The direct high-speed train from Hong Kong West Kowloon gets you to Zhangjiajie West Station by mid-afternoon with zero train changes. Nonstop flights take less time in the air and leave in the late afternoon on select days. Choose the route that matches your schedule, then take a taxi or bus straight to your hotel in Yongding city or Wulingyuan.
Choose the best route for your schedule
For a first visit with heavy bags, pick the direct high-speed train if you can start early in the morning. You arrive at Zhangjiajie West in mid-afternoon with no train changes, leaving plenty of daylight to reach your hotel.
Pick a direct flight if it runs on your date and you prefer an afternoon departure from Hong Kong. When comparing total trip time, remember to add travel time to Hong Kong airport, check-in, and the ride from Zhangjiajie airport to your hotel.
| Option | Route and schedule | Why choose it |

| Direct flight HB872 | HKG 17:25 to DYG 19:15 (1h 50m) | Less travel time on board and a late-afternoon start |
| Train connection via Shenzhen, Guangzhou, or Changsha | Transfer at Shenzhen North, Guangzhou South, or Changsha South | More departure times if you miss the morning train |
Take the direct train from West Kowloon
Search Hong Kong West Kowloon (香港西九龙) to Zhangjiajie West (张家界西). Zhangjiajie West Station sits just north of the city center.
Fares are CNY 755 (≈ USD 113 ≈ USD 113) for second class and CNY 1206 (≈ USD 181 ≈ USD 181) for first class per adult one way. Second class is comfortable and costs less, while first class gives you more legroom and wider seats for the nearly seven-hour trip.
Book your ticket with your US passport
Book tickets on China Railway 12306, at West Kowloon station ticket windows, or through trip booking apps. The booking window opens 15 days before departure (counting the departure day) at 08:00.
When booking with a US passport on the English version of 12306, enter your name exactly as shown in your passport: surname first, followed by your given names (for example, SMITH JOHN EDWARD). Complete identity verification online or at the station, and bring your physical passport on travel day.
Station arrival and border clearance
West Kowloon links directly to Austin Station on the MTR Tuen Ma Line and Kowloon Station on the Tung Chung Line and Airport Express. Follow the pedestrian tunnels to reach the station. Taxis drop off at Level B1.
Arrive at the station 90 to 120 minutes before departure if you have large luggage. Real-name verification and ticket checks at Level B1 close 30 minutes before departure. After passing security, head down to Level B3 to complete both Hong Kong exit and Mainland entry immigration in one place. Boarding gates open 15 minutes before departure and close 5 minutes before the train leaves.
Fly nonstop to Hehua Airport
Search HKG to DYG on Greater Bay Airlines. DYG is Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (张家界荷花国际机场).
Direct flights like flight HB872 (17:25–19:15) take 1 hour 50 minutes on scheduled days. A 19:15 arrival gets you to your hotel in the evening. If traveling with family or heavy suitcases, booking an airport transfer gets everyone to the hotel in one vehicle.
Connect by train via Shenzhen, Guangzhou, or Changsha
If the direct morning train is sold out or you want to leave later in the day, book a connection at Shenzhen North (深圳北), Guangzhou South (广州南), or Changsha South (长沙南). You will need two separate tickets: West Kowloon to the transfer hub, and the hub to Zhangjiajie West. You clear both Hong Kong and Mainland border checks at West Kowloon before boarding your first train.
Leave 30 to 45 minutes between trains for a transfer at Shenzhen North. For larger stations like Guangzhou South or Changsha South, leave at least 60 minutes. When switching trains, follow the overhead 便捷换乘 (Convenient Transfer) signs without leaving the secure station area.
If booking via Changsha, make sure your ticket says Changsha South (长沙南). Do not book Changsha Railway Station (长沙站), which is a separate station across town.
