Start in the app or website where you bought your ticket. Changing an issued ticket before departure often costs less than cancelling, and you can even switch a missed train if you act before midnight on travel day. Here is how to manage changes, refund fees, and reroutes for your Zhangjiajie journey.

Choose the action from your ticket status

If your train ticket is issued and you still want to travel, use Change (改签). The 12306 English website labels this as Endorsement. Pick an available train to complete the switch. Each ticket allows one change. If plans change again after that, refund the unused ticket before departure and buy a new one.

If you want to cancel your journey, use Refund (退票) before your scheduled departure time. Cancellation fees increase as departure approaches. If your booking is still waiting to be issued, cancel the reservation directly in your booking app instead.

These rules cover standard mainland rail trips, such as journeys between Zhangjiajie, Changsha, or Fenghuang. Cross-border tickets involving Hong Kong West Kowloon or Laos follow separate rules shown in those specific bookings.

Start in the channel that sold your ticket

A ticket bought directly through 12306

  1. Sign in to your 12306 account, open your orders, and select the unused ticket.
  2. Choose the traveler who needs to make a change. Tap 改签 for a new date, train, or seat class, or tap 退票 to cancel.
  3. For a change, select an available train. The screen displays the new fare along with any fee.
  4. Complete the payment or confirm the refund. Check your updated booking status to see your new date, station, carriage, and seat.

Direct refunds on 12306 run 24 hours a day, but you must submit your request before scheduled departure. The railway sends refunds back to your original payment method. For bookings with multiple travelers, you can change or refund individual passenger tickets separately.

A ticket bought through Trip.com, Ctrip, or another agent

Open the app where you booked the ticket. Choose change or refund for an issued ticket, or tap cancel booking for an unissued reservation. If someone else booked for you, ask them to handle the order from their account.

Trip.com has earlier processing cutoffs than the railway. Its policy requires refund requests at least 60 minutes before departure for manual bookings, or 10 minutes for bookings through a linked 12306 account. Use the cutoff shown in your order for that service. Near departure, take the booking and original US passport to the station ticket counter if the platform has stopped accepting the request.

Manual changes or cancellations on Trip.com may incur an agent fee of 15 yuan (≈ USD 2.2 ) per passenger per ticket, and original booking fees are non-refundable. Direct 12306 bookings avoid these third-party fees.

A ticket bought with cash at a station

For a change, go to a railway ticket counter with your passport and order number. Cash-paid tickets are changed at the counter. If you submit a cash-ticket refund online through 12306, collect the cash at a station counter within 180 days of the refund, showing your passport.

Calculate the refund fee

Refund fees depend on how many hours remain before scheduled departure at your boarding station (China Time, UTC+8). The fee applies to unused tickets cancelled before departure.

Time remaining Railway refund fee
At least 8 days Free
At least 48 hours, less than 8 days 5% of the fare
At least 24 hours, less than 48 hours 10% of the fare
Less than 24 hours 20% of the fare

The exact boundary belongs to the earlier, cheaper band: 48 hours means 5%, and 24 hours means 10%. Charged refund fees have a minimum of 2 yuan (≈ USD 0.30 ), or the ticket fare when that is lower. The railway rounds fees to the nearest 0.50 yuan (≈ USD 0.07 ).

Moving a ticket to a later date does not always remove its refund fee. If you change a ticket with less than eight days remaining to a departure over eight days away, then refund it over eight days before that new departure, the railway still charges 5%. A changed ticket whose new date falls in the Spring Festival travel period has a 20% refund fee.

Bought the wrong ticket just now?

12306 offers a free mistaken-purchase refund for eligible new tickets. Submit it within 30 minutes of successful payment, with at least four hours before departure. The booking account can use it for one order per calendar day.

This covers eligible new direct purchases through the 12306 website, app, or Alipay mini program, for travel from 2 February 2026. Changed tickets, reservation and waitlist orders, group tickets, and travel-pass products are outside this offer. For a ticket bought through an agent, use that order's cancellation process.

