Plan for three full sightseeing days: two in the forest park and one at Tianmen Mountain. Adding a fourth day lets you explore at a relaxed pace or visit the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge.

Choose your full sightseeing days

Count only full days when you can start in the morning and explore until late afternoon. Arrival evenings and departure mornings count as travel time. A three-night stay often yields only two full days of sightseeing depending on your flight or train schedule.

Full days Best plan What you see
One day Pick the forest park or Tianmen Mountain Focus on one mountain landscape
Two days Two days in the forest park, or one forest day plus Tianmen Explore sandstone pillars and valleys, or combine two distinct areas
Three days Two forest park days plus one Tianmen day Sandstone pillars, Golden Whip Stream, and Tianmen Cave arch
Four days Add the Grand Canyon or split the forest park across three days Walk the long glass bridge or slow down your forest walking pace

If you have two full days, spend both in the forest park if seeing the Avatar-style sandstone pillars is your top goal. Split your time between one upper forest day and Tianmen Mountain if you want two different mountain landscapes. The one-day forest route and two-day forest route provide detailed walking paths.

Understand the three separate attractions

Each major attraction sits in a different area with its own ticket system and entry gates. Tianzi Mountain (天子山) is inside the forest park, while Tianmen Mountain (天门山) sits right next to the central city.

National Forest Park: sandstone pillars and stream valleys

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (张家界国家森林公园) sits in Wulingyuan district (武陵源). It features thousands of vertical sandstone pillars. Yuanjiajie (袁家界) puts you close to the iconic towering peaks, while Tianzi Mountain offers wide summit views across the pillar forest. Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪) runs through a shaded valley along the forest floor.

A standard adult baseline ticket cost is 373 yuan (≈ USD 56 ) per person: 236 yuan (≈ USD 35 ) for park admission and shuttles, 65 yuan (≈ USD 9.7 ) for Bailong Elevator one way, and 72 yuan (≈ USD 11 ) for Tianzi Mountain cable car one way. The park admission covers four consecutive calendar days. Use it for your second park day within that window, booking your specific gate and entry time slot. The forest park ticket guide explains all ticket options.

Tianmen Mountain: the cave arch and cliff paths

Tianmen Mountain (天门山) has the great natural arch of Tianmen Cave (天门洞), summit cliff paths, and short glass walkways. It suits a separate city-based day. The standard adult ticket is 285 yuan (≈ USD 43 ) per person.

Only Route C operates from 13 October 2026. Catch the free shuttle bus from the city lower station (天门山索道下站) to the mountain gate (天门山国家森林公园-山门), or take a direct taxi there. Ride the Express Cableway up to the cave square. From there, reach Heaven's Gate using either the 999 stairs or the lower escalators, then take the seven upper escalators to the summit. Follow the same path in reverse back down to the mountain gate to catch the return shuttle or a taxi. The long city-to-mountain cableway is closed for rebuilding. Review current Tianmen tickets and routes before you go.

Grand Canyon: the long glass bridge and valley

Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon (张家界大峡谷) is in Cili County, east of Wulingyuan. Its long glass bridge spans a high gorge, and Route B leads down into the scenic canyon floor. This serves as an ideal fourth day if you want both a glass bridge walk and a river valley trail.

The Route B ticket is 178 yuan (≈ USD 27 ) per adult. Compare the canyon ticket routes and check the journey from Wulingyuan when adding it to your trip. Keep this visit next to your Wulingyuan hotel nights.

Use two hotel bases and move once

Stay in Wulingyuan town near the East Gate (吴家峪门票站) for consecutive forest park days. This lets you walk or take a very short ride to the gate each morning. The South Gate (森林公园门票站) is a different entrance on the opposite side of the park. Check the park gate guide to match your gate with your daily trail.

Move to downtown Zhangjiajie in Yongding district (永定) for Tianmen Mountain. Choose a hotel near the cable car station or transit hub. Keep your forest park nights consecutive, complete your final park route, collect your bags, and move to downtown that evening. You can then head up Tianmen Mountain directly from downtown the next morning.

Reverse this order if your arrival time or Tianmen ticket slot works better: stay downtown for Tianmen first, then make one move to Wulingyuan.

Match the days to your walking pace

Elevators and cable cars handle the steepest climbs, but viewpoints, stairs, shuttle transfers, and boarding lines still require steady walking.

If you prefer shorter walks, choose fewer upper viewpoints and walk only a section of the valley path. The complete Golden Whip Stream trail measures 5.7 km, which works best as a dedicated half-day walk rather than an add-on after climbing mountain peaks. Use the Tianmen less-walking guide to plan gentle cliffside routes.

Book in an order that fits the trip

  1. Confirm travel dates and passport validity for your trip.
  2. Compare transport options by their exact arrival station or airport. Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport is DYG (张家界荷花国际机场). Zhangjiajie West Station (张家界西站) handles high-speed rail, while Zhangjiajie Station (张家界站) serves regular trains.
  3. Reserve your Tianmen Mountain route and time slot, then book your consecutive forest park entry dates, gates, and entry slots.
  4. Match hotel nights to those reservations: Wulingyuan for the forest park, then downtown for Tianmen, or the reverse.
  5. Select your daily walking routes along with Bailong Elevator or cable car rides.
  6. Coordinate luggage pickup with your hotel switch, train departure, or flight.

Use the travel budget guide to calculate hotel nights, meals, and local transit alongside scenic ticket costs.

Add Furong Town or Fenghuang Ancient Town

If you have extra time, add an overnight trip outside Zhangjiajie. Pick Furong Town to see its waterfall over the cliffs, or choose Fenghuang Ancient Town for riverside walkways and evening lights. Plan these stops after your three main mountain days. The Zhangjiajie, Furong, and Fenghuang itinerary maps out the full route.

Practical tips for your first trip

  • Book tickets using your full name and US passport number exactly as they appear on your passport (for example, JOHN ALLEN SMITH), and bring your physical passport to every attraction gate.
  • Save the Chinese name and address of your hotel, along with the Chinese name of your target park entrance, to show taxi drivers or paste into ride-hailing apps.
  • Pack light snacks and water for long trail sections along Golden Whip Stream, especially if you have specific dietary preferences.
  • Plan upper mountain viewpoints for clear weather. If low clouds cover the peaks, head down to valley trails where rock towers remain visible through the trees.
  • Choose early morning entry slots for popular mountain peaks to beat peak crowds at cable cars and elevators.

Common questions

Can I add Furong Town to this trip?

Yes. Add Furong Town (芙蓉镇) as an overnight stop after completing your main Zhangjiajie days. This gives you time to see its illuminated waterfall and evening old town streets without cutting short your two full days in the forest park.
