Get yuan as soon as you land at Hehua Airport or from a Bank of China branch near your hotel. A physical US debit card works at major ATMs, and bank counters exchange US dollars with your passport.
Get cash at the airport or near your hotel
International arrival at Hehua Airport
The overseas visitor payment service desk (境外来宾支付服务中心) sits in the international arrivals hall at Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (张家界荷花国际机场). It has an ATM and a currency exchange counter. The desk exchanges US dollars, euros, British pounds, Japanese yen, Korean won and Hong Kong dollars.
Check the airport map point for terminal details. If you arrive on a domestic flight from another Chinese city, head straight to your hotel and visit a nearby bank branch instead.
Zhangjiajie city centre
Bank of China Zhangjiajie Branch (中国银行张家界分行) is at 张家界市永定区回龙路东门桥新码头1号 (phone: 0744-8262601). This is the most convenient counter stop when staying downtown.
Another downtown location is Bank of China Ziwu Road Sub-branch (中国银行张家界市子午路支行) at 湖南省张家界市永定区紫舞东路中天大厦一楼门面 (phone: 0744-8281957). Copy the full Chinese street address into your map app because the branch name uses 子午路 while the street sign reads 紫舞东路.
Wulingyuan
If you stay near the national park gates, visit Bank of China Wulingyuan Sub-branch (中国银行张家界市武陵源支行). It sits on the ground floor of Baofeng Hotel on Wuling Road at 湖南省张家界市武陵源区军地坪街道办事处吴家峪居委会武陵路宝峰大酒店一层门面 (phone: 0744-5629003).
Counter exchange hours and ATM access operate separately. Staffed exchange counters usually close earlier than the lobby ATMs.
Choose how much cash to carry
Carrying CNY 300 to CNY 500 (≈ USD 45–75 ≈ USD 45–75) in cash is plenty if you use Alipay or WeChat Pay for daily spending and have your hotel and park passes booked in advance. Keep about CNY 100 (≈ USD 15 ≈ USD 15) of that amount in small bills.
TenPayGo is Tencent’s payment app for international visitors. You can link a supported international bank card, overseas wallet or Apple Pay to scan merchant codes or show your payment code across WeChat Pay merchants. Download it from App Store or Google Play before your trip to set up mobile payments.
If you plan to pay for most meals, rides and mountain cable cars in cash, withdraw more before your park days. Check the forest park ticket guide for exact ride fares on your route. Always get cash in town before entering the national forest park, as mountain trails do not have international ATMs.
Withdraw yuan with an overseas card

Bank of China ATMs accept US-issued Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, UnionPay and JCB cards. You need a physical card and its 4-digit or 6-digit PIN.
- Look for your card network logo on the ATM screen or frame.
- Insert your card, choose English, and select cash withdrawal (取款).
- Enter your PIN and select your account type.
- Enter your amount in yuan. Bank of China ATMs allow up to CNY 3,000 (≈ USD 449 ≈ USD 449) per transaction for overseas cards.
- When asked to choose the conversion currency, select CNY so your US bank sets the exchange rate.
- Take your cash, card and receipt.
Compare ATM costs and counter exchange
When using an ATM, the screen may offer to convert the transaction into US dollars right away. This is Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). Always decline this offer and choose CNY to avoid high markups from the ATM operator.
To exchange US dollar bills at a bank counter, look for the cash buying rate (现钞买入价). Bank of China posts rates showing how many yuan you receive per 100 US dollars. A US debit card with no foreign transaction fee at an ATM often gives a better rate than exchanging physical banknotes.
Exchange banknotes and get small change
Bring your physical US passport and crisp, undamaged US dollar bills to the bank counter. You do not need a Chinese bank account for basic currency exchange.
Tell the teller 我想兑换人民币。 (I would like to exchange money for RMB). Fill out the short exchange form and save your paper receipt.
RMB and CNY mean the same currency. Both 元 and spoken 块 mean yuan. Banknotes come in values of 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 yuan (≈ USD 0.15 ≈ USD 0.15). Coins come in 1 yuan (≈ USD 0.15 ≈ USD 0.15), 5 jiao and 1 jiao (10 jiao equal 1 yuan (≈ USD 0.15 ≈ USD 0.15)).
Ask for smaller bills by saying 请给我一些零钱。 (Please give me some small change). You can also ask for a 零钱包, which is a pre-packed envelope of mixed small bills. Small change is essential for local buses, taxis and fruit stands along the trail.
Practical tips
Pick a bank branch near where you stay. Decide whether you are staying in downtown Zhangjiajie or Wulingyuan first by reading where to stay.
Keep your official bank exchange receipt if you want to convert unused yuan back to US dollars before flying home. Bank of China honors exchange receipts for 24 months.
If an ATM retains your card, keep the printed slip and call Bank of China customer service at 95566 or speak with the branch staff inside.
Common questions
Can I bring yuan into China from the United States?
Yes. You can order yuan from your US bank before your trip. Travelers can bring up to CNY 20,000 (≈ USD 2,994 ≈ USD 2,994) in cash into or out of mainland China without declaring it.
