Stay in Wulingyuan town (武陵源) when exploring Zhangjiajie National Forest Park over consecutive days. Stay in downtown Zhangjiajie, Yongding District (张家界市区、永定区) for Tianmen Mountain and fast rides to Dayong Airport or the train stations. For a classic three-day trip with two park days and one Tianmen day, book two nights in Wulingyuan and one night downtown. Make a single hotel move after finishing your park trails.

If you prefer staying in one hotel for the entire trip, base yourself where you spend the most sightseeing days. Two or more forest park days favor Wulingyuan. A Tianmen-focused visit favors the city. You can then visit the other area as a day trip.

Wulingyuan town: choose the gate before the hotel

For visits to Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, look for hotels around the East Gate, also known as Wujiayu Ticket Station (吴家峪门票站) or Landmark Gate (武陵源标志门). Staying here lets you walk straight to park shuttle buses and return quickly after a full day on the trails. Nearby streets like Weiyang Road (未央路) and Guihua Road (桂花路) offer plenty of dining options.

Wulingyuan Bus Station (武陵源汽车客运站) is separate from the gate. Locate both your hotel reception and your planned gate on the map before booking.

Hotels near the South Gate (森林公园门票站) suit routes starting at Golden Whip Stream and Huangshizhai. Check the forest park entrance guide to match your trail plan with the right gate before booking. A hotel listed simply as near the park might sit at an entrance far from your morning start.

Wulingyuan is also the most practical base for a side trip to the Grand Canyon and Glass Bridge.

City: stay near your Tianmen start or departure

For visiting Tianmen Mountain, look for hotels in Guanliping (官黎坪), along Dayong Road (大庸路), or near the city lower cableway station (天门山索道下站). This station serves as the main urban departure point for the mountain. Review the operating routes for your travel dates before booking.

Downtown is also home to regular Zhangjiajie Station (张家界站) and the Central Bus Station, while high-speed trains arrive at Zhangjiajie West Station (张家界西站). Staying downtown also makes evening outings to 72 Qilou (七十二奇楼) easy.

One hotel or one move

Staying in one hotel: Unpack once and keep the same room. A round-trip drive between downtown and Wulingyuan's East Gate takes about 80 to 100 minutes each day. A one-way taxi costs about CNY 100 (≈ USD 15 ) per car. The city-to-Wulingyuan bus costs CNY 13 (≈ USD 1.9 ) per person each way and takes about 50 to 60 minutes.

Making one move: Trade one checkout for shorter morning starts on both sides. Check out on your final park morning, leave bags with the front desk, finish your trail loop, and take a car downtown in the evening. The next morning, head straight to Tianmen Mountain.

Fit arrival and departure around your base

When arriving during the day at Zhangjiajie West Station, take a taxi directly to Wulingyuan (about 30 to 40 minutes) to start your park days immediately. If you arrive at the downtown railway station, the adjacent Central Bus Station runs regular coaches to Wulingyuan.

For an early morning flight, staying near the Tianmen city station gives you an airport ride of about 15 to 20 minutes. For a high-speed train from Zhangjiajie West Station, allow about 20 minutes by car from downtown.

Practical tips before choosing a hotel

  • Check the Chinese name and exact map pin: Verify the walking distance from the lobby to your planned park gate or cableway station.
  • Match your bag drop to your exit: When moving hotels, leave bags with your Wulingyuan front desk in the morning, finish your trail loop back at the same gate, collect your bags, and take a taxi downtown.
  • Pick the area before the room: Select the right park entrance in Wulingyuan or the cableway hub downtown before comparing specific room types.
