Forest park: lunch before your next shuttle bus

Plan lunch around your forest park one-day route. Eating on the upper mountain saves hiking time and keeps you close to afternoon scenic spots. Both Tianzi Mountain and Yuanjiajie offer fast meals right beside key shuttle hubs.

Tianzi first: eat beside Helong Park

If you take the Tianzi Mountain cable car up in the morning, tour the viewpoints around Helong Park (贺龙公园) and eat before boarding the shuttle bus to Yuanjiajie. This flow works smoothly on a two-day forest park itinerary.

McDonald's Tianzi Mountain restaurant (麦当劳天子山餐厅) sits right at Helong Park (天子山顶贺龙公园). The average spend is about 36元 (≈ USD 5.4 ) per person. Indoor seating gives you a welcome break between trail walks and your next bus ride.

Aim to eat between 11:30 and 12:30 if your morning trail brings you to Tianzi then. A 45-minute stop lets you eat, rest your legs, and catch the shuttle along the upper plateau.

Yuanjiajie first: stop at the Tianqiao transfer area

If you ride the Bailong Elevator up first, walk the Avatar pillar viewpoints toward the First Bridge Under Heaven (天下第一桥). This walking path ends near the Tianqiao shuttle stop (天桥车站).

Here you will find Dicos (德克士). A combo meal costs around 50元 (≈ USD 7.5 ). Sheltered tables behind the restaurant give you a place to sit before boarding the bus toward Tianzi Mountain.

Allow 30 to 45 minutes for this stop. If you finish Yuanjiajie earlier than planned, take the shuttle straight to Tianzi and eat at Helong Park instead.

Golden Whip Stream: carry lunch into the valley

For a walk along Golden Whip Stream (金鞭溪), buy a packed lunch in Wulingyuan before entering the park. Enter through the south gate (森林公园门票站), pass Great Oxygen Bar Square (大氧吧广场), and follow the stream toward Water Surrounds Four Gates (水绕四门).

A packed lunch lets you stop at any scenic rest area when you get hungry. Small valley stalls sell bottled water and light snacks along the way. Follow the stream route for onward bus connections.

If you visit Huangshizhai in the morning, eat lunch on that upper plateau before heading down to the stream trail.

Tianmen Mountain: eat on the summit circuit

On Tianmen Mountain, plan your meal stop along the mountain top paths. Cherry Bay restaurant (樱桃湾餐厅) sits near Tianmen Mountain Temple (天门山寺) and serves snacks and fast food.

Walking the West Line cliff path in the morning leads straight to Cherry Bay for a natural midday stop. From there, you can continue along the East Line or ride the trans-mountain escalator down toward Tianmen Cave.

Smaller snack counters operate near Tianmen Cave Square (天门洞前广场) and Yunmeng Xianding (云梦仙顶). For an afternoon ticket, eat in Zhangjiajie city before heading to the cable car station. If you arrive in the morning and stay through midday, carry a light lunch or stop at the summit counters. Learn more about the walking paths in the Tianmen Mountain guide.

For temple-style noodles and vegetable dishes, walk just past Cherry Bay (樱桃湾) to 素斋楼 beside Tianmen Mountain Temple (天门山寺) in 天界佛国. Touring the West Line and Guigu cliff path beforehand places lunch right on your summit loop. Use our vegetarian and vegan guide for helpful dietary phrases.

Grand Canyon: eat before entry or after the lower exit

For a morning canyon visit, eat breakfast in Wulingyuan, complete the gorge walk, and head back to town for lunch. For an afternoon ticket, eat an early lunch in town around 11:00 to 12:00 before heading to the canyon entrance.

Route B starts at the upper visitor center (游客中心), crosses the glass bridge, descends through the canyon trails, and ends with a boat ride across Shenquan Lake (神泉湖) to the lower exit (峡谷出口). Arrange your driver or shuttle pickup at this lower exit.

Glass bridge security bans open mineral water, drinks, and cups on the bridge. Finish your drinks before crossing security checkpoints. Avoid using luggage storage lockers at the upper visitor center because picking up your bags after the one-way canyon walk requires an extra trip back to the top. Check the Grand Canyon guide to coordinate transport smoothly.

What to pack and how to order

For mountain days, choose food that fits inside a zippered daypack: bakery bread, boxed rice meals, fruit, and energy bars. Buy your main lunch in town before entering the park where you have wider choices and lower prices. Carry enough water for each trail section and buy cold drinks at the rest areas along the way.

If you need vegetarian, vegan, or halal meals, buy your food in town before entering the park. When ordering vegan food, verify that dishes contain no eggs, dairy, or meat stock. Check the halal dining guide for city options before you start your day.

When buying food to take into the park, you can create a free dining card in Chinese to explain your dietary needs to staff.

Keep all snacks zipped inside your backpack along Golden Whip Stream. Never hold food in open plastic bags near wild macaques, as visible snacks attract aggressive monkeys.

Useful Chinese ordering phrases:

  • Takeout order: 请打包 (please pack it to take away)
  • Checking prices: 这个多少钱? (how much is this?)
