Make room for two full days

Arrive in Zhangjiajie the evening before day one. Head straight to Wulingyuan and stay near the forest park's east gate. After your first mountain day, pick up your bags and move to Zhangjiajie city. Sleep near the downtown cableway station, 天门山索道下站. On day two, visit Tianmen Mountain in the morning, then head to the train station or airport in the late afternoon.

Day Main visit Where to sleep
Arrival evening Head to Wulingyuan and drop bags at hotel Wulingyuan, near the east gate
Day one Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain, then move to city Zhangjiajie city
Day two Tianmen Cave and one summit walk Evening departure or extra city night

If you arrive around midday on day one, you only have time for one mountain area. Pick either the forest park or Tianmen Mountain for that single day, or add another night to fit both. If your day-two flight or train leaves before mid-afternoon, schedule Tianmen Mountain on an earlier day.

Arrival: get to your first base

Zhangjiajie West (张家界西站) is the high-speed rail station. A taxi or ride-hailing car to Wulingyuan takes about 30 to 40 minutes. Direct public buses also run from the station to Wulingyuan. If you arrive late, take a direct car so your bags are already at your morning starting point.

From Zhangjiajie station (张家界站), the city Central Bus Station (张家界中心汽车站) sits right next door with direct coaches to Wulingyuan. From Hehua Airport (张家界荷花国际机场), book a car straight to Wulingyuan, or take a short city ride to the Central Bus Station to catch a bus.

For a direct arrival transfer from the airport or West Station to Wulingyuan, budget CNY 120 to 320 (≈ USD 18–48 ) per sedan, one way. The transfer guide helps you choose a car for your group and luggage.

Wulingyuan Bus Station and the park gate are separate stops. Show your driver your hotel's Chinese name and address for drop-off. The next morning, enter through 吴家峪门票站 (also called 武陵源标志门), the east gate for this route.

Book the tickets that match the two days

Book your forest park admission and shuttle ticket, Bailong Elevator uphill, and Tianzi Cableway downhill. Select the east gate and a morning entry window. The park pass remains valid for four consecutive days, even though this route uses just one day.

Adult ticket Cost per person
Forest park admission with shuttle buses CNY 236 (≈ USD 35 )
Bailong Elevator, uphill once CNY 65 (≈ USD 9.7 )
Tianzi Cableway, downhill once CNY 72 (≈ USD 11 )
Day-one total CNY 373 (≈ USD 56 )
Tianmen Mountain scenic package CNY 285 (≈ USD 43 )
Both mountain days CNY 658 (≈ USD 98 )

These prices cover standard mountain transport and entry. Hotel rooms, road travel and food are separate. You can map out your total stay with the trip budget tool. Optional travel insurance, Tianmen's lower uphill escalators and cliffside glass-walk shoe covers cost extra.

Book with your US passport details (such as Alex Smith, passport number, and date of birth), and bring your physical passport to the entrance turnstiles. The forest park's official WeChat mini-program is 张家界旅游小助手. The forest park ticket guide explains admission and ride options. Book Tianmen for the date and operating route shown in the day-two section below.

Allow 8 to 9 hours for the full forest park loop, including lift lines, shuttle rides and lunch. Check out of your room before entering, and leave your bags at the hotel desk to pick up after your visit.

  1. Morning: Enter through the east gate. Ride the park shuttle to Bailong lower station (百龙天梯下站) and take the glass elevator up. Catch the upper shuttle to Mihuntai car park (迷魂台停车场).
  2. Late morning: Walk through Yuanjiajie for 1.5 to 2 hours. Follow the path past Mihun Platform, the Avatar pillar (乾坤柱), and First Bridge under Heaven (天下第一桥). Finish at the First Bridge shuttle stop.
  3. Lunch: Stop for 30 to 45 minutes before taking the next bus. Pick up a packed lunch in Wulingyuan town before entering the park so you do not lose time looking for food on the cliffs.
  4. Early afternoon: Take the shuttle toward Yangjiajie. Change buses at Yangjiajie car park (杨家界停车场) for Tianzi Mountain. Continue to Helong Park (贺龙公园), Imperial Brush Peaks (御笔峰) and the nearby viewpoints for 1 to 1.5 hours.
  5. Late afternoon: Leave the viewpoints around 15:30. Take the short bus from Helong Park car park to Tianzi Cableway upper station (天子山索道上站). Ride the cable car down, then take the valley shuttle back to the east gate. Plan to exit around 16:30 to 17:00.

