Reach Heaven's Gate and its 999-step stairway on Tianmen Mountain right beside downtown Zhangjiajie. Route C is the open route: ride the express cableway from the mountain gate, then take the upper escalators up to the high cliff walks. The long city cableway is closed for rebuilding. Plan for 4 to 6 hours inside the scenic area.
Understand the three levels
Tianmen Cave Square (天门洞广场) sits below the natural opening. This is where you get classic photos looking up at the giant outdoor staircase rising between vertical cliffs.
Tianmen Cave (天门洞), also called Heaven's Gate, is a huge natural stone arch cut through the mountain rock. The 999-step staircase connects the lower square directly to the cave opening. A separate five-section lower escalator built inside the mountain gives you an alternative way up. It is an open-air natural arch rather than a dark underground cave.
The Summit rises above the cave. A seven-section escalator system through the mountain connects the back of the cave to the high plateau trails. Up top, you will find walking paths along vertical rock faces, short glass walkways, and Tianmen Mountain Temple (天门山寺). Most of your day will be spent walking here.
Tianmen Mountain (天门山) sits right next to Zhangjiajie city center. The sandstone pillar forest from Avatar is located separately inside Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in Wulingyuan. The long glass bridge across a deep valley belongs to Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Plan each place on a different day.
How long to spend at Tianmen Mountain
Plan for 4 to 6 hours inside the scenic area. This gives you time for the cable car rides, escalators, photos at the cave, and one summit walking loop. Make this your primary activity for the day so you have time for relaxed meals and city transit.
Aim to spend 2 to 3 hours on the summit paths, reserving the rest of your time for the cave, transport connections, and ticket lines. Start with one walking loop. Add the temple or extra viewpoints only if your legs and schedule allow.
An arrival afternoon or departure morning needs a separate schedule built around your train or flight. Treat completing the mountain visit, retrieving stored bags, and reaching the terminal as three distinct steps.
Choose the route open on your date
Only Route C is currently open. The long city cableway is closed along its entire route for rebuilding. Routes A, B, and one-way tickets are suspended. The Cave Express Cableway runs the full round trip from the mountain gate.
Your ticket letter sets your transit up and down the mountain. Once you reach the top, you can walk either summit trail freely.
Route C: city shuttle, express cableway and the summit

Choose Route C (also marked as Line C). This route uses the express cableway both ways, bypassing the winding 99-bend mountain road completely. For walking trails at the top that save your knees, see our guide to Tianmen Mountain with less walking.
Start at the downtown lower station, 天门山索道下站. Ticket windows and visitor services operate here as the shuttle departure point. Take the free park shuttle to the mountain gate, then follow this order:
- Ride the Tianmen Cave Express cableway (天门洞快线索道) up to the cave square.
- Reach Heaven's Gate (天门洞) by climbing the 999 steps or riding the lower escalator.
- Ride the seven upper escalators inside the mountain up to the summit.
- Walk your chosen summit loop.
- Ride the upper escalators back down to Heaven's Gate, then return to the square.
- Ride the express cableway down to the mountain gate and take the free shuttle back downtown.
From the Express cableway upper station, walk the short connecting path directly into Tianmen Cave Square.
The city cableway closure and the express cableway
The long Tianmen Mountain Cableway (天门山索道) starts downtown and is closed for rebuilding. The Cave Express Cableway (天门洞快线索道) starts at the mountain gate and carries Route C visitors both up and down. This route completely bypasses the 99-bend mountain road, Tongtian Avenue (通天大道).
Ticket counters sell passes from 07:30 to 16:00. Rides start at 08:00, and mountain entry closes at 16:00. Pick a morning entry window so you have plenty of daylight for the cave and summit trails.
What the ticket covers, and which escalator costs extra
The standard adult combined ticket costs 285元 (≈ USD 43 ≈ USD 43) per person. It covers mountain admission and the transport chain for your booked route. The 72元 (≈ USD 11 ≈ USD 11) admission price is only the entry portion; buy the combined ticket for the full route.
The seven upper escalators (7级穿山自动扶梯), which connect Heaven's Gate to the summit in both directions, are included in your ticket. The lower escalator (登天门扶梯) runs inside the cliff between the lower square and Heaven's Gate as an alternative to the steep 999-step outdoor stairs. Riding the lower escalator up costs 32元 (≈ USD 4.8 ≈ USD 4.8) per person, while riding it down is free. Climb the open stairs for classic photos, or pay for the lower escalator to save your legs.