Compare a change with a refund

Pick your new train from available seats. The railway change fee depends on your timing and whether you switch to a later date.

When you request the change New travel date Railway change fee
At least 48 hours before departure Any date on sale Free
Less than 48 hours before departure Same day or an earlier date Free
At least 24 hours, less than 48 hours before departure A later date 5%
Less than 24 hours before departure A later date 15%
After departure, before midnight that day Another train the same day Free
After departure, before midnight that day A later date on sale 40%

Paid change fees use the lower of the old and new ticket fares. The fare difference is a separate item. A more expensive new ticket may require full payment up front, followed by a refund of the old fare. For a cheaper ticket, the railway refunds the difference and deducts the applicable refund fee from that difference. After-departure changes apply a 20% refund fee on the returned fare difference.

Same-day switches are handy if mountain sightseeing takes longer than expected. Moving to the next day within 48 hours costs extra. Check the payment summary for the final breakdown.

Pick a later train you can reach after the park. Allow for lift or cable-car queues, the descent and bag collection. Add travel to the correct station and entry checks. Use this arrival estimate before spending your one change. Missing the replacement train leaves no second ordinary change. If you changed before the original departure, an unused replacement remains refundable before its new departure.

Missed the train: change it before midnight

If you miss your train, you can change your unused ticket before 24:00 on the original travel day. You can switch to another train that day for free if seats are available, or pick a later day for a 40% fee. Because agent apps close processing earlier, head directly to a station counter if your app will not process the change.

A ticket changed after departure cannot be refunded. Once that day ends, the missed ticket cannot be changed. If you have already changed this ticket once, its one-change allowance is used.

At the counter, show your booking and your passport. This sentence requests a later train that day: 我没赶上这趟车,想改签今天晚一点的车。 (I missed this train and want to change to a later train today.)

Change the destination and rebuild your Zhangjiajie route

To switch from Fenghuang to Changsha, use Change destination (变更到站) at least 48 hours before the original departure. Choose a train with seats available. This uses the ticket's one change; a ticket already changed cannot use this option. Within 48 hours, a different destination needs a new booking and, before departure, a refund of the unused original ticket.

Read the exact station name in the new booking. Zhangjiajie West is 张家界西; the city railway station is 张家界. They are separate stations. A later train may also move your arrival from one city station to another, so match your hotel transfer to the correct station.

After the change is confirmed, adjust the next leg, luggage pickup, and hotel arrival. If arriving late in Wulingyuan, arrange the station-to-hotel journey for that new arrival time. A changed train does not change a separate bus, hotel, or park booking.

If your new ticket arrives at Zhangjiajie West, plan your transfer for your new arrival time. Choose the route to city hotels or Wulingyuan for your lodging.

If the railway cancels or delays your train

For a cancelled train, request the refund from the cancellation announcement until 30 days after the ticket's travel date. The railway charges no refund fee. Select the disruption refund in your booking, or take the booking to railway staff.

For a delayed train you no longer want to take, request a refund before its actual departure. Eligible connecting tickets can be refunded together without a fee. For a cancelled service, a connection bought before the cancellation announcement can also be refunded together, before that connecting train departs. Tell 12306 or station staff that the connection is affected by the cancelled or delayed train.

Useful final details

  • Keep the original and new order numbers and the change or refund result. If the refund status is complete but the credit is missing, ask the booking channel for its refund record, then ask your card issuer or payment provider about that credit.
  • Name or passport errors need the booking channel's correction process or a new ticket. An ordinary train change cannot replace the passenger's name or document number.
  • For mainland electronic tickets, claim a fee invoice through 12306 within 180 days after paying the change or refund fee. The electronic invoice is separate from the ticket used for boarding.

For booking and station entry, follow train tickets and boarding.

Common questions

Can I handle a ticket bought elsewhere in 12306?

Yes. Registered users who complete passport verification in the 12306 app can change or refund their own displayed tickets bought at a counter, machine, agency, or through another person on 12306. Cash-paid tickets still need the counter for changes. For an agent booking, keep its order record to track any separate service fee.