Ask park staff at morning entry for that day's final Tianzi cable car and shuttle departures, and plan your descent to match. The one-day forest park guide details every trail and shuttle connection.

After the park: collect bags and move to the city

Return to your Wulingyuan hotel and collect your bags. Arrange the evening ride to your city hotel; a direct car keeps luggage simple after the long park day. Allow an hour in the evening plan for the road journey.

Stay near the downtown Tianmen cableway station. This keeps the free shuttle stop and your luggage pickup close to your hotel. Since Route C starts at Mountain Gate, plan for the ride from downtown to the gate in the morning.

Check in, get dinner, and pick up water and snacks from a nearby shop so your second day stays on schedule.

Day two: Tianmen Cave and the summit paths

Plan for six hours from entry to exit. An 08:00 to 14:00 visit works well for this schedule. Focus on one summit trail loop and take a quick lunch break on top.

Your travel dates determine your route:

Only Route C operates from 13 October 2026. Take the free shuttle from 天门山索道下站, the downtown lower station, to 天门山国家森林公园-山门, the mountain gate. Ride the Cave Express Cableway to the cave plaza, head up to Heaven's Gate by the 999 steps or lower escalators, then take the seven upper escalators to the summit. Return along the same route to the mountain gate, then take the shuttle bus or a taxi back downtown. The main downtown cableway is closed for rebuilding.

At the cave plaza, you can look up at the massive natural opening above the 999-step staircase. The separate five-section lower escalators bypass the stairs: going up costs CNY 32 (≈ USD 4.8 ) per person, while going down is free during current works. The upper seven-section escalators link the cave to the top and are included with standard admission.

On the summit, follow the West Line for the Guigu cliffside walkway (鬼谷栈道) and open gorge views. The optional glass skywalk charges CNY 5 (≈ USD 0.75 ) per person for shoe covers, but standard paved paths also provide clear views. Start heading back toward the upper escalators by 12:30 to exit the park by 14:00.

The Tianmen ticket and route guide shows the date-based entry points. The mountain guide explains the summit walks. Stay another city night if you want to add the temple and a second summit path, then leave the next morning.

Finish with luggage and an evening departure

Leave your bags at your downtown hotel front desk before heading up the mountain. After exiting the scenic area, pick up your bags and take a cab or ride-hailing car to your departure hub. With Route C, your travel order is Mountain Gate, downtown hotel, then the train station or airport.

Use these planning blocks: 30 minutes from Mountain Gate to the city bag stop, 15 minutes to collect bags, then 45 minutes to Zhangjiajie West or 30 minutes to the airport. Aim to reach the hub one hour before a train, two hours before a domestic flight, or three hours before an international flight. All itinerary times use local Zhangjiajie time, UTC+8.

With the sample 14:00 Route C exit, a 17:00 train from Zhangjiajie West, 19:00 domestic flight, or 20:00 international flight fits these planning blocks. Use your airline's check-in and bag-drop deadline when setting your airport arrival. The departure-day guide has the full backward calculation.

Practical tips and a slower choice

The forest loop uses lifts for the major climbs, with about 2.5 to 3.5 hours of viewpoint walking along stairs and slopes. For a shorter walk, focus on Mihun Platform, Qiankun Pillar and Imperial Brush Peaks. Keep the lunch break before the upper-mountain bus transfer.

Buy packed meals in town, where you have more choice for vegetarian, vegan or halal food. These are different meal needs; use the matching dining request card when ordering. Pack lunch for both park days and eat within each visit's time block.

When buying food to take into the park, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to explain your dietary needs to the shop or restaurant.

For slower photography and a stream walk, spend both days inside the forest park and keep both nights in Wulingyuan. That route adds Golden Whip Stream instead of changing base for Tianmen. The Grand Canyon Glass Bridge, Furong Town and Fenghuang belong on a longer trip with their own travel time.