Optional 3元 (≈ USD 0.45 ≈ USD 0.45) insurance brings the combined ticket to 288元 (≈ USD 43 ≈ USD 43). The lower escalator has five sections, while the upper system has seven.
Book a date, entry slot and ticket
Booking a morning slot gives you ample daylight to see Heaven's Gate, walk the summit loops, and return without rushing. Tianmen Mountain requires its own separate ticket from Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. If you plan to visit both areas, you will need a separate forest park ticket.
You can book Tianmen Mountain tickets online before arriving at the station. Tickets are also sold on WeChat (天门山 or 张家界天门山景区) and at the city lower station ticket windows.
- Select your visit date and the route operating that day.
- Pick an open entry time slot.
- Enter each traveler's full name and document details.
- Choose passport as the document type and enter your US passport number.
- Complete payment and save your digital confirmation.
- Bring the original US passport registered in the order for turnstile verification.
Enter names and passport numbers exactly as shown on the passport photo page (for example, SURNAME: SMITH, GIVEN NAMES: EMILY JANE).
Fill in the passport fields
On Chinese booking forms, 证件类型 means document type. Select 护照, Passport, or Foreign passport. 证件号码 is the passport number field; copy the exact letters and numbers from your US passport photo page. 姓名 asks for your full passport name. Follow the order requested by the form, using SMITH EMILY JANE or EMILY JANE SMITH. 身份证 refers to a Chinese resident identity card; if a form shows only that option, switch to a booking platform that supports international passports.
The account holder paying for the order can differ from the visitor. Register each traveler with their own passport details, including children.
Changing an unused ticket
To change your visit date or traveler details, open the order inside the booking app or platform you used. Keep your updated confirmation showing your registered passport number.
Correct a name or passport detail
Open your order with the original seller. Give customer support your order number, the wrong field, and your correct passport details. This applies to a misspelled name or incorrect passport number. The seller will clarify whether it can edit the unused booking or requires you to cancel and rebook.
If you renew your US passport after booking, ask the booking platform to update the record to your new passport number. Provide your existing order number and new passport details. If that booking cannot be modified, cancel and rebook through the platform.
At a staffed ticket window, show 我用护照预订了门票。 ("I booked a ticket with my passport.") For a wrong number, show 订单上的护照号码填错了。 ("The passport number in my order is wrong.")
Choose your summit walk
For a first visit, choose the West Line. It offers sheer cliff drops, the West Line Glass Walkway, and the paved Guigu cliff path (鬼谷栈道). The glass floor section is short, and the path hanging off the vertical rock face provides sweeping views across the valley. Continue toward Cherry Bay (樱桃湾) and Tianmen Mountain Temple if you want a longer loop.
Beside Tianmen Mountain Temple (天门山寺), 素斋楼 offers an easy meal break. The restaurant is located in 天界佛国 at the southern end of the summit, serving temple-style noodles and hot vegetable dishes. Walk the West Line through Cherry Bay (樱桃湾), visit the temple halls, and stop for lunch. See our guide to vegetarian and vegan dining for more options in the area.
For vegetarian or vegan meals, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to show staff before ordering.
The East Line passes through mountain forest and offers lookout points facing Heaven's Gate and the winding roads below. It works well if you have extra time on the summit. East and West describe walking loops on top, which are completely separate from your A, B, or C transport ticket.
The open summit chairlift connects Cherry Bay with the Yunmeng peak area (云梦仙顶). It costs 25元 (≈ USD 3.7 ≈ USD 3.7) per person one way. It offers a scenic shortcut across the plateau, but does not take you down to the cave.
Is the glass walkway worth it?
The West Line Glass Walkway provides a brief view straight down through clear glass panels beside the cliff wall. Fabric shoe covers cost 5元 (≈ USD 0.75 ≈ USD 0.75) per person at the entrance. Panlong Cliff (盘龙崖) offers a second glass path on the summit.
If you prefer solid footing, standard concrete walkways follow the same rock faces and valley views. You do not miss out on mountain scenery if you skip the glass sections.
Mist can appear quickly on the peak. Nearby rock walls often stay clear while the distant plains disappear into clouds. Base your walking route on how much time you want to spend on foot, allowing separate photo stops at the cave square and summit viewpoints.
Match your date to the departure point

The city lower cableway station (天门山索道下站) is located downtown in Guanliping on Dayong Road (大庸路). The mountain gate (天门山国家森林公园-山门) is south of the city beside the Cave Express cableway.
| How you arrive | Where to start | Return |
|---|---|---|
| From a downtown hotel | Free shuttle from the city lower station to the mountain gate | Express cableway down to the mountain gate, then free shuttle back downtown |
| Direct taxi or ride-hailing car | Mountain gate beside the Cave Express Cableway | Mountain gate; take a direct car or the free city shuttle |
For Route C, downtown hotel guests can use the city shuttle. Taking a taxi directly to the mountain gate works best for travelers staying further away.
