Starting at the Wulingyuan east gate lets you explore Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain in a smooth single-day loop. The route begins and ends at the same gate, making it easy to walk or take a short taxi ride back to your Wulingyuan hotel. Plan for 8 to 9 hours to cover the viewpoints, trails, rides, and scenic shuttle buses without rushing.
Choose the east-gate mountain loop
Follow this order for the smoothest day: east gate → Bailong Elevator → Yuanjiajie → Yangjiajie bus transfer → Tianzi Mountain → Tianzi Cableway → east gate. Taking the lift up and the cable car down avoids long uphill climbs. The paved mountain paths still include short stair sections and gentle slopes. Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours at Yuanjiajie and 1 to 1.5 hours at Tianzi Mountain for viewpoint walks and photos.
This one-day plan focuses on the famous Avatar sandstone pillars and wide panoramic valley views. Save Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai for a second day so you can enjoy these two high-cliff areas at an easy pace.
Buy the three tickets this route uses
| Ticket type | Price per person | Journey |
|---|---|---|
| Park admission and internal shuttle buses | 236元 (≈ USD 35 ≈ USD 35) | 4-day park entry and bus network |
| Bailong Elevator | 65元 (≈ USD 9.7 ≈ USD 9.7) | One-way uphill ride |
| Tianzi Cableway | 72元 (≈ USD 11 ≈ USD 11) | One-way downhill ride |
The standard adult total is 373元 (≈ USD 56 ≈ USD 56) per person, excluding optional 3元 (≈ USD 0.45 ≈ USD 0.45) insurance. Your main park ticket remains valid for four consecutive calendar days. You can use this loop on your first day.
Reserve your morning entry slot for the east gate, known as 吴家峪门票站 (Wujiayu Ticket Station). When booking tickets, enter your US passport details exactly as they appear on your information page, and scan your physical passport at the entrance turnstiles. When buying mountain ride tickets, select the uphill direction for Bailong Elevator and the downhill direction for Tianzi Cableway.
To arrange admission in advance, you can book Zhangjiajie Forest Park admission online.
For pass options and booking steps, see the forest park ticket guide.
Morning: east gate to Bailong Elevator
The east gate is also called the Landmark Gate (武陵源标志门). Both names refer to the same entrance. Head to the Wulingyuan east gate on foot or by taxi from your hotel.
After entering through the turnstiles, board the free park shuttle bus bound for 百龙天梯 (Bailong Elevator). The scenic valley bus ride takes about 25 to 30 minutes.
Ride the glass elevator up the sheer cliff face. At the top station, catch the short park shuttle to 迷魂台停车场 (Mihuntai car park). This stop marks the start of the Yuanjiajie walking path.
Late morning: walk through Yuanjiajie
From Mihuntai car park, follow the clearly marked path past three landmark viewpoints: 迷魂台 (Mihun Platform), 乾坤柱 (Qiankun Pillar), and 天下第一桥 (First Bridge under Heaven).
Mihun Platform gives a broad view of the sandstone pillars. Qiankun Pillar is the iconic floating mountain shape with pine trees on top. First Bridge is a natural stone arch joining two high cliffs. View the arch from the observation deck before walking across it.
Plan for 1.5 to 2 hours for this cliff-edge walk, including photo stops and short stair climbs. The path finishes at 天下第一桥停车场 (Tianqiao station), where you will catch your next shuttle bus.
Lunch before the mountain bus transfer
Take a 30 to 45 minute lunch break at Tianqiao before heading to Tianzi Mountain. Bringing a packed lunch gives you the flexibility to eat whenever you finish the trail. You can pick up bakery items, fruit, or snacks in Wulingyuan town before entering the park.
For a hot seated meal on the mountain, visit 德克士 (Dicos) right beside the Tianqiao shuttle stop. A combo meal costs about 50元 (≈ USD 7.5 ≈ USD 7.5). Outdoor sheltered tables sit right behind the counter.
For vegetarian, vegan, or halal diets, buying food in Wulingyuan town before you enter the park gives you far better options than the limited stalls along the cliff paths.
When buying food to take into the park, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to explain your dietary needs to the shop or restaurant.
Early afternoon: transfer to Tianzi Mountain
At Tianqiao station, board the park bus heading toward 杨家界 (Yangjiajie). At the Yangjiajie bus hub, transfer to the connecting shuttle for 天子山 (Tianzi Mountain) and Helong Park. The total ride takes about 40 minutes, plus transfer time between buses.
Use Yangjiajie strictly as a bus transfer point on this one-day route rather than starting a side trail. If you want to check with staff before boarding, show this question: 去天子山,在哪换车? (Where do I change buses for Tianzi Mountain?).
Get off at Helong car park and follow the walking loop to 贺龙公园 (Helong Park), 御笔峰 (Imperial Brush Peaks), and 仙女献花 (Fairy Scattering Flowers). The stone pillars at Imperial Brush Peaks stand in a row like upright calligraphy brushes. These viewpoints look out across thousands of jagged peaks. Plan for 1 to 1.5 hours of walking here.
The park transport guide explains all bus connections between the valley and mountain routes.
Late afternoon: cable car down and return to Wulingyuan

Aim to finish at the Tianzi viewpoints around 15:30 to be back at the east gate around 16:30 to 17:00.
Walk back to 贺龙公园停车场 (Helong Park car park) and take the short shuttle bus to 天子山索道上站 (Tianzi Cableway upper station). Ride the cable car downhill over the peak forest. From 天子山索道下站 (Tianzi Cableway lower station), board the valley bus back to 吴家峪门票站 (Wujiayu Ticket Station).
Outside the gate, walk back to your Wulingyuan hotel or take a metered taxi. If you are staying in Zhangjiajie city center or heading to the airport or high-speed rail station, take a taxi or bus back to the city from Wulingyuan.
Practical details for this park day
When entering the east gate in the morning, check the day's posted closing times for the Tianzi Cableway downhill ride and the final valley return buses so you know when to begin your descent from Helong Park.
Keep names clear when planning: 天子山 (Tianzi Mountain) is part of this forest park route. 天门山 (Tianmen Mountain) is an entirely separate mountain in downtown Zhangjiajie with its own tickets, cable car, and entry schedule. Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and its Glass Bridge are also at a separate site that requires separate booking.
