For a direct ride to your hotel, use the official taxi queue or book DiDi with your destination written in Chinese. In Zhangjiajie, getting the destination right matters most: high-speed West Station, downtown City Station, and the national park gates all use separate pickup points. Place your pin where cars can stop legally, then pick a car that fits your bags.
Taxi rank or DiDi?
Use a taxi stand when you want to leave a station right away with a car already waiting. Follow signs for 出租车 (Taxi) and show the driver your hotel name and address in Chinese. Drivers run on the meter. In Zhangjiajie city, the daytime starting flag drop is CNY 6 (≈ USD 0.90 ≈ USD 0.90), and the night starting fare is CNY 7 (≈ USD 1.0 ≈ USD 1.0), covering the first 1.6 km.
Choose DiDi when you want to set your destination in English, see car types, and pay by card through your phone. You can book from your hotel lobby or an approved pickup area. Select Express (快车) for a private ride, or Taxi (出租车) for a licensed metered cab booked through the app.
DiDi works well from Zhangjiajie West Station, downtown hotels, and return trips from the main forest park gates.
Set up DiDi for mainland China
Download DiDi China: Ride Hailing, published by Didi Chuxing (Beijing). Get it from the iPhone App Store or Google Play Store. Select Chinese mainland as your region.
- Choose your country code (+1 for US phone numbers) and enter your number to get the SMS code.
- Switch the display to English under Me (我的) → Settings (设置) → General (通用) → Language (语言) → English.
- Add an international credit card such as Visa or Mastercard under payment settings.
- Turn on location services. A travel eSIM provides mobile data, while verification texts go to your regular US mobile number.
If you already use Alipay, open Transport → Taxi, or search for DiDi inside the app to book and pay with your linked card. In WeChat, open Me → Services → Ride Hailing.
Paste the exact destination
Copy the full Chinese name, branch name, and street address directly from your booking confirmation. If your hotel sits on a walking street, ask the front desk for their nearest curbside drop-off spot.
| Destination | Chinese name to paste |
|---|---|
| Zhangjiajie West high-speed railway station | 张家界西站 |
| Zhangjiajie city railway station (regular trains) | 张家界站 |
| Hehua International Airport | 张家界荷花国际机场 |
| Tianmen Mountain city cableway lower station | 天门山索道下站 |
| Forest park East Gate (Wulingyuan Landmark Gate) | 武陵源标志门 / 吴家峪门票站 |
| Forest park South Gate (Luoguta ticket station) | 森林公园南门(锣鼓塔票站) / 锣鼓塔门票站 |
Check the station name carefully. 张家界西站 (West Station) serves high-speed trains, while 张家界站 (City Station) serves regular trains downtown. Searching only for "Zhangjiajie National Forest Park" can send you to the wrong gate. Check your gate in the forest park entrance guide before booking.
For Tianmen Mountain, the downtown cableway station and the mountain road gate (天门山山门) are completely different pickup points. Match your destination to your ticket route using the Tianmen ticket guide.
Match the vehicle to your group
A regular five-seat car holds one driver and up to four passengers. Count children in your seat count. Four adults with large rolling suitcases can run out of trunk space. Pick a larger car type on screen or call two cars.
For five or six passengers, select a six-seat vehicle option on DiDi. Premier (专车) is an upgraded car tier, so check the actual seat count shown on the vehicle option. For child safety seats, ask your hotel to arrange a private car before your ride.
Review the price estimate before confirming your ride. A regular ride quote covers the whole car. Licensed taxis booked through the app charge by the meter.
Request the car and meet the driver
- Type in your destination first, then adjust your pickup point on the map. Keep the pin at a street curb or marked bay where cars can pull over legally.
- At train stations and the airport, select the app's named pickup zone and walk there before requesting the car.
- Tap request. Once matched, the screen shows the car model, license plate number, and driver location on the map.
- Use the in-app chat to message the driver. The app translates English to Chinese automatically. You can send: 我在网约车上车点等您。 ("I am waiting at the ride-hail pickup point.")
- Check the license plate before opening the door. Confirm the last four digits of your phone number with the driver.
Sending your pillar number or bay number helps the driver spot you quickly. If you need to cancel, tap the in-app cancel button; the screen shows if a cancellation fee applies.
Four Zhangjiajie pickup examples
Zhangjiajie West Station: Follow signs for 网约车 down to the B1 underground car park for DiDi, or follow 出租车 for the official taxi stand. Walk to your chosen bay and message your pillar number to the driver. For your return train, set 张家界西站 and select the departures entrance (进站口). Check the West Station map point.
City railway station: Set your pickup point to 张家界站. For a metered cab, head out of the exit hall to the front square taxi stand. For DiDi, choose the designated roadside boarding point. This station sits right downtown near the Tianmen cableway station. For a train leaving from here, type 张家界站 without 西. Check the city station map point.
Hehua Airport: Exit the 1F arrivals hall after picking up your bags. Metered taxis wait at the taxi stand right outside the doors. The ride-hail pickup area sits across two crosswalks. On DiDi, select the airport pickup area, then type your hotel address. For your return flight, enter 张家界荷花国际机场 and pick the departures level. Check the airport map point.
Forest park return: Exit through the gate where your day ends. At East Gate, walk from the Landmark Gate plaza to the main road boarding point on the app. At South Gate, wait at the outside forecourt boarding area. Paste your hotel's Chinese name as your destination. For steps inside the park before exiting, see the park transport guide.
From East Gate, rides into downtown or West Station match quickly. Short 1 km to 2 km hops to nearby Wulingyuan hotels can take longer to get accepted; walk or ask your hotel for a pickup. For returns from Tianzi Mountain North Gate (天子山门票站), book a transfer through your hotel in advance because fewer ride-hail cars patrol this entrance.
Finish the payment in the right place
For DiDi rides, pay directly inside the app you booked with. The DiDi app charges your linked credit card; an Alipay or WeChat mini-program charges through that account. Review the completed trip screen to confirm the total charge.
Keep all app bookings inside the platform. If a driver asks you to cancel and pay offline in cash, or tries to add an extra return fee off the meter, keep the order active and report it through in-app customer support.
For a street taxi or airport queue cab, pay the driver directly using cash or by scanning their Alipay or WeChat QR code with your phone.
If you leave an item in the car, open Orders (行程) in DiDi, select the ride, and tap the help button to contact the driver or customer support.
Practical tips
- Save your hotel address in Chinese before your mountain hike so your return ride is ready to book.
- For pickups from narrow alleys, set the pin at the main street intersection where cars can pull over.
- When getting in the car, verify the driver with the last four digits of your US phone number.
- Driver pickup times and train departures run on China Standard Time (UTC+8).