Walk from hotels around the city station

Staying near the downtown station allows an easy morning walk to your departure point and back to your room after sightseeing. Set the city lower station as your navigation destination.
From Zhangjiajie Railway Station (张家界站) and the adjacent bus terminal, the lower cableway station is about 1.2 km away. Walk north along Guanli Road (官黎路) toward Dayong Road in roughly 20 minutes. Hotels along Guanli Road offer shorter walks.
If your hotel is north of the river, take a taxi or local bus to the lower station. For Route C, entering 天门山国家森林公园-山门 in your taxi app takes you directly to the mountain gate.
Take a bus or car to your starting point
Bus 17 connects both Zhangjiajie Railway Station and Zhangjiajie West High-Speed Station to the cableway area. From 火车站 (Railway Station), board the bus toward 高铁枢纽站. From Zhangjiajie West, board toward 火车站. Get off at 武陵山珍馆站, then walk 230 metres east to the city lower station. The bus announcement may say 天门山索道, but the printed stop name on road signs is 武陵山珍馆. The fare is 2元 (≈ USD 0.30 ≈ USD 0.30) per person.
Bus 1 also stops at 武陵山珍馆. In the 掌上公交 app, select 张家界 and the line passing your nearest stop to track live bus arrivals.
Taxis are convenient if you have luggage or are traveling with family. Regular city taxi meters start at 6元 (≈ USD 0.90 ≈ USD 0.90) during the day or 7元 (≈ USD 1.0 ≈ USD 1.0) at night for the first 1.6 km. Longer trips add metered distance. Ride-hailing apps show an upfront fare before you book.
From Zhangjiajie Railway Station, a taxi ride takes about 5 to 10 minutes in normal traffic. From Zhangjiajie West Station, allow roughly 20 minutes for the 9 km drive. A car ride directly to the mountain gate takes slightly longer.
Find ticket handling and the correct queue
Keep the confirmation and follow its entry method
After payment, open your Tianmen booking and verify its confirmed status, visitor details, and order number. Save the voucher showing the date, route, entry slot, and boarding instructions. If the booking remains pending, contact platform support right away.
The platform booking number and 景区订单号 (the scenic area order number) can differ. Save the scenic area order number if your collection instructions mention it.
For direct entry, scan or show the original US passport registered in your confirmed order at the turnstile. If your voucher instructs you to pick up physical tickets, take your passport and order confirmation to the staffed ticket window before joining the boarding line.
- Route C entry: Follow shuttle signs (摆渡车) for the free bus to the mountain gate (山门). At the mountain gate, follow signs for Route C (C线) to board the Cave Express cableway. The shuttle line and the cableway ticket gates are separate lines.
Arrive on time for your booked entry slot. Booking an early morning slot leaves more daylight for Heaven's Gate and the summit paths.
Return to your hotel from the actual exit
- Route C exit: The Cave Express cableway brings you down to the mountain gate. Follow signs marked for the city lower station (市区 / 天门山索道下站) to board the free shuttle back downtown. If your hotel is located elsewhere, hail a taxi or call a ride directly from the gate pickup area.
Call your ride only after reaching the gate pickup area. The mountain gate and the city lower station are distinct locations several kilometers apart. If you are catching an afternoon train or flight, see our Tianmen departure-day guide for luggage storage options and transfer times.
Practical tips
- Time zone: All entry slots, cableways, and buses operate on China Standard Time (UTC+8).
- Bus fare: Pay the 2元 (≈ USD 0.30 ≈ USD 0.30) bus fare using exact cash coins or notes, or an active transit mini-app code in Alipay or WeChat Pay.
- Useful shuttle phrases: Show 去山门的摆渡车在哪里上? ("Where do I board the shuttle to the Mountain Gate?") to staff if you need the outbound shuttle. On your way down, show 这辆车回天门山索道下站吗? ("Does this bus go back to Tianmen Lower Cableway Station?") to verify the downtown return bus.
- Parking: The parking lot at the downtown cableway station is closed due to construction. Drivers taking Route C can use the free parking lot at the mountain gate.
- Walking stamina: Escalators handle the big elevation gains, but walking the cliff trails and transfer walkways still requires several miles on foot. To save energy, focus on the cave and the West Line, and ride the lower escalator to skip the 999 steps.
