxi to downtown Zhangjiajie in about 20 minutes, or back to Wulingyuan in about 40–60 minutes.

Direct car alternative for groups

A direct private car or taxi from downtown Zhangjiajie to Furong takes about 1.5 to 2 hours and costs around CNY 250–300 (≈ USD 37–45 ) per car, one way. This is a practical option for families or groups traveling with multiple suitcases who want to skip train station security and transfers. Agree on the total price and return pickup timing with the driver before setting off.

Practical tips

  • Time: Train schedules and pickup times use China Standard Time (UTC+8).
  • Local rides: Drivers and minibuses accept mobile payment or RMB cash. Local transit fares are separate from your train ticket.
  • Luggage limits: High-speed trains allow 20 kg (44 lbs) per passenger. The total combined dimensions (length + width + height) of each item must not exceed 130 cm (51 inches).
